Apple has not announced a foldable iPhone. Current reporting points to a possible September 2026 reveal and sales later in the year, but supply problems could push shipments into 2027. The first model is expected to open like a book into a larger screen—not fold shut into a compact clamshell like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.
What is the likely launch window?
September 2026 is the leading reported announcement window, potentially alongside or near Apple’s usual fall iPhone event. That is a forecast, not a confirmed date: Apple’s public iPhone newsroom and iPhone archive had no foldable-iPhone announcement as of August 18, 2026.

These milestones are not interchangeable. A September reveal would not prove that customers could preorder immediately or find the device in stores soon afterward. Reporting by The Information and the Los Angeles Times favors a 2026 debut, while reports differ on how quickly units could ship.

Probably not in the familiar clamshell sense. “iPhone Flip” is a convenient search phrase, but current reporting more consistently describes a book-style design: a phone-sized outer screen opens to reveal a larger, tablet-like display. That is closer to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold than its Galaxy Z Flip.

Rumor coverage has used names including “iPhone Fold” and, more recently, “iPhone Ultra.” Apple has confirmed neither. A separate clamshell Apple phone has been discussed as a possibility, but its timing is less clear and one report says that concept was postponed while Apple prioritized the book-style device. What might Apple’s foldable look like?
Reports describe an inward-folding phone with a conventional outer display for everyday use and a larger inner display when opened. Rumored dimensions vary: estimates put the outside screen around 5.3 to 5.5 inches and the inner screen around 7.7 to 7.8 inches. These are not Apple specifications; prototype measurements and reporting may differ. MacRumors’ February 2026 report and Macworld’s coverage discuss those estimates.

Crease reduction is reportedly a design priority, and some coverage has made stronger claims about minimizing the crease. Treat “crease-free” as an unverified claim, not a guaranteed feature. No final details about the hinge, screen protection, cameras, battery, thickness, weight, water resistance or software have been published by Apple.

A foldable combines a flexible display, hinge and moving structural parts in a device expected to survive everyday use. Manufacturing yields, display and hinge tolerances, durability testing and initial supply can all complicate a first release. The uncertainty is chiefly about production and shipping—not evidence that Apple has cancelled the project.

Some reporting says Apple remains on course for a September introduction, while supply-chain accounts warn that shipment could come later, potentially in 2027. MacRumors’ April 2026 summary lays out the conflicting outlook; AppleInsider’s June 2026 report describes the later-shipment scenario. The practical forecast is a late-2026 target with a meaningful risk of limited supply or shipments in 2027.
How much might it cost?
Rumor and analyst coverage puts a U.S. starting price around $2,000 to $2,500. Apple has not set or announced a price, and estimates may not reflect storage tiers, taxes, trade-in offers or carrier financing. MacRumors’ pricing roundup attributes the range to estimates, not an Apple price list.

A premium is plausible because foldable OLED panels and hinge assemblies are more complex than conventional phone components, and a first-generation product may be produced in smaller volumes. Those factors explain the estimate; they do not establish what Apple will charge.
For context, Samsung’s U.S. announcement listed the Galaxy Z Flip8 at $1,199.99 and the book-style Galaxy Z Fold8 at $1,899.99. Samsung said the lineup would be generally available August 7, 2026. What Apple would need to get right
A larger screen alone would not make a foldable a good everyday iPhone. Buyers should judge the finished product on practical details Apple has not yet confirmed:
- Durability and repair: hinge lifespan, screen protection, dust resistance, warranty coverage and repair costs.
- Crease and comfort: how visible the fold is in use, and whether the closed phone is comfortable to carry and hold.
- Battery and cameras: whether the larger display and folding structure compromise endurance or camera capability compared with an iPhone Pro.
- Software: whether iOS supports useful multitasking, split-screen work, app scaling and smooth continuity between closed and open modes.
- Price and supply: whether the added flexibility justifies a likely premium and whether buyers can actually obtain one.
Apple’s patents and long-running foldable discussions show that the company has explored the category, not that a particular commercial product is guaranteed. A foldable would need to balance thickness, weight, battery capacity, cameras and durability as well as screen size.

Samsung’s official U.S. starting prices make the current comparison concrete: $1,199.99 for the Flip8 and $1,899.99 for the Fold8, versus a rumored $2,000–$2,500 range for Apple.
