Several of the iPhone’s most useful features are buried in Settings, Control Center, or app-specific menus. In iOS 26, you can reduce call interruptions, stop accidental ringer-volume changes, control Macro mode, share an exact line from a podcast transcript, choose a different microphone, create reminders faster, and use Apple Intelligence to understand text and objects around you.
This guide focuses on practical features rather than novelty tricks. The instructions target iOS 26, but labels can vary slightly by minor update, language, region, iPhone model, and app. If a menu is not where described, use the search field in Settings. Update your iPhone first, then check the compatibility notes before troubleshooting a missing option.
Start with the settings that fix everyday annoyances
1. Show incoming calls as a banner
A full-screen incoming call can interrupt whatever you are doing. To make calls less disruptive, open Settings → Apps → Phone → Incoming Calls, then choose Banner instead of Full Screen.

The trade-off is that a smaller notification can be easier to miss. Certain calls or phone states may still take over the screen, so this setting is not a guarantee that every call will always remain a banner.
2. Stop the volume buttons from changing your ringer volume
If the physical volume buttons regularly lower your ringtone without you noticing, go to Settings → Sounds & Haptics and turn off Change with Buttons.
With this disabled, the buttons will not normally alter alert and ringer volume. You can change that level in Sounds & Haptics instead. Remember that iPhone separates several volume types: media volume for music and video, alert or ringer volume for notifications and calls, and call volume while you are on a phone call. Turning off this option does not make every type of audio volume fixed.
3. Choose a snooze duration from one to 15 minutes
iOS 26 lets you choose a custom snooze duration instead of being tied to a single default. Open Clock → Alarms, select an alarm or tap to edit one, and look for Snooze Duration. Choose a period between 1 and 15 minutes.

The exact control can vary with the current Clock interface.
4. Screen unknown callers and wait on hold
iOS 26 adds optional tools for handling unwanted or time-consuming calls. Call Screening can ask an unknown caller for information before your phone rings normally. Hold Assist can alert you when a live agent is ready after you have been waiting on hold.
These features are not universally available. Apple lists separate language and regional availability for Call Screening, Hold Assist, and other calling features. If you cannot find them in the Phone settings, check your iOS version, language, region, carrier support, and Apple’s current availability information in its iOS 26 overview.
Get more control from the camera
5. Control when Macro mode turns on
On iPhones with macro-capable camera hardware, the Camera app may automatically switch lenses when you move close to a subject. That can be useful, but it can also produce an unexpected change in framing or quality.

To expose a manual control, open Settings → Camera and turn on Macro Control. When you move close to a subject in Camera, tap the flower icon to turn Macro mode on or off.
Enabling Macro Control does not disable macro photography. It gives you a choice. The option will not appear on iPhones without the required camera hardware. If you want the Camera app to remember your preferred macro state, check Settings → Camera → Preserve Settings for a Macro Control option; the available preservation controls can vary by model and iOS release.
6. Use Visual Intelligence on what the camera sees
On supported iPhones, Visual Intelligence can analyze objects, text, plants, animals, businesses, and other nearby content. Depending on the subject and your region, it can translate or summarize text, search for similar images, identify an object, or create a Calendar event from information on a poster or flyer.
On iPhones with Camera Control, hold Camera Control to open Visual Intelligence. Apple also documents alternate access through a configured Action button, the Lock Screen, or Control Center on supported models, including iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Availability depends on the specific model, language, region, and Apple Intelligence support. See Apple’s Visual Intelligence guide for the current access methods.

7. Analyze a screenshot with Visual Intelligence
You do not have to point the camera at something. Press the side button and volume-up button together to capture a screenshot. On a supported iPhone, use the Visual Intelligence controls that appear to search, ask a question, summarize, read text aloud, identify objects, or add information to Calendar.
Results depend on what is in the screenshot, the language and region, the search provider, and your Apple Intelligence configuration. The feature may be unavailable on older iPhones or where Apple Intelligence is not supported.
8. Remove visible distractions with Photos Clean Up
To alter an unwanted object or visible detail in a photo, open Photos, select the image, tap Edit → Clean Up, then circle or brush over the item and tap Done. It can be useful for removing background clutter or obscuring a face, license plate, or other detail before sharing.

