No—Apple’s 11-inch iPad does not use the A17 Pro. Apple identifies the 11-inch model as an A16 iPad. The iPad with an A17 Pro chip is the iPad mini (A17 Pro). That distinction determines Apple Intelligence compatibility.
Which iPad has which chip?
Apple’s product specifications separate these models:
| Model | Chip | Apple Intelligence eligibility | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11-inch iPad | A16 | Not included in Apple’s current iPadOS 27-or-later compatibility list | Larger screen for general tablet use, schoolwork and media |
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) | A17 Pro | Listed by Apple, subject to software, language and region availability | Compact, high-performance tablet with Apple Intelligence support |
| iPad models with M1 or later | Apple silicon M-series | Listed by Apple for Apple Intelligence on iPadOS 27 or later | Users who need larger displays or higher-end iPad hardware |
So, a listing or search result that combines “11-inch iPad” and “A17 Pro” is mixing two different products. Search for iPad mini A17 Pro when the chip or Apple Intelligence is the priority.

Operating-system version
The guidance applies to devices running iPadOS 27 or later. Compatibility can therefore change with future software revisions, and an eligible chip alone does not guarantee access on an older iPadOS release.
Language and region
Apple says Apple Intelligence is not available in all languages or regions. Check the availability for the language used on the iPad and the country or region associated with the device before buying on the assumption that every feature will work.

How to choose between the 11-inch iPad and iPad mini
Choose the 11-inch A16 iPad when screen area matters more than Apple Intelligence
- You want the larger 11-inch form factor.
- You do not need Apple Intelligence on this purchase.
- Your priority is everyday tablet use rather than the A17 Pro specification.
Choose the iPad mini (A17 Pro) when Apple Intelligence or portability is central
- You specifically need the A17 Pro model identified by Apple.
- You want the compact iPad mini form factor.
- You have confirmed that iPadOS 27 or later and your language and region support the features you need.
Consider an M1-or-newer iPad for a larger Apple Intelligence device
Apple’s compatibility guidance also includes iPad models with M1 or later. This is the relevant route if you want Apple Intelligence without choosing the mini’s smaller form factor.
Apple Pencil compatibility for the iPad mini (A17 Pro)
Apple lists both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible with iPad mini (A17 Pro). Confirm the exact iPad model before purchasing an accessory; compatibility should not be inferred from a case, listing title or a generic “iPad mini” description.

Why older Apple Intelligence announcements can be confusing
In its October 2024 Newsroom announcement, Apple said the first Apple Intelligence features would be available in U.S. English through a free iPadOS 18.1 update and on iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later. “This month” referred to that 2024 announcement period, not a permanent statement of present availability. For a current purchase decision, use Apple’s latest iPadOS compatibility guidance, including its language and region limits.

There is no single Apple model that is both the 11-inch A16 iPad and an A17 Pro iPad. Buy the 11-inch A16 iPad for its larger form factor, or buy the iPad mini (A17 Pro) when you need the A17 Pro and Apple’s listed Apple Intelligence eligibility. Verify iPadOS 27 or later and local language and region support before relying on those features.
