Apple released the stable version of iOS 26 in the U.S. on September 15, 2025. It is already available to compatible iPhones; the oldest supported models are the iPhone 11 family and the iPhone SE (2nd generation). The iPhone XR, XS, X, iPhone 8 and older models are not eligible. Apple announced the public release, and its compatibility list identifies supported models.
Which iPhones can install iOS 26?
Apple’s compatibility list includes the following iPhone families. “iPhone 11” includes the Pro and Pro Max variants, not just the base model.

Apple’s list effectively starts with A13 Bionic-class hardware, represented by iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation); Apple presents the eligibility by model rather than stating a processor cutoff.
Which older iPhones are not eligible?
These models are not on Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list:

These phones cannot be moved to iOS 26 through Apple’s normal update process. Apple’s security release history shows updates for older iOS branches after iOS 26 launched, but availability depends on the device and release. Apple does not promise a fixed support period for every model.
When did iOS 26 come out in the U.S.?
Apple previewed iOS 26 on June 9, 2025, then made the stable release available as a free software update on September 15, 2025. There was no separate later release date for older iPhones that Apple lists as compatible. Individual devices may not show an update because of their settings or circumstances, but that is different from a delayed model-specific launch.

Apple’s release information confirms the September 15 date. Apple has since issued iOS 26 point updates; check Software Update or the security release page for the version currently offered to your model rather than relying on an older version number.
How to check for and install the update
Before updating, back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer, connect to Wi-Fi, plug the phone into power or ensure it has sufficient battery, and check that you have enough free storage. Apple recommends making a backup before an update.

- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Review the installed version and any update offered for your iPhone.
- If iOS 26 or a later iOS 26 update is offered, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple’s iPhone update instructions also cover automatic updates and computer-based updates. After installation, update apps if any behave unexpectedly.
Use a Mac or PC if an over-the-air update fails
Connect the iPhone to the computer with a cable. Use Finder on macOS 10.15 or later; use iTunes on macOS 10.14 or earlier, or on Windows. Select the iPhone, choose Check for Update, then choose Update if one is available. A computer cannot make an unsupported iPhone compatible; avoid unofficial firmware or modified-system tools as a workaround.

Why might iOS 26 not appear?
First distinguish an eligibility issue from an update or installation problem. If the phone is an XR, XS, X, iPhone 8 or older, restarting or clearing storage will not make it eligible. For a supported model, check these common causes:

- Employer or school management: A management profile or supervision policy can delay or block updates. Contact the organization’s administrator.
- Storage: Insufficient free space can prevent downloading or installing. Remove or offload content you no longer need, then try again.
- Network: Switch from weak, public or captive-portal Wi-Fi to a reliable private network.
- Power or battery: Connect the iPhone to power and retry.
- Beta software: Check whether the phone is enrolled in a beta update channel and review its beta-update settings.
- Temporary service or regional issue: Retry later if the device is eligible and Apple’s update service is temporarily unavailable.
If Software Update says it is unable to check, confirm the model, restart the phone, connect to dependable Wi-Fi and power, free storage if needed, and try again. If that fails, check through Finder or iTunes. Persistent errors may require Apple Support, especially on a supervised or recently restored device. Apple’s release was broadly available on September 15, 2025; a missing update alone is not evidence that Apple assigned older compatible models a later launch date.

Does every iOS 26-compatible iPhone get Apple Intelligence?
No. Operating-system compatibility and feature compatibility are separate. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement identifies Apple Intelligence support on all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max—not on every iPhone that can install iOS 26. What should you do with an iPhone that cannot upgrade?
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest update Apple offers for that model. An unsupported iPhone does not become immediately unsafe solely because a new major version launched, but its future update coverage is not guaranteed. Apple’s release history documents updates for some older iOS branches without establishing a universal number of years of support.
You can continue using the phone if it meets your needs. Consider replacing it if you need iOS 26-only capabilities, current app support, Apple Intelligence, better battery life or a longer runway for security and software updates. An upgrade is not necessary just to install iOS 26 if you already own a supported iPhone.
