The iPhone Lock Screen is both an at-a-glance dashboard and a security boundary. You can wake and unlock your iPhone, view notifications, use Camera and selected controls, manage media, interact with supported widgets and Live Activities, and switch between personalized Lock Screens—without necessarily opening the phone.
This guide covers current iOS 26 behavior. Exact features vary by iPhone model, passcode settings, installed apps, wallpaper, and software version.
What the Lock Screen does
The Lock Screen appears when you wake your iPhone or turn it on. It can show the time, date, wallpaper, notifications, widgets, media controls, and Live Activities while restricting access to protected apps and data.
Keep these terms separate:
- Waking: Turning on the display with the side button, Raise to Wake, or tapping the screen on supported models.
- Unlocking: Passing Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode authentication.
- Locking: Pressing the side button or allowing Auto-Lock to activate.
- Opening content: Tapping a notification or widget may still require authentication before sensitive information or the full app becomes available.
Every feature available while locked involves a convenience-versus-privacy choice.

Apple’s current wake, unlock, and lock instructions provide model-specific details.
How to wake, unlock, and lock an iPhone
Wake the display
- Press the side button.
- Raise the iPhone.
- Tap the screen on supported models. Tap-to-wake is not available on iPhone SE.
Unlock with Face ID
- Tap the screen or raise the iPhone.
- Look at the device.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the Lock Screen.
Face ID can recognize you while leaving you on the Lock Screen until you swipe up. That is normal behavior, not necessarily a failed unlock.
Unlock with Touch ID
On an iPhone or iPad with a Home button, press the Home button with a registered finger.
Unlock with a passcode
Swipe up from the bottom on Face ID models, or press the Home button on Home-button models, then enter the passcode.
Lock the iPhone
Press the side button. The phone can also lock automatically according to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. A longer interval is convenient but leaves the device exposed for longer and may use more power.
Apple may require the passcode after a restart, software update, device erase, passcode change, or certain security events. Face ID and Touch ID supplement the passcode; they do not replace it.

- Camera: Swipe left, or touch and hold the Camera button where supported.
- Control Center: Swipe down from the top-right on Face ID models; swipe up from the bottom on Home-button models.
- Older notifications: Swipe up from the center of the Lock Screen.
- Widgets and Today View: Swipe right.
- Media: Use the playback controls shown for music, video, or supported remote Apple devices.
- Live Activities: Tap or interact with supported cards for navigation, sports, delivery tracking, and similar ongoing events.
These shortcuts work only to the extent permitted by Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode.
How to customize the Lock Screen
- Wake the iPhone.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Tap the Add New Lock Screen wallpaper button.
- Choose a photo, wallpaper collection, or other available category.
- Adjust the clock, wallpaper appearance, widgets, and spatial effect where supported.
- Tap Add or Done.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
To edit an existing Lock Screen, wake the iPhone, touch and hold the Lock Screen, swipe to the wallpaper, and tap Customize. If the editor does not appear, hold again and enter the passcode if prompted.
You can save multiple Lock Screens, switch between them, reorder them, and delete unwanted designs. Available clock styles, effects, and wallpaper options depend on the device and software. Spatial or 3D effects are available only with supported configurations, including supported iPhone 12 and later models; not every photo supports the effect.

Lock Screen widgets
Widgets provide glanceable information and, for some apps, limited interaction without opening the full app. Examples include checking off a Reminders item, playing a podcast, or controlling Home accessories.
Useful choices include:
- Calendar or Reminders for work and planning.
- Weather for quick decisions.
- Battery for connected accessories.
- Fitness or health data only if you are comfortable displaying it.
- Home controls only when the convenience outweighs the risk of someone operating accessories while the phone is locked.
Widgets are app-dependent, may require authentication, and do not necessarily update continuously. Their information can be visible to anyone looking at the screen.
Link Lock Screens to Focus
Different Lock Screens can support different contexts—for example, a Work screen with Calendar and Reminders, a Personal screen with weather, or a minimal Sleep screen.

- Wake the iPhone and touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Tap Focus near the bottom of the wallpaper.
- Choose Work, Personal, Sleep, Do Not Disturb, or another Focus.
- Close the picker.
Switching to a Lock Screen linked to a Focus can also switch the active Focus. If notifications change unexpectedly after switching wallpapers, check the active Focus.

Choose a notification layout
iOS can display notifications as a Count, Stack, or List. You can also pinch on the Lock Screen to change the presentation.
Hide notification previews
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Show Previews.
- Choose Always, When Unlocked, or Never, where available.
When Unlocked is a sensible privacy-focused default. It prevents message text, Mail content, and Calendar details from appearing to anyone who can see the phone.
For individual apps, you can disable Lock Screen delivery, mute notifications, send them to Notification Center, or use Scheduled Summary. Muting can stop an app from appearing on the Lock Screen, playing a sound, lighting the display, or showing a banner.

