iPadOS 17 was publicly released on September 18, 2023. It originally supported iPad (6th generation and later), iPad mini (5th generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation and later), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation and later). The exact generation matters: for example, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and first-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro are not compatible.
As of Apple’s May 11, 2026 security-release listing, iPadOS 17.7.11 is listed for just three of those models: iPad (6th generation), 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation). iPadOS 17 is not the current major iPadOS release.
When was iPadOS 17 released?
Apple announced iPadOS 17 at WWDC on June 5, 2023, and made the developer beta available that day. Apple planned a public beta for July. The public release arrived on September 18, 2023 as a free update for compatible iPads. The announcement date and the public release date are different; September 18 is the date most people mean when asking when iPadOS 17 came out. Which iPads support iPadOS 17?
Apple’s launch-era compatibility list includes these models:

This is the list of devices originally eligible for iPadOS 17, not a promise that every one remains on the iPadOS 17 software branch today. Apple’s compatibility statement is available in its iPadOS 17 release notice.
Commonly confused models that are not compatible
- iPad (5th generation)
- iPad mini 4
- iPad Air 2
- iPad Pro 9.7-inch
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation)
Support starts with iPad (6th generation), iPad mini (5th generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, 11-inch iPad Pro (1st generation), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation). In particular, do not treat all 12.9-inch Pros as equivalent: the first generation is excluded, while the second is included. The 10.5-inch Pro is supported even though it does not belong to the 11-inch or 12.9-inch line.
How to check your iPad model and software
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Read Model Name and note the generation. The About screen also shows the installed software version.
Use the model name and generation rather than screen size or a vague family name. “iPad Pro 12.9-inch” alone is not enough, because the first generation is unsupported and the second generation is supported. Likewise, the iPad 5 is excluded while the iPad 6 is included. Apple’s iPad guide explains where to find device information and check for updates.

How to update a compatible iPad
Back up important data first, connect to Wi-Fi, and plug the iPad into power or ensure it has sufficient battery. Then go to Settings → General → Software Update and follow the available on-screen instructions. The update screen reports the newest software offered for that particular device; it may offer a later iPadOS version rather than iPadOS 17.
If an expected update does not appear, check that the exact model is eligible and that the iPad is not already on its newest available version. Also check free storage, Wi-Fi connectivity, and power. A school- or work-managed iPad may have updates restricted by its administrator. These are practical diagnostic checks, not a guarantee that every update will appear at a particular time.
Is iPadOS 17 still current or receiving updates?
No: iPadOS 17 is an older major release. Apple’s security-release page lists iPadOS 26.5 as the latest major iPadOS release in the researched 2026 snapshot. It also lists iPadOS 17.7.11, released May 11, 2026, for iPad (6th generation), 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation). That listing identifies a security-update branch for those three devices; it does not mean all iPadOS 17-compatible iPads are still receiving iPadOS 17 updates, nor that 17.7.11 is the latest iPadOS overall. Compatibility means a device can install the operating system, not that every iPadOS 17 feature works on it. Apple notes that feature availability can vary by device, region, and language. Consult Apple’s iPadOS 17 update information for feature qualifications.
What if your iPad is not compatible?
An excluded model cannot install iPadOS 17 through the normal Software Update process. Check for the latest iPadOS version Apple offers for that iPad and install any available security updates. Then consider whether your essential apps still support its software. If app compatibility or security is a concern, a newer device may be sensible; compare the model’s support for newer iPadOS versions, not just its ability to run iPadOS 17. Avoid unofficial installation methods as a routine workaround: they are outside Apple’s supported update path and can create security, reliability, support, and data-loss risks.
For an older but compatible iPad, OS eligibility alone does not make it a good long-term purchase. Consider battery condition, storage, performance in the apps you actually use, current security updates, and the accessories you need. When buying second-hand, verify the exact generation, Activation Lock status, battery and screen condition, storage, and Wi-Fi or cellular configuration. Ask to see the iPad erased and activated before buying if possible. A model that only reaches an older software generation may be poor value unless its price and your needs justify that limit.

What changed in iPadOS 17?
Notable additions included a customizable Lock Screen, interactive widgets, the Health app on iPad, improved PDF autofill and Notes tools, updated Messages stickers, FaceTime audio and video messages, Safari Profiles, Freeform improvements, keyboard and autocorrect changes, and more flexible Stage Manager behavior. Feature availability can differ across devices, regions, and languages, so the compatibility list should not be read as a guarantee of identical features on every model.

It may already have the newest version available for that model, lack free storage or a reliable connection, or be subject to a school or workplace update restriction. Confirm the model in Settings → General → About and check Settings → General → Software Update.