Clean Up is an Apple Intelligence feature. It is not available on every iPhone, in every language, or in every region. If Clean Up is missing, check Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri, your model, and your language and regional availability.
Do not treat Clean Up as secure redaction. It edits the visible image; it is not a guaranteed way to destroy sensitive information. For identity documents, financial records, medical paperwork, or legal material, use a proper redaction workflow and verify the final file. Check for an original copy elsewhere, alternate versions, backups, metadata, and context that could reveal what you intended to hide. Keep the unedited original private.
Turn accessibility tools into power-user shortcuts
9. Assign an action to Back Tap
Back Tap can trigger an action when you double-tap or triple-tap the back of the iPhone. Open Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap, choose Double Tap or Triple Tap, and assign an action such as taking a screenshot, opening Control Center, turning on the flashlight, running a Shortcut, or activating an accessibility feature.
Back Tap is useful when you want a quick gesture without reaching for a button. It can also misfire. A thick case, the way you hold the phone, or placing it on a surface can affect recognition. If double-tap activates accidentally, assign the action to triple-tap, choose a less disruptive action, or turn it off.
10. Configure the Accessibility Shortcut
Triple-clicking the side button can toggle selected accessibility features. Configure it under Settings → Accessibility → Accessibility Shortcut, then select the features you want available.
Apple also supports access through the Action button, Control Center, Siri, Vocal Shortcuts, and Shortcuts, depending on the feature. Some options must be configured before they can be assigned. If you use Guided Access or Assistive Access, button and shortcut behavior can differ from the normal iPhone interface. Apple’s accessibility shortcut guide lists the available methods.
11. Use Vocal Shortcuts for a spoken trigger
Vocal Shortcuts lets you choose a word or sound that triggers an accessibility feature. This can be helpful when your hands are occupied or when a physical gesture is difficult.
Because the phone is listening for the chosen trigger, consider the privacy and false-trigger implications. A noisy room or a similar sound may activate it, and a shared environment may cause other people to discover or trigger the shortcut. Choose a distinctive phrase and avoid assigning a disruptive action unless accidental activation is acceptable.
12. Put a useful control on the Action button or Control Center
On supported models, the Action button can be assigned to a Shortcut or an accessibility function instead of its default behavior. Control Center can also provide faster access to controls such as accessibility features, microphone settings, Voice Isolation, or Reminders.
Open Settings → Action Button to review the available assignment on an iPhone with an Action button. For Control Center, swipe down from the top-right corner and use the controls-editing interface to add or rearrange available controls. The Action button is model-dependent; older iPhones may not show the setting.
Improve calls, recordings, and audio
13. Choose which microphone an app uses
iOS 26 adds a microphone input picker in Control Center. While an app is using audio input, open Control Center, tap the relevant audio or app control, and choose an available microphone, such as a connected headset instead of the iPhone’s built-in microphone. Different apps can retain different input choices where supported.
This is useful for interviews, video calls, voice notes, and recordings in noisy surroundings. The microphone must be connected, charged, and supported, and the app must support the system input choice. Bluetooth devices can introduce latency, connection drops, or inconsistent quality. If an external microphone does not appear, reconnect it, check its battery, confirm that the app has microphone permission under Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, and test another supported app.
14. Turn on Voice Isolation for clearer speech
During supported audio activity, open Control Center and choose Voice Isolation from the app’s audio controls. It is designed to emphasize speech and reduce surrounding noise across supported apps.
Voice Isolation is best for conversations, not for preserving music, room tone, or every ambient sound. If you are recording a performance or an environment where background audio matters, compare the result with the standard microphone mode.
15. Capture your own audio and video during a video call
iOS 26 documents local capture of high-quality audio and video from your own device during a video call. The exact control depends on the calling app and its support for the system feature.
Recording a call can create legal and ethical obligations. Consent and recording laws differ by jurisdiction, and the rules can apply differently depending on where each participant is located. Tell participants clearly and obtain the consent required before recording. Also check where the recording is saved and who can access it.

Use system apps more effectively
16. Share an exact moment from a podcast transcript
When an episode has a transcript, you can share a precise passage instead of asking someone to find a timestamp. In Podcasts, play the episode, open its transcript or captions, then long-press the relevant line and tap Share.
This depends on transcript availability. The recipient may need the Podcasts app, access to that episode, and a network connection. Links and transcript behavior can vary by episode, subscription, and region. iOS 26 also adds Podcasts controls such as Enhance Dialogue and show-specific custom playback speeds where supported.
17. Create a reminder from the Home Screen
iOS 26 gives you faster ways to capture a task. Use the Action button on a supported, configured iPhone or add the Reminders control to Control Center. This is useful when opening the full Reminders app would make you forget the task.
Apple Intelligence can also suggest reminders from text, webpages, emails, recipes, and meeting notes, and can organize reminders into sections. Review the suggested wording, date, list, and details before relying on it. Automated extraction can misunderstand context.
18. Organize Files with colors, emoji, and custom icons
In the Files app, long-press a folder or open its folder options to customize its appearance. iOS 26 supports custom folder icons, emoji, and colors across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
Use a consistent scheme—for example, one color for work and another for personal documents—so the visual change improves retrieval rather than becoming decoration that is difficult to remember.
19. Choose an app with Open With
If a file opens in the wrong app, long-press it in Files and choose Open With. You can also use Get Info to set a default app for that file type where the option is available.
This is a file-opening preference, not a universal switch for every system default app. The available choices depend on the file format and the apps installed on the iPhone.

The Passwords app in iOS 26 can show a timeline of account-password changes and previously generated strong passwords. Open Passwords, authenticate, select an account, and look for its history or change information.
Password history can help when you are recovering from a recent change or diagnosing a login problem. Old passwords should not be reused; treat them as sensitive credentials and keep your iPhone protected with a strong passcode and biometric authentication.
21. Use Preview for PDFs, scans, and images
iOS 26 adds a Preview app for viewing and editing PDFs and images. It supports PDF markup, scanning, autofill, and basic image tasks such as resizing and rotating.
Preview can replace a separate utility for straightforward document work. For highly sensitive scans, check the file’s sharing destination and cloud-storage permissions before sending or uploading it. Editing a document does not automatically make its contents private.

To check the main control, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence if the option is available. Apple Intelligence is restricted by iPhone model, language, and region, so its absence does not necessarily indicate a software problem.
Apple warns that generated outputs can be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Verify important translations, summaries, identifications, reminders, and calendar details yourself. Do not use an AI-generated answer as the sole basis for medical, legal, financial, safety, or identity decisions.

When a feature is missing, check the following in order:

- Search for the feature by name in Settings rather than relying only on the menu path.
- Check whether the feature needs Apple Intelligence, Camera Control, an Action button, macro hardware, dual SIM, or an app transcript.

- Restart the iPhone and update the relevant app if the control is present but does not work.

If your model supports it, add Macro Control for better camera control.
