Short answer: Buy the iPhone 16 for Apple-device integration, dependable video, gaming consistency and MagSafe. Choose the Galaxy S24 for a 120Hz display, a true 3x telephoto camera, faster wired charging, reverse wireless charging and deeper Android customization. Both launched at about $800 in the US, but they are previous-generation phones as of August 2026, so the better purchase is whichever has the larger verified discount versus newer models.

Which is better overall?
There is no universal winner. At the same price, the Galaxy S24 is the more versatile hardware package: its screen refreshes at up to 120Hz and it has a dedicated optical-zoom camera. The iPhone 16 is the safer choice for people already using Apple services and accessories, and it remains the stronger video and continuity platform.
- Best overall for an iPhone owner: iPhone 16.
- Best overall for an Android or Google user: Galaxy S24.
- Best hardware flexibility: Galaxy S24.
- Best video and ecosystem continuity: iPhone 16.
Are these phones genuinely comparable?
Yes. Both are compact, premium, non-Pro/non-Ultra flagships, with similar launch prices and OLED displays. The S24 is slightly taller with a marginally larger screen and more camera hardware. The iPhone 16 launched later with Apple’s newer A18 chip. A Galaxy review from one country cannot automatically represent another: identify whether the handset uses Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy or Exynos 2400 before applying performance or battery results.

Design, size and durability
The iPhone 16 uses an aluminum frame, a glass back and a Ceramic Shield front. It adds an Action button and a dedicated Camera Control button. The S24 uses an aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2, with a conventional side-button layout and Samsung’s wider Galaxy accessory ecosystem.
Both carry an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. That does not make either phone waterproof: seals can weaken with age or repair, and liquid damage is not a permanent warranty guarantee. Their different aspect ratios and edge treatments affect grip more than the small difference in screen size.
Display: the Galaxy’s clearest advantage
The practical difference is refresh rate, not pixel count. The S24’s adaptive 1–120Hz panel makes scrolling, animations and supported games visibly smoother. The iPhone 16’s 60Hz OLED can still feel responsive, but it is not display-equivalent to a 120Hz phone. Both support HDR and high outdoor brightness; Samsung generally emphasizes higher peak outdoor brightness, while real visibility depends on automatic brightness, sunlight and viewing angle.
The S24 also supports an always-on display. The iPhone offers a lock-screen experience but not the same 1–120Hz always-on implementation found on the Galaxy.

Performance and gaming
Apple’s A18 delivers excellent single-core performance, video processing and consistent game optimization. The S24 is also a high-end Android performer, with strong multitasking and gaming capability. Everyday apps should feel fast on either phone; benchmark differences are less important than the exact S24 chipset, software version and game optimization.
Do not quote one universal S24 benchmark. US units use Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, while some regions use Exynos 2400; heat and battery behavior can differ. For sustained gaming, the iPhone’s tightly controlled hardware-software stack is the safer consistency choice. The Galaxy gives you more Android multitasking flexibility and typically more memory headroom for keeping apps open.
Cameras: flexibility versus consistency
Hardware
The iPhone 16 has a 48MP Fusion main camera, 12MP ultrawide, 12MP front camera and a 2x crop option from the main sensor. The S24 has a 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP front camera and a dedicated 10MP 3x optical telephoto. The specifications are listed by Apple and Samsung.
Photos and portraits
Both produce strong daylight photos and portraits. Samsung often renders scenes with more contrast and vivid color; Apple commonly favors a more restrained, consistent look. Skin tones, motion handling and exposure matter more than megapixel totals, so neither main camera is an automatic winner.

Zoom and ultrawide
The Galaxy wins long-range flexibility. Its 3x optical lens is useful for portraits, concerts, children, pets and distant signs; the iPhone’s 2x option is a crop from the main sensor and is not equivalent to a separate 3x lens. Ultrawide and close-focus results can change with software updates and scene lighting, so compare sample images if those modes are priorities.
Video
The iPhone 16 is the safer video recommendation for stabilization, color consistency, audio capture and predictable results across social apps. It also offers advanced 4K and spatial-video-related modes depending on the selected setting and software. The S24 can record excellent video, but Samsung’s strength here is broader camera flexibility rather than the most consistently effortless workflow.
Night shots and selfies
Night results depend on movement, available light and each phone’s processing choices. For selfies, compare exposure, skin texture, edge separation and video quality instead of front-camera resolution alone. Claims that one phone always wins low light or selfies are too broad for these models.
Battery life and charging
The S24 has a 4,000mAh battery; Apple does not present iPhone capacity as a directly comparable specification and instead publishes rated video-playback figures. Capacity alone cannot establish endurance. Refresh-rate settings, signal strength, chipset region, gaming, camera use, background synchronization and always-on display settings all matter.

