The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro share the same Face ID gestures and button shortcuts, so most of these time-savers work on both models. Update to the latest iOS your phone supports first; Apple lists both models as compatible with iOS 26, although individual features can still depend on iOS version, language, region, app support, or Apple Account settings. Menu names may vary slightly after updates.

Navigation shortcuts
1. Switch between recent apps with a swipe
Swipe left or right along the thin bar at the bottom of the screen. It is the fastest way to alternate between two apps, such as Safari and Notes, without opening the app switcher.
2. Open the app switcher correctly
Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause briefly around the middle of the display. Release when the app cards appear. A quick flick usually returns Home instead. Swipe an app card upward only when that app is frozen or malfunctioning; routinely closing every app does not generally improve battery life.

Swipe down from the top-right corner, near the battery, for Control Center. Swipe down from the top-left or upper center for Notification Center. Starting too low can scroll the current app instead of opening the panel.

4. Reach the top of the screen one-handed
Enable Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Reachability, then swipe down on the bottom edge. The upper half of the display moves within reach. Older guides that use Settings > General > Accessibility are outdated. Apple describes the feature in its accessibility documentation.
Hidden controls and safety actions
5. Assign an action to Back Tap
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap, then select Screenshot, Control Center, Reachability, Magnifier, or a Shortcut. Apple’s Back Tap guide lists the available actions. Cases, motion, and how you hold the phone can affect reliability, so use Double Tap for a low-risk action.
6. Take a screenshot
Press and release the Side button and Volume Up together. Tap the thumbnail at lower left to crop, annotate, share, or delete it. A Back Tap assignment is an alternative when you take screenshots frequently.

7. Capture a full webpage as a PDF
In Safari or another supported app, take a screenshot, tap its thumbnail, choose Full Page, then save or share the PDF. If Full Page is absent, that app does not support full-page capture.
8. Record the screen, with optional microphone audio
Open Control Center and tap Screen Recording. If the control is missing, add it using Control Center customization in Settings. Press and hold the recording control before starting to switch microphone audio on or off.
9. Temporarily disable Face ID
With the phone locked, press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the Emergency SOS and power controls appear. Cancel that screen. The next unlock requires your passcode; Face ID is not permanently disabled. Be careful, because holding the buttons can start an SOS countdown depending on your settings.

10. Force-restart a frozen iPhone
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
This is different from normal shutdown and is intended for an unresponsive screen or failed touch input.

11. Turn the keyboard into a trackpad
While typing, press and hold the Space bar until the keys go blank. Drag your finger to position the cursor precisely inside a word, message, email, or note.
12. Move multiple Home Screen icons at once
Press and hold an icon until the Home Screen enters edit mode. Keep holding the first icon, then tap additional icons with another finger. Drag the group to another page or folder. It takes practice, especially on the smaller iPhone 12, but is much faster than moving icons individually.

13. Scan documents into Notes
Open a note, tap its attachment or camera control, choose Scan Documents, frame the page, correct the corners if needed, and save. Poor lighting, glossy paper, and patterned backgrounds can confuse edge detection, so inspect the corners before accepting the scan.
14. Scan directly into Files
Open the Files app and enter the destination folder. Use the folder’s more-options menu and choose the document-scanning command when available. This saves the scan directly to Files instead of exporting it from Notes later.
15. Copy text from a photograph with Live Text
Open a photo containing readable text and press and hold the detected words. You can then select, copy, translate, look up, or share them. Recognition depends on focus, contrast, supported language, region, and iOS version; Live Text will not appear for every image.

Camera shortcuts
16. Start QuickTake and control exposure
- In Photo mode, press and hold the shutter to record QuickTake video.
- Drag the shutter toward the lock icon to continue recording without holding.
- Tap your subject to focus, then drag the exposure control up or down.
- Use either Volume button as a shutter control.
- Enable Settings > Camera > Grid and Level for straighter, more consistent compositions.
- In low light, use Night mode when its icon appears.
- Use Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings to keep selected camera preferences between sessions.
17. Use the iPhone 12 Pro’s extra camera controls
On iPhone 12 Pro, enable Apple ProRAW in Camera settings when you plan to edit exposure, white balance, highlights, or shadows. ProRAW preserves more editing information but creates substantially larger files, so it is not the best choice for every quick snapshot or share. The 12 Pro’s LiDAR scanner also enables certain depth and augmented-reality features that the standard iPhone 12 lacks; availability depends on the app and iOS version.
Bonus button reference
- Apple Pay: Double-click the Side button, then authenticate. Apple Pay requires a supported card, setup, and region.
- Siri: Press and hold the Side button, or use configured voice activation. Language and Siri settings matter.
- Emergency SOS: Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button. Do not test casually; the sequence can begin an emergency call or countdown.
- Power off: Hold the Side button and either Volume button, then drag the power slider.
- Accessibility Shortcut: Triple-click the Side button after configuring it in Accessibility settings.
- Spotlight search: Swipe down on the Home Screen and type an app, contact, setting, file, or calculation.
- Quick actions: Long-press many app icons for shortcuts such as New Message, Scan, or New Note. Available actions vary by app.
Make shortcuts do more with Shortcuts and Focus
A Back Tap can launch a Shortcut, but the Shortcut may request permissions or depend on a particular app, location access, or confirmation. Add shortcuts to the Home Screen, Lock Screen, Siri, or Back Tap for recurring tasks such as starting a work timer, opening a driving playlist, or sending a prewritten message.
Focus modes under Settings > Focus can silence notifications and show different Home Screens for work, sleep, driving, or personal time. Focus filters can change what appears inside supported apps. Text replacements under Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement expand abbreviations into frequently used phrases.

The iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max use the same general Face ID gesture system, but their dimensions and camera hardware differ. Do not assume a case, camera control, or accessory fits another model merely because the name is similar.
Troubleshooting
- Gestures fail: Start edge swipes at the actual edge, update iOS, and check that Reachability or Back Tap is enabled.
- Back Tap is inconsistent: Try a firmer double tap, remove a thick case for testing, or move the action to Triple Tap.
- Screenshot opens power controls: Release Side and Volume Up quickly; holding buttons invokes other controls.
- App switcher disappears: Swipe up and pause instead of flicking all the way to the top.
- Scan edges are wrong: Improve lighting, use a plain background, and drag each corner manually.
- Live Text or ProRAW is missing: Check iOS version, language, region, camera settings, and whether the feature is supported on that model or image.
Accessories that can help
None of these tricks requires an accessory. A MagSafe-compatible case can improve alignment with chargers, wallets, stands, and car mounts; a thick non-MagSafe case may weaken attachment. The iPhone 12 family uses a Lightning port, and the supplied cable is USB-C to Lightning, so you may need a compatible USB-C power adapter. A reputable Lightning cable, screen protector, or additional iCloud+ storage can also help with charging, protection, scans, photos, and backups.
