Apple never released a phone officially called the iPhone SE 4. Its SE successor arrived as the iPhone 16e in February 2025; Apple’s current entry-level iPhone in the US is the iPhone 17e. It starts at $599 for 256GB, putting it above many midrange Android phones rather than in the old SE’s bargain-phone territory. The 17e is the stronger fit for iOS, Apple devices, performance and video. A Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy may be better value if you want a smoother display, more camera lenses, Android flexibility or a lower price.

This is a practical comparison based on listed features and prices, not a claim of hands-on testing. Prices below are US list-price signals observed on August 18, 2026, before sales tax; promotions can change the result.
What happened to the iPhone SE 4?
“iPhone SE 4” is an unofficial name that stuck while shoppers anticipated a successor to the third-generation iPhone SE. Apple instead introduced the iPhone 16e in February 2025 as part of the iPhone 16 family. The iPhone 17e now fills the entry-level role in Apple’s US lineup. Apple’s iPhone 16e announcement and current 17e store listing use those official names.
That naming correction matters because old “SE 4 versus Pixel 8a or Galaxy A35” comparisons describe the 2025 launch period, not necessarily the right purchase decision in 2026. The useful question now is whether the iPhone 17e’s features and 256GB starting storage justify its price against current Pixel and Galaxy options.

Apple lists the iPhone 17e at $599 for 256GB and $799 for 512GB. Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP file lists the Galaxy prices shown above. These are list-price signals, not promises of what a retailer charges today. Google’s live US phone range is at the Google Store; check its current listings rather than treating an older “a”-series price as current.
For a fair comparison, start with unlocked, no-trade-in prices and match storage as closely as possible. Then check carrier offers separately. A phone advertised as free may require an eligible plan and bill credits over several years; the value is not the same as an immediate discount. Trade-in estimates also depend on condition, account and promotion terms.
The iPhone’s 256GB base capacity is a genuine advantage if you keep lots of photos, video or apps. But storage does not settle the value question: display quality, cameras, support, repair costs and ecosystem fit also affect what you get for the money.

The iPhone 17e has a 6.1-inch OLED display, aluminum frame, notch and Face ID. It uses USB-C and has an Action button. Apple does not list ProMotion or an always-on display for this model, and it lacks the Camera Control found on some higher-tier iPhones. Its screen is a substantial step up in display technology from the LCD in the older SE, but a 60Hz panel can look less fluid when scrolling than a 90Hz or 120Hz screen.

Samsung and Google offer different display specifications across their models, so do not assume every Pixel or Galaxy wins. Check the exact phone’s refresh rate, brightness, screen size, outdoor visibility and protection rating. Also consider ergonomics: a larger display can make video and reading more comfortable, while a 6.1-inch phone is easier to manage one-handed than many larger alternatives.
Biometrics are another everyday difference. The 17e relies on Face ID; Android competitors may use an in-display fingerprint reader. Neither is automatically better—it depends on whether you prefer face unlock, a fingerprint sensor, or both.
Performance and AI: fast hardware is only one part of the decision
Apple lists its A19 chip in the iPhone 17e, along with Apple Intelligence support. The chip should make the 17e a strong choice for demanding apps, games and years of everyday use. But processor comparisons are not the same as whole-phone comparisons: an Android phone may list more RAM, and memory figures across iOS and Android are not directly comparable.

Apple Intelligence, Google’s AI tools and Samsung’s Galaxy AI features can vary by language, region, software version, account and supported app. Compare the tasks you will actually use—photo cleanup, writing help, summaries, transcription, call screening and generative image tools—rather than buying on a brand’s AI label alone. A Pixel may put Google’s photo and call features front and center; Samsung offers its own set of tools; Apple’s offering is integrated with iOS. Feature availability can change, so confirm that a specific tool works for your language and region.

Cameras: strong main camera versus more lens choices
The iPhone 17e has a 48MP Fusion rear camera, with a 2x optical-quality crop option. Apple lists next-generation portraits, Photographic Styles and Dolby Vision video recording up to 4K at 60fps. That makes the 17e appealing for video, app compatibility and a simple point-and-shoot experience.
Its main trade-off is camera flexibility: it has a single rear-camera system, not a separate ultrawide or telephoto lens. A Galaxy or Pixel model with additional cameras can capture a wider view or a dedicated zoom perspective without relying on a crop from the main camera. The exact lens mix varies by model, so check it before comparing.
- For video: The iPhone is a compelling choice if you value Dolby Vision, consistent capture and broad app support. Actual results still depend on lighting, settings and the app.
- For still photos: Pixel’s computational photography is a reason to compare it closely, particularly for HDR, low light and portraits. Do not declare a winner from megapixels or feature lists alone.
- For flexibility: Samsung models with ultrawide or telephoto lenses can cover more perspectives in hardware.
When evaluating cameras, look at moving-subject blur, night shots, portrait edges, selfies, skin tones and how quickly the camera opens—not just resolution. Without comparable controlled testing of the exact current models, there is no responsible universal “best camera” verdict.
Battery, charging and connectivity
Apple rates the iPhone 17e for up to 26 hours of video playback. That is a manufacturer measure, not a promise of 26 hours of mixed daily use. Battery endurance also depends on screen brightness, signal strength, refresh rate, apps and workload. Compare independent tests using the same method when available; battery capacity alone does not predict which phone lasts longer.

