Not every iPhone 12 yellow or green tint has the same cause. Apple’s iOS 14.5 release notes documented an optimization that reduced a dim greenish glow on iPhone 12 models at low brightness with black backgrounds. However, a screen that remains visibly yellow or green on normal white and gray content after settings and software checks is more likely to have a display calibration or hardware problem.
There is no verified blanket Apple replacement program for every affected iPhone 12. The practical approach is to identify the symptom, rule out display settings, check for a replacement screen, update iOS, and then obtain an individual service diagnosis.
Which iPhones were affected?
The reports involved the OLED-equipped iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Public reports varied between individual phones, so they do not establish that every unit—or every display supplier—had a defect.

- Uniform warm or yellow cast: white backgrounds look cream-colored across Settings, Safari, Photos, and other apps.
- Green cast on dark content: dark gray, black wallpapers, video letterboxing, or dark mode reveal a green tone.
- Low-brightness glow or flicker: a dim greenish or uneven glow appears mainly below moderate brightness.
- Edge or corner discoloration: green or yellow patches concentrate around the borders.
- Scrolling hue shift: dark content changes color or appears blurred while scrolling at low brightness.
- Pink/green smearing or crushed blacks: a separate OLED response or calibration symptom that should not automatically be labelled the same “yellow tint” issue.
Screen photographs can exaggerate color because of camera white balance, exposure, HDR processing, and viewing angle. Use photos as documentation, but compare the phone in person with another iPhone under the same lighting.

What iOS 14.5 actually addressed
On April 26, 2021, Apple said iOS 14.5 included an optimization to reduce the appearance of a dim glow on iPhone 12 models when brightness was reduced and the background was black. That is a narrow condition—not a promise that every yellow or green cast would disappear.
In other words, iOS 14.5 may have improved a low-brightness, black-background glow, but it did not establish that all persistent yellow screens were software bugs. Install the latest iOS version offered for the phone before service, but do not treat an update as a guaranteed cure for physical nonuniformity.

Normal OLED behavior versus a defective-looking display
Apple’s Super Retina display guidance says OLED iPhones can show slight blur or color changes at low brightness against black backgrounds, particularly while scrolling. Minor viewing-angle variation can also be normal.

How to test your iPhone 12
- Turn off True Tone: go to Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone. True Tone changes color temperature according to ambient light. See Apple’s explanation at this support page.
- Turn off Night Shift: in Settings → Display & Brightness → Night Shift, disable the feature. Night Shift intentionally warms the screen.
- Check accessibility display controls: open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size and turn off Color Filters, Color Tint, Invert Colors, and Reduce White Point.
- Test Auto-Brightness: in the same Display & Text Size menu, temporarily disable Auto-Brightness. Manually test low, medium, and high brightness. Ambient light can otherwise change the result.
- Use controlled images: view pure white, neutral gray, black, dark gray, white-background text, and dark-mode scrolling content. Test indoors under neutral lighting, straight on and at normal viewing distance.
- Restart and update: install the latest iOS available for the device, then repeat the tests.
A screenshot records the rendered image, not the physical color produced by the OLED panel. Therefore, a screenshot that looks normal on another device does not disprove a faulty display.

Signs the problem is probably hardware or calibration-related
Seek a display diagnosis when the tint:
- remains after True Tone, Night Shift, Color Filters, and Reduce White Point are disabled;
- is obvious on white or gray backgrounds at ordinary brightness;
- appears in unrelated apps and immediately after startup;
- is localized, uneven, worsening, or accompanied by touch or brightness problems;
- started after an impact, liquid exposure, pressure, overheating, or screen replacement;
- looks different from another iPhone showing the same test image under identical lighting.
Apple’s current genuine-display guidance lists incorrect color calibration, uneven brightness, reduced maximum brightness, touch issues, ambient-light-sensor problems, and loss of reliable True Tone behavior among possible consequences of a nongenuine or improperly verified display. A genuine replacement may resolve a defective panel, but that is evidence about that particular phone—not proof of one universal iPhone 12 failure mechanism.
Check whether the display was replaced
On iPhone 11 and later, open Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History.

- Genuine: the display was identified as a genuine Apple part installed through supported processes.
- Unknown Part: the part may be nongenuine, not functioning as expected, not verified or linked correctly, or otherwise unable to authenticate.
A missing Parts and Service History section does not prove the original screen is installed, and “Genuine” does not guarantee that a panel has no defect. An “Unknown Part” warning does not necessarily make the phone unusable, but it can affect reliability and resale value.

Can Apple repair it for free?
Apple’s documentation confirms the iOS 14.5 software mitigation, not a universal free display-replacement program. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for an individual diagnosis. Coverage depends on country, warranty or AppleCare status, purchase details, and the technician’s findings. Apple’s warranty generally excludes accidental damage, liquid damage, unauthorized modifications, and certain external damage; see the iPhone warranty terms.

Apple’s iPhone 12 repair manual includes dedicated display and image troubleshooting. Service may be available through an Apple Store, Authorized Service Provider, Apple Repair Center, eligible Independent Repair Provider, or Self Service Repair, depending on location and device.
Repair, third-party screen, or replacement phone?
Before service, back up the phone and record the tint under controlled lighting, including the brightness level and test images. Ask whether the proposed remedy is software troubleshooting, a display replacement, whole-device replacement, or paid out-of-warranty repair.
- Repair is more sensible when the phone is otherwise in excellent condition, coverage applies, or Apple confirms a display fault at a reasonable cost.
- Replace or trade in when the phone also has poor battery health, cracked back glass, camera or charging faults, or a repair quote close to its used-market value. Apple’s Trade In estimate depends on model and condition and can change after inspection.
- Use a third-party display cautiously: it may cost less, but Apple warns nongenuine parts can introduce color, touch, brightness, sensor, True Tone, and battery-related problems.
- Avoid DIY repair if you lack experience opening sealed phones, need dependable Face ID, sensors, True Tone, calibration, or water-resistance seals, or the phone remains under warranty or AppleCare. Self Service Repair is intended for experienced users who can follow the manual, use the correct tools, and complete post-repair configuration.
Buying a used or refurbished iPhone 12
Test the phone before paying or ensure a meaningful return period. Check:
- white and neutral-gray screens at normal brightness;
- black and dark-gray screens at low brightness;
- dark-mode scrolling for glow, flicker, or smearing;
- True Tone availability and behavior;
- maximum brightness and touch response;
- Parts and Service History for Genuine or Unknown Part messages;
- warranty, return terms, and any disclosed repair history.
Do not rely on a seller’s screen photograph alone, and do not assume a recently replaced display is automatically better than the original.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A faint glow limited to black content at very low brightness may be normal OLED behavior or the narrow issue Apple reduced in iOS 14.5. If the iPhone 12 remains obviously yellow or green on ordinary white and gray content after settings and software checks, treat it as a likely display hardware or calibration problem and obtain a service diagnosis before deciding whether to repair, replace, or trade in the phone.