Live Activities and media controls
Live Activities show ongoing information such as Maps directions, sports updates, and food-delivery progress. They appear only when the app supports the feature and an activity is active. Some apps provide an individual setting at Settings > Apps > [app name] > Live Activities.
The Lock Screen can also control media playing on the iPhone or supported remote Apple devices. The controls and available actions depend on the app and device.
Choose what works while the iPhone is locked
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, then review Allow Access When Locked. Options can include:

For a high-security setup, consider disabling Control Center, Notification Center, Siri, Reply with Message, Home Control, USB Accessories, and any other access you do not need. This reduces Lock Screen exposure; it does not replace a strong passcode, software updates, backups, or Lost Mode.

Face ID is available on supported iPhones and iPad Pro models. It can unlock the device and authenticate purchases, Apple Pay, and compatible apps. Touch ID remains available on supported Home-button iPhones and iPads, including applicable iPhone SE models.
Set or change a passcode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Face ID & Passcode, Touch ID & Passcode, or Passcode.
- Tap Turn Passcode On.
- Enter the default six-digit code, or tap Passcode Options.
- Choose a four-digit numeric, custom numeric, or custom alphanumeric code.
- Enter it again.
A unique custom alphanumeric passcode is generally stronger than a short numeric code, although it is slower to enter. Do not reuse it elsewhere.
On iOS 17 and later, Apple documents a limited option to use the previous passcode once during the first 72 hours after changing it. This is a recovery feature, not a general bypass. You can also enable erase after ten failed attempts, but doing so can permanently delete locally stored data if the limit is reached.
If you forget the passcode, use Apple’s official passcode recovery and device restoration procedures. Recovery may require erasing the iPhone; Apple does not provide a legitimate on-device bypass that preserves protected data.
Auto-Lock and Always-On display
Change Auto-Lock at Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Choose a shorter interval for privacy and battery conservation, or a longer one when reading or navigating.
On supported iPhone models, Always-On display keeps a dimmed Lock Screen visible. You can control whether the wallpaper and notifications remain visible. The display may turn off when the iPhone is face down or covered, away from a paired Apple Watch, connected to CarPlay, using Continuity Camera, in Low Power Mode, using Sleep Focus, or around the user’s usual bedtime.

Always-On display is not available on every iPhone. See Apple’s display guide for supported behavior.
Medical ID and emergency access
Medical ID can make selected medical information and emergency contacts available from the Lock Screen for first responders. It is useful in an emergency, but information deliberately exposed from the Lock Screen can also be viewed by anyone holding the phone. Review the information before enabling locked-screen access.

Privacy-first
- Set notification previews to When Unlocked or Never.
- Disable Control Center, Siri, Reply with Message, Home Control, and USB Accessories while locked.
- Remove sensitive Calendar, health, travel, or work widgets.
- Use a strong custom alphanumeric passcode.
- Use a short or moderate Auto-Lock interval.
Balanced
- Keep Camera, media controls, and selected low-risk widgets.
- Hide previews for Messages, Mail, banking, health, and work apps.
- Disable Siri and message replies while locked.
- Retain Medical ID access if appropriate.
- Use Face ID or Touch ID with a strong passcode fallback.
Convenience-first
- Keep Control Center available.
- Use selected widgets and Live Activities.
- Allow previews for low-risk apps.
- Keep Wallet and Home controls if the phone remains physically secure.
- Choose a practical Auto-Lock interval rather than leaving the phone unlocked unnecessarily.
Troubleshooting Lock Screen problems
The Lock Screen editor does not appear
Press the side button, make sure you are viewing the Lock Screen, then touch and hold it again. Enter the passcode if prompted. Older iOS versions use a different interface, and the gesture may need to be held longer.
Face ID does not unlock the phone
Check that your face is unobstructed and the phone is positioned naturally. If the iPhone has restarted, updated, or triggered a security requirement, enter the passcode once and retry Face ID. Remember that successful recognition may still require a swipe up.
Notifications are missing
Check the active Focus, Scheduled Summary, per-app notification settings, Show Previews, and whether notifications were muted. Also check whether Notification Center is disabled while locked.
Widgets show no useful information
The app may not provide a Lock Screen widget, the widget may require authentication, its data may be stale, or a Focus or privacy setting may restrict it. Not every App Store app supports Lock Screen widgets.

Live Activities do not appear
Confirm that the app supports Live Activities, the activity is currently active, and the app’s Live Activities setting is enabled where offered. Availability can vary by app, region, account, and service.
Always-On display turns off
Check Low Power Mode, Sleep Focus, the phone’s position, CarPlay, Continuity Camera, proximity to a paired Apple Watch, and model compatibility.
Is the iMore guide still current?
The original iMore article was published in February 2022 and updated for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Its overview of Lock Screen navigation, biometrics, and passcodes remains useful historically, but it predates the modern Lock Screen gallery, multiple wallpapers, Focus linking, current widgets, Live Activities, and today’s access controls. For current instructions, Apple’s iOS 26 User Guide is the more appropriate reference.