The 17e uses USB-C, which reduces cable friction for Android switchers, though a compatible power adapter may be an additional purchase. Compare wired charging speeds, wireless charging support and whether an adapter is included for the specific phone and market. Apple lists satellite emergency and messaging features, Crash Detection and roadside assistance via satellite for the 17e. Satellite service has availability and geographic limitations and is not a replacement for ordinary cellular service.
Important for US buyers: the iPhone 17e is eSIM-only. Apple says US and Puerto Rico models activate using eSIM and have no physical SIM tray. That can be inconvenient if you routinely move a physical SIM between devices, travel with local SIM cards, or use a carrier that does not support eSIM activation. Check carrier compatibility before ordering. Regional models may differ in SIM configuration, bands and features.

Apple has a history of supporting iPhones for many years, which can make a higher upfront price easier to justify if you keep a phone for a long time. However, do not treat that history as a guaranteed number of future iOS upgrades: Apple has not stated a specific update-count promise for the 17e in the supplied information. For a Pixel or Galaxy, check the exact model’s official OS and security-update commitment, including how often security patches arrive. AI features may not remain identical throughout a device’s support life.

Repairability and battery replacement matter too. Compare local service access, battery replacement cost, accidental-damage coverage and protection-plan terms before buying. AppleCare+, Samsung Care+ and Google’s protection options add cost; coverage, deductibles and eligibility differ. A plan only improves value if its protection matches your risk and how long you intend to keep the phone.

Android offers more launcher and home-screen customization, flexible file management and broad device choice; Samsung adds features such as DeX on supported models. Switching platforms can mean replacing accessories, changing messaging habits and moving purchases or backups, so a spec-sheet win may not be the best personal choice.
Which phone should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 17e if…
- You already use an iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac or iPad and want everything to work together.
- You value strong performance, iOS, video capture and app consistency more than having several rear cameras.
- You want 256GB without paying an entry-level storage upgrade.
- Satellite safety features matter, and you have confirmed their availability for your use.
Choose a Google Pixel if…
- You prefer Android and rely on Google services.
- Still photography, computational image processing, AI editing or call features are priorities.
- The current Pixel you are considering is meaningfully cheaper than the 17e at comparable storage after accounting for promotions.
Confirm the exact Pixel model sold in the US, its storage, price and update policy before deciding; an older Pixel comparison may no longer reflect today’s value options.
Choose a Samsung Galaxy if…
- You want a larger or smoother display, more customization, or multitasking features.
- You want additional camera lenses at a lower price, depending on the model.
- You want a broader range of models, from lower-priced A-series phones to the more expensive S FE tier.
- A current unlocked price or carrier offer makes the Galaxy substantially cheaper, and its Android ecosystem suits you.
The Galaxy A36 and A56 are lower-priced alternatives, while the S25 FE is closer to the 17e’s price range. They are not interchangeable competitors: compare the exact model’s display, camera hardware, support commitment and storage.

You want iOS but cannot justify $599, or you want features the 17e lacks, such as an ultrawide camera, MagSafe or a higher-end display. The trade-off is less remaining support life and potentially more battery wear. Buy from a reputable refurbisher that clearly states battery condition and offers a return policy.
How to make the final comparison
- Set a real price ceiling. Compare unlocked prices before tax, then assess carrier offers on their own terms.
- Match storage. Compare the 256GB iPhone with an Android option at similar capacity when possible.
- Rank your daily priorities. Choose among display smoothness, camera flexibility, video, battery, performance and software—not just headline specs.
- Check compatibility. Confirm eSIM support, carrier bands and any regional limits on satellite or AI features.
- Account for what you own. Include watch, earbuds, computer, cloud storage and app purchases in the switching decision.
- Check support and repair costs. Use the exact model’s official policy and local service prices rather than brand-wide assumptions.
Bottom line: The iPhone 17e is a capable entry point to Apple’s ecosystem, not a universal budget-phone winner. At $599, it is worth considering for iOS users who value performance, video, 256GB of base storage and Apple integration. Pixel can make more sense for Google-centric photography and tools; Samsung can offer a smoother or larger display, more camera versatility or a lower price. The best choice depends on the exact Android model and deal available—and on the ecosystem you already use.
