If your iPhone’s Battery Health number has fallen, it usually reflects normal battery aging or an updated estimate—not proof that the battery suddenly lost that exact amount of capacity. Check the battery’s service message, repair history and real-world runtime before deciding what to do. A one-point change alone rarely calls for repair.
What “Maximum Capacity” means
Maximum Capacity estimates how much energy your iPhone battery can store compared with when it was new. It is not the charge level shown in the status bar, and it is not a direct measurement precise enough to treat each percentage point as an exact amount of physical wear. - Charge level is how much charge is available now.
- Maximum Capacity is the estimated storage capability relative to a new battery.
- Peak Performance Capability indicates whether the battery can supply the power needed for demanding tasks without an unexpected shutdown. An aged battery may lead iOS to manage performance.
- Cycle count tracks cumulative use equivalent to a full battery’s capacity. Several partial discharges can add up to one cycle; it does not mean one plug-in or one trip from 100% to 0%.
Battery capacity naturally declines as lithium-ion batteries chemically age. Usage, charging, temperature and time all affect how quickly this happens, so there is no dependable “normal percentage drop per month” that applies to every iPhone.
Why might iPhone Battery Health drop?
Ordinary aging and accumulated use are the most common reasons. Charging and discharging move energy through the battery, while age and heat contribute to chemical wear. High workloads such as gaming, navigation, camera use, bright screens and weak cellular reception can drain the phone faster. They can explain poor daily runtime, but do not necessarily explain a sudden change in Maximum Capacity.

Heat deserves particular attention: sustained high temperatures can accelerate battery aging. Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or exposing it to prolonged heat while charging. Apple also provides charging-management features intended to reduce time spent fully charged in certain situations; they can help manage charging, but they do not stop aging or restore lost capacity. A number that appears to drop suddenly may instead be an estimate revision. iOS calculates battery-health information from measurements and algorithms, and it can update the estimate as it gathers information. A software update may also coincide with background work—such as indexing or app updates—that temporarily affects runtime. Neither situation proves that the update physically damaged the battery.
There is one specifically documented reporting issue: Apple introduced a recalibration process for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max with iOS 14.5. It can take several weeks of regular charge cycles. This is not a general explanation for every model or a promise that capacity will rise. If the phone has been repaired, a replacement battery may also affect the reading. A battery that is nongenuine, damaged, previously used or not correctly verified can report inaccurate health information or behave unexpectedly. Apple explains the implications in its guide to genuine iPhone batteries.
Check the battery and repair history
The menu depends on the model and iOS version:
- iPhone 15 and later with iOS 17.4 or later: Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Review Maximum Capacity, Cycle Count, Manufacture Date, Date of First Use and any replacement recommendation shown.
- iPhone 11, 12, 13 and 14: Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Review Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance Capability.
- Older models: Labels and available details vary. You may see an important battery message or be unable to view some health information.
Apple lists the model and software distinctions in its iPhone battery information guide.
If the phone has had a repair, check Settings → General → About → Parts & Service History on supported models. Depending on the model and iOS version, the battery may be labeled Genuine, Used, Unknown Part or Finish Repair. iPhone XR, iPhone XS models and later support battery repair-history information; on iPhone 15 and later with iOS 18, a genuine previously used battery may be labeled Used. What to do after a sudden drop
- Note the details: Record your iPhone model, iOS version, Maximum Capacity and any battery message. This makes a change easier to discuss with support.
- Check for a recent repair: Review Parts & Service History if available, especially if the phone or battery was replaced recently.
- Separate capacity from drain: If the number changed but runtime seems normal, an estimate adjustment or ordinary aging is plausible. If the number is stable but runtime suddenly worsened, check Settings → Battery for recent app or system activity, and consider screen brightness, signal strength, heat and changed usage.
- Restart and observe normal use: Give the phone several ordinary charge cycles rather than repeatedly checking the percentage. Do not expect this to reverse physical wear.
- Install an available iOS update if appropriate: It may address software issues, but it is not a battery-capacity repair and cannot reverse chemical aging.
- Arrange a diagnostic when symptoms warrant it: Seek professional inspection for a rapidly worsening reading, severe runtime loss, unexpected shutdowns, an incompatible-looking health reading or a service recommendation.
Repeatedly draining the phone to 0% and charging it to 100% is not a way to restore lost battery capacity. For the iPhone 11 recalibration Apple describes, the process happens through regular charge cycles; if it fails and a service message appears, Apple directs users to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
How much capacity is too low?
Apple’s design targets are at least 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and after 1,000 complete cycles for iPhone 15 models, under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not a guarantee for every user or a prediction of exactly when an individual battery will reach 80%. Actual results vary. Apple provides the qualifications on its battery service and recycling page.
Below 80% does not automatically mean every person must replace a battery immediately. Treat it as an important service benchmark, then consider iOS’s recommendation, runtime, shutdowns, performance and coverage. A relatively new phone can also display slightly less than 100%, including because time passed between manufacture and activation.

A battery-health service message by itself is a recommendation to investigate or replace the battery, not automatically a safety emergency. Physical warning signs such as swelling or extreme heat are different and deserve prompt attention.

Replacement is most compelling when iOS recommends service, capacity is below 80% and runtime no longer meets your needs, the phone shuts down unexpectedly, or a diagnostic confirms significant degradation. If the iPhone otherwise does what you need, a battery replacement can be more proportionate than buying a new phone. A new device may make more sense if the phone also has major damage, inadequate storage, poor performance, outdated software support or repair costs that do not fit its remaining value.

Start with Apple’s battery service page for the model-specific estimate and available service routes. Final pricing may depend on inspection, location, taxes, shipping and provider fees, so a single universal price is not reliable.

You can also compare an Apple Authorized Service Provider or a qualified Independent Repair Provider. Ask about the battery used, repair verification, warranty, data handling and final estimate. Genuine parts may be available through independent providers, but their work is not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare plans; the provider may offer its own warranty. Apple’s repair page can help locate service options.
Self Service Repair is intended for people with the experience, tools and model eligibility to perform the work. An iPhone battery is a built-in lithium-ion component, and replacement can be hazardous if mishandled. Genuine parts being available does not make self-repair the right option for everyone.

- “It dropped 1%, so the battery lost exactly 1% overnight.” Maximum Capacity is an estimate and may update in steps.
- “Every iOS update damages battery health.” An update can coincide with estimate changes or temporary background work; that does not establish physical battery damage.
- “Calibration will make capacity go back up.” Recalibration can affect reporting in a documented case; it cannot reverse chemical aging.
- “Below 80% means immediate replacement for everyone.” It is a useful Apple design and service benchmark. The decision also depends on symptoms, recommendations and coverage.
- “A third-party app can reset battery health.” Treat app or desktop readings as estimates or indirect data. They cannot restore physical capacity and should not override an iOS warning or professional diagnostic.
