Specific Apple listings checked were $849 for a 256GB Pro and $1,189 for a 1TB Pro. Retailer pre-owned listings can cost more and may include a shorter warranty or a used battery. Prices and availability change frequently.

The Apple 256GB refurbished listing was $150 below its stated former price of $999; its 1TB listing was $210 below $1,399. The Pro Max starting price is for the range, so check the exact capacity, color, condition and warranty on the listing before comparing it with another phone. Apple’s 256GB refurbished Pro listing and 1TB listing show the specific configurations.
What the iPhone 16 Pro originally cost
When Apple introduced the iPhone 16 Pro in September 2024, its starting price was $999. The iPhone 16 Pro Max started at $1,199. Those are launch prices, not a reliable guide to what an older model costs now: the current buying options are more likely to be refurbished or pre-owned, and price depends heavily on capacity and condition. MacRumors reported Apple’s refurbished starting prices of $759 for the Pro and $929 for the Pro Max.

Is the iPhone 16 Pro still sold new?
Apple’s official store listings found for this pricing check were Certified Refurbished models, rather than new iPhone 16 Pro units. Retailers may still have new-in-box stock, alongside pre-owned, refurbished or marketplace listings, but the evidence here does not establish that new stock is universally available. Check who sells and fulfills a listing and read its condition and return terms; a retailer or marketplace offer is not the same product condition or coverage as Apple Certified Refurbished.
What Apple Certified Refurbished means
Apple says its certified-refurbished iPhones receive a new battery and outer shell and come with a one-year limited warranty, manuals and accessories, and new white packaging. Apple also lists a 14-day return policy and AppleCare eligibility, subject to its terms. It is still a refurbished device, not factory-new, but those provisions can make it a better-value purchase than a slightly cheaper used phone with limited coverage. Confirm the live listing’s terms before ordering.

By comparison, the checked Best Buy “pre-owned excellent” iPhone 16 Pro listing says the phone has been inspected and verified to function, but cosmetic blemishes may remain. It may not include all original parts or accessories, comes in non-original packaging with a data cable, and has a 90-day warranty. See the specific Best Buy listing for its terms. “Pre-owned,” “refurbished,” “renewed” and “certified refurbished” are not standardized synonyms; check the seller’s battery policy, warranty, returns and accessories rather than relying on the label.

Why it is called an “AI iPhone”
“AI iPhone” is a marketing shorthand, not a separate model or paid hardware tier. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max use Apple’s A18 Pro chip and support Apple Intelligence. Apple’s product listing identifies Apple Intelligence as a capability of the device. The standard iPhone 16 family also has compatible hardware; owning a Pro Max does not unlock a separate or better AI tier.

Apple Intelligence features include writing tools, notification and message summaries, Genmoji, Image Playground, Siri improvements and visual intelligence, with other camera-related features and supported third-party service integrations depending on the feature. Availability can vary by iOS version, language, region and rollout. Check Apple’s current product information and the current Apple Intelligence availability details for the features and languages you need. Do not assume every advertised feature is available everywhere or simply because the phone can install a newer iOS version.
iPhone 16 Pro vs. Pro Max: what does the extra money buy?
The Pro has a 6.3-inch display and starts at 128GB; the 6.9-inch Pro Max starts at 256GB. Both use the A18 Pro platform and support Apple Intelligence, so paying more for the Max is not paying for exclusive AI. Apple rates the Pro for up to 27 hours of video playback; actual battery life varies with use, settings and condition. The larger Max is the choice for people who value a bigger screen and battery capacity, while the smaller Pro costs less at its entry capacity and is easier to handle one-handed.

- Choose the iPhone 16 Pro if you want the lower entry price, a smaller phone, or a Pro model with up to 1TB of storage.
- Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max if the larger screen, 256GB minimum storage and battery preference justify its higher price and size.
- Do not pay a large Max premium for AI alone. The core Apple Intelligence platform is shared.
How to judge a pre-owned listing
Before buying from a retailer or marketplace, check the exact listing rather than relying on a broad “excellent” or “refurbished” grade:

- Battery: Ask how battery condition is guaranteed. After receiving the phone, check Settings for Battery Health and Charging information, including Maximum Capacity; inspect Parts and Service History where available.
- Warranty and returns: Compare the coverage period and return window with Apple’s one-year warranty and 14-day return policy. A small price saving may not compensate for much shorter coverage.
- Seller and condition: Confirm whether the retailer itself or a marketplace seller is responsible for the sale and returns. Note any stated cosmetic wear and missing or generic accessories.
- Activation and carrier status: Confirm the phone is not Activation Locked and is unlocked for your intended carrier. Verify the exact listing’s carrier compatibility before purchase.
- Storage and color: Compare like with like. A 128GB Pro is not directly comparable to a 256GB Pro Max, and color or capacity availability may affect the price.
For the two checked Best Buy listings, the 256GB pre-owned Pro at $899.99 was $50 more than Apple’s observed 256GB Certified Refurbished Pro at $849, while offering a 90-day rather than one-year warranty and not promising a new battery. That is a comparison of those specific observed listings, not a claim that Apple is always cheaper. If Apple stock is gone, compare the live offers on total price, capacity, condition and protections.

Connectivity and extra costs to factor in
The U.S. iPhone 16 Pro uses eSIM and does not have a physical SIM-card slot. Apple lists dual eSIM support. That can be convenient with compatible carriers, but may be a drawback when traveling somewhere that relies on physical SIM cards. Confirm eSIM support and carrier compatibility before buying, especially for international use; “unlocked” does not guarantee compatibility with every network or plan.
The listed phone price also may not be your total cost. Budget for sales tax, a USB-C power adapter if you need one, optional MagSafe accessories, AppleCare or another protection plan, and any carrier activation or upgrade fee. Apple says the power adapter and MagSafe charger are sold separately. If you are considering carrier financing or a trade-in promotion, calculate the required plan cost, trade-in eligibility, length of bill credits and what happens if you switch carriers or pay off the phone early. Do not compare a promotion’s advertised monthly payment with an unlocked price until you have worked out the effective total.
When the iPhone 16 Pro is a good buy
The 16 Pro makes sense when you want its Pro camera features, compact Pro size, higher-storage option or Apple Intelligence compatibility, and the refurbished price leaves a meaningful gap versus a newer phone. Apple Certified Refurbished is the more straightforward option if the right capacity is in stock and its warranty and new battery are worth the price to you.
Compare newer models before buying if a current phone is only modestly more expensive, or if you prioritize a newer processor, newer camera or connectivity features, resale value or a longer remaining support horizon. Avoid paying close to a newer model’s price for a high-capacity used 16 Pro with a short warranty unless you specifically need that configuration. The value is in the whole deal—not just the word “AI” or the lowest number on a listing.
