Counterpoint Research reported that the iPhone 17 family sold 14% more units than the iPhone 16 family during each generation’s first 10 days of availability in the United States and China. The October 20, 2025 finding is an early sell-through comparison in two markets—not a worldwide result, a full-quarter forecast or an official Apple unit-sales report.
What Counterpoint measured
Counterpoint’s October 20 report compared the first 10 days each iPhone generation was available in the U.S. and China. The underlying data was described in contemporaneous coverage as Counterpoint’s China and US Q3 2025 Weekly Smartphone Sell-Out Tracker. Sell-out refers to sales through to consumers or end customers; it should not be confused with Apple’s shipments to retailers or treated as an audited Apple sales total.
| Model group | Reported early result |
|---|---|
| iPhone 17 family | 14% more units than the iPhone 16 family across the U.S. and China |
| Standard iPhone 17 | 31% more across the two markets |
| Standard iPhone 17 in China | Nearly twice the iPhone 16’s sales |
| iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max | 12% more combined than the corresponding iPhone 16 models |
| iPhone Air versus iPhone 16 Plus | Slightly higher early sales, but not a fully like-for-like comparison |
The model-specific figures were reported in BGR’s coverage of Counterpoint’s findings. They show why the headline 14% figure needs context: the base model led the reported gains in China, while the Pro Max was especially strong in the U.S.
The standard iPhone 17 was the main growth driver
Counterpoint attributed the base iPhone 17’s appeal partly to a stronger value proposition. Its reported U.S. starting price was $799, the same as the iPhone 16’s starting price, while the newer model added hardware improvements including a faster chip, an improved display, more base storage and an upgraded selfie camera. In China, local channel discounts and coupons reportedly made the standard model more compelling still.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Those are plausible demand drivers, not proof that any one feature caused the increase. Nor does a $799 list price tell you what a particular buyer paid: retailer discounts, financing, trade-in credits and carrier promotions can change the effective cost. When comparing offers, check whether a credit is paid upfront or spread across monthly bills, and whether it requires a qualifying plan, eligible trade-in or long financing term.
U.S. buyers leaned toward the Pro Max
The U.S. pattern was different from China’s value-led base-model surge. Counterpoint’s reported breakdown identified the iPhone 17 Pro Max as the strongest-demand model in the U.S. Carrier trade-in promotions may have helped: maximum subsidies were reportedly about $100 higher than for the prior generation. These offers can lower the apparent monthly cost of a premium phone, but they do not show what demand would have been without the incentives.

For buyers, compare the total cost rather than the promotional headline. A large carrier credit may require a more expensive plan, an installment agreement and remaining with the carrier for the credit period. An Apple trade-in may be simpler, while a carrier offer may have a higher nominal value; the best option depends on the full terms and your existing plan.

The iPhone 17 lineup introduced the iPhone Air, while the previous generation included the iPhone 16 Plus. Counterpoint’s reported early comparison put the Air slightly ahead of the Plus, but the Air was not yet available in China during the initial window. That availability difference, alongside the change in lineup, makes the family totals less directly comparable than a simple model-for-model table suggests.

What the 14% result does—and does not—tell us
- It is limited to two markets. The reported comparison covers the United States and China, not global sales or every country where the phones launched.
- It covers only the first 10 days. Preorders, launch enthusiasm, early upgrades, promotions, stock availability and rollout timing can make this period unlike later weeks. It is a demand signal, not a full-quarter forecast.
- It measures units, not revenue or profit. Average selling prices, storage choices, model mix, discounts and incentives can all affect revenue differently from unit volume.
- It does not establish that every model won. The reported gains differ by model, and the Air-to-Plus comparison has a launch-timing caveat.
- It does not prove a lasting China recovery or a better product in every respect. Early sales alone cannot establish long-term market share, customer satisfaction, reliability, camera quality, battery life or profitability.

The early result points to two distinct buying patterns: the standard iPhone 17 offered a persuasive feature-and-price combination, particularly in China, while U.S. Pro Max demand appears to have benefited from premium appeal and carrier incentives. It does not tell an individual buyer which phone is best.

If you are choosing now, compare a discounted iPhone 16 with the standard iPhone 17 based on the actual price gap, storage and features you will use. Consider the Pro Max if its larger display and higher-end capabilities matter enough to justify its cost, including any plan requirement attached to a promotion. Check current availability and terms directly with Apple or your carrier; launch-period prices and offers are not a reliable guide to today’s deal.

For investors, the report is evidence of stronger early demand in two important markets, but it does not by itself establish a full-year unit forecast, revenue or margin outcome, durable China recovery or stock valuation.
Bottom line: Counterpoint’s 14% figure is a meaningful early signal, led by the standard iPhone 17 in China and strong Pro Max demand in the U.S. Its scope is much narrower than saying the iPhone 17 outsold the iPhone 16 worldwide.