Comparative testing from Tom’s Guide and Digital Trends treats battery life as close and workload-dependent. The S24 often lasts a full day and can go longer under moderate use, while iPhone 16 endurance varies by workload. These are review results, not a guarantee for every regional model.
The S24 supports 25W wired charging, wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare. The iPhone 16 uses USB-C and supports MagSafe magnetic charging plus wireless charging. Neither is a charging-speed leader by 2026 standards, and a power adapter may not be included by the retailer or market.

iPhone 16
The iPhone 16 launched with iOS 18 and hardware designed for Apple Intelligence. Individual features depend on the current iOS release, language, country, account and internet access. Check Apple’s live feature list before buying; “supports Apple Intelligence” does not mean every feature is available everywhere or at the same time.
Galaxy S24
The S24 launched with Android 14 and One UI 6.1. Samsung’s stated policy is seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S24 series, counted from its launch policy rather than seven new years from the date you buy it. Galaxy AI availability can depend on software version, region, language, Samsung account, connectivity and possible service requirements. Samsung’s policy is documented in its official announcement.

- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Ecosystem and switching costs
iPhone advantages include iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch, AirPods, Mac continuity, AirDrop, iCloud and broad accessory availability. Galaxy advantages include Android launchers and widgets, deeper default-app and file-management control, Google and Windows integration, Smart Switch and Galaxy wearables. Apple Watch cannot be used with Android, and Galaxy Watch capabilities can be reduced on iPhone. Purchased apps, passwords, photos, messages and subscriptions may not transfer perfectly.
Connectivity and storage
- Both phones use USB-C and have no microSD slot.
- The S24 launch specification includes Wi-Fi 7, but compatible routers, bands and regional approvals determine actual use.
- US carrier models can differ from international versions in modem bands, eSIM behavior and processor.
- Compare equal capacities: a discounted 256GB S24 may be better value than a similarly priced 128GB iPhone 16.
Value in 2026: price matters more than launch MSRP
The launch prices—$799 for a 128GB iPhone 16 and $799.99 for a 128GB S24 in the US—are historical reference points, not current offers. By August 2026, availability may be clearance, refurbished, open-box or carrier stock. Verify the exact unlocked price, storage, condition and warranty on the day you buy. Apple’s current lineup can be checked at Apple’s iPhone page; Samsung availability and promotions appear on its S24 buying guide and offers page.
| Price situation | Practical recommendation |
|---|---|
| Same price | Galaxy S24 for hardware versatility; iPhone 16 for Apple ecosystem and video. |
| iPhone 16 up to about $50 more | Reasonable premium for an Apple user or video-focused buyer. |
| S24 at least $100 cheaper | Usually the stronger value if new or covered by a credible warranty. |
| Refurbished or open-box | Check battery health, return window, unlocked status, IMEI, repair quality and warranty. |
| Price close to a current-generation phone | Prefer the newer model unless the older device is substantially discounted. |
Carrier “free” offers may require a qualifying plan, trade-in, new line, upgrade or multi-year bill credits. Compare the total commitment, not the headline monthly price. For Samsung trade-ins, review the terms at Samsung Trade-In; for Apple, use Apple Trade In.
Who should buy the iPhone 16?
- You already use a Mac, Apple Watch, iPad, AirPods or Apple services.
- Video reliability matters more than optical zoom.
- You want A18 performance in a compact iPhone.
- You prefer iOS simplicity, MagSafe and strong resale demand.
- Your family or workplace relies on iMessage or FaceTime.
Who should buy the Galaxy S24?
- You want smooth 120Hz scrolling and an always-on display.
- You need a real 3x telephoto lens.
- You use Android, Google or Windows services heavily.
- You value launchers, widgets, multitasking, file handling and default-app control.
- You find the S24 materially cheaper than the iPhone 16.
When to skip both
Compare newer iPhone or Galaxy generations if either older model costs nearly as much, or if you need a larger battery, much faster charging, more advanced zoom or the longest remaining support window. A newer phone can also make more sense when a carrier’s trade-in credits erase most of the price difference.
Verdict
The Galaxy S24 is the better hardware bargain when prices are close: 120Hz, optical 3x zoom, flexible software and faster charging. The iPhone 16 is the better ecosystem and video purchase, especially for existing Apple users. In 2026, neither should be bought at an unverified legacy price; choose the one with the stronger net cost after storage, trade-in terms, warranty and the price of a comparable newer model.
