The iPad (10th generation) was announced and opened for orders on October 18, 2022, then reached customers and stores on October 26, 2022. It launched at $449 for 64GB Wi‑Fi, with a redesigned 10.9-inch-class body, A14 Bionic chip, USB-C, and a landscape 12MP front camera. In August 2026 it is mainly a refurbished or discounted purchase competing with the newer iPad (A16).

Original U.S. pricing
Apple launched the 10th generation at $449 for Wi‑Fi and $599 for Wi‑Fi + Cellular. Each connectivity type came in 64GB and 256GB capacities; the figures above are the starting prices, not the price of every storage tier. U.S. advertised prices generally exclude sales tax, and other countries use different currencies and taxes.

These were listings on Apple’s U.S. refurbished store when checked, not permanent prices: Apple refurbished iPad store. Inventory, condition, tax and configuration can change. The same page showed refurbished iPad (A16) examples including 128GB Wi‑Fi at $379 and 256GB Wi‑Fi at $459, making the price gap more important than the old $449 launch MSRP.

Design and display
This was a major redesign of the standard iPad rather than an iPad Air or iPad Pro. The Home button disappeared, bezels became more uniform, edges became flat and Touch ID moved to the top button. Apple markets the panel as a 10.9-inch display; its technical measurement is 10.86 inches diagonally when treated as a rectangle. True Tone, 264ppi resolution and 500-nit brightness suit reading, schoolwork, streaming and general apps.
The front camera sits on the landscape edge. That placement is more natural when the tablet is horizontal for video calls, classes or meetings. The rear 12MP camera is useful for document scans, reference images and 4K recording rather than replacing a dedicated camera.

Performance, software and USB-C
A14 Bionic remains capable for browsing, email, streaming, note-taking, drawing, school applications and many games. It is not an M-series machine, so demanding professional video work and other sustained creative workloads have less headroom than on an iPad Air or Pro. Apple confirms the processor architecture but does not list RAM on the cited specification page.
The tablet shipped with iPadOS 16. In 2026, check Apple’s current compatibility and feature lists before buying: operating-system eligibility does not guarantee every multitasking, external-display or AI feature on an A14 model.
USB-C replaces Lightning and handles charging and DisplayPort output, but data is limited to USB 2.0 speeds up to 480Mb/s. One external display can run up to 4K at 30Hz or 1080p at 60Hz; HDMI, VGA and DVI require adapters. USB-C here is convenient, not Thunderbolt-class expansion.

Apple Pencil and keyboard compatibility
Apple Pencil
- Apple Pencil (USB-C) works directly and is the simpler pairing for this iPad.
- Apple Pencil (1st generation) is supported, but pairing and charging require a USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter because the stylus uses Lightning.
Do not assume Pencil models have identical features. Include the stylus and any adapter in the total cost if handwriting or drawing is the reason for buying.

Keyboard accessories
The iPad supports the two-piece Magic Keyboard Folio with trackpad and function-key row. Apple announced a U.S. launch price of $249; the Smart Folio launched at $79. At those prices, a keyboard can erase much of the tablet’s apparent savings, so compare the complete bundle with a newer iPad or laptop-class alternative. Cases are generation-specific: a ninth-generation case should not be assumed to fit this redesigned body.
Wi‑Fi or Wi‑Fi + Cellular?
Choose Wi‑Fi when
- You mainly use home, school or office networks.
- You can use an iPhone hotspot occasionally.
- You want the lower purchase price and no monthly tablet data plan.
Choose cellular when
- You need internet away from Wi‑Fi without tethering.
- You accept a separate carrier plan and its coverage cost.
- You need the cellular model’s GPS/GNSS capability.
Cellular is not simply faster Wi‑Fi. 5G support, eSIM/SIM details and carrier compatibility depend on the exact model and market; confirm them with the carrier before purchase.

Is 64GB enough?
64GB
It can work for streaming, web browsing, email, cloud documents, light schoolwork and a modest app library. iPadOS and apps use part of the advertised capacity, and there is no microSD slot. Large games, offline video, photo libraries and creative projects can fill it quickly.
256GB
The larger tier is safer for long ownership, children sharing one tablet, offline media, drawing applications and substantial photos or documents. Compare its price with the newer iPad (A16) before choosing it: a refurbished 10th-generation 256GB unit can overlap with A16 pricing.

It makes sense when
- A refurbished or clearance unit is substantially cheaper than an iPad (A16).
- Your use is browsing, streaming, schoolwork, video calls, notes and ordinary games.
- You value USB-C, the landscape camera or the blue, pink, yellow and silver finishes.
- You already own compatible accessories and understand the Pencil adapter issue.
Choose the iPad (A16) instead when
- The price difference is modest, especially at 256GB.
- You want more performance headroom and a stronger long-term value for a new purchase.
- You are buying for several years and do not need the 10th generation’s specific colors or accessories.
Consider an iPad Air for demanding creative apps and a larger performance margin, or an iPad mini when portability matters more than a broad work surface. A ninth-generation iPad is worth considering only at a very low price or when you specifically need its Home button and Lightning accessories.

Bottom-line buying guidance
Buy the 10th generation refurbished when the discount is clear and your needs are ordinary tablet tasks. Treat 64GB as a budget choice and price the Pencil, keyboard, case and cellular plan as part of the setup. If a 256GB 10th-generation listing approaches the price of an iPad (A16), the newer model is usually the more sensible long-term purchase.
