iOS 26 Developer Beta 6 was a refinement release, not a major feature drop. Apple released it on August 11, 2025, one week after Developer Beta 5, with updates to the Liquid Glass interface, app animations, ringtones, Camera behavior, onboarding, and the Preview app. This article covers that August developer release—not the later Public Beta 6 milestone released in September 2025.

What’s new in iOS 26 Developer Beta 6?
New ringtone options
Beta 6 added six variants of the Reflection ringtone: Buoyant, Dreamer, Tech, Pop, Reflected, and Surge. It also introduced a new ringtone called Little Bird.
These additions give users more customization, but they do not change how the iPhone works.

Liquid Glass interaction refinements
Control toggles received a more obvious Liquid Glass effect when tapped. Apple also adjusted translucency across the Lock Screen and navigation bars.
The Lock Screen clock became more transparent while retaining a frosted-glass appearance, and passcode buttons gained a more translucent look. Navigation bars were tuned differently depending on context: some elements became more transparent, while others became more opaque to keep text readable over busy backgrounds.
The exact appearance can vary with the wallpaper, app background, accessibility settings, and display conditions, so these changes should be understood as visual refinements rather than a universal measurable improvement.

Faster app animations
Opening and closing apps became visually faster, with a slight bounce that matches other motion effects in iOS 26.

This may make the phone feel more responsive, but it does not prove that apps launch faster, the processor is performing better, or battery life has improved. Animation duration and actual loading time are separate things.
Camera Classic Mode removed
Apple removed the Camera app’s Classic Mode toggle in this beta. Classic Mode became the default behavior, leaving no visible setting to switch back to the earlier-beta animation.
The toggle had first appeared in Beta 5 and controlled the direction and behavior of scrolling between camera modes. Its removal is more significant than a purely cosmetic change because it takes away a user-facing choice. However, beta behavior can still change before a final release; this does not establish that the control was permanently removed from iOS.

Beta 6 added an introductory video explaining the Liquid Glass redesign after the update. Its likely purpose is to help users understand a substantial visual change to the system interface. The exact circumstances in which the video appears may vary by device and setup.

Preview gets larger, repositioned controls
The iPhone Preview app received a practical interface update:
- Buttons for creating a new document are larger.
- Document-scanning controls are larger or more prominent.
- Scanning controls moved from the top of the screen to the bottom.
This is one of Beta 6’s more useful changes because it affects a common task directly, rather than simply changing Liquid Glass styling.
What Beta 6 did not add
There was no major new system feature in the available Beta 6 change coverage comparable to the introduction of Liquid Glass, Live Translation, Apple Music AutoMix, the Games app, or the broader iOS 26 redesign.
Those features belong to the wider iOS 26 release cycle. They should not be presented as features newly introduced by Beta 6. The same distinction applies to Apple Intelligence: iOS 26 included Apple Intelligence-related functionality, but Beta 6 did not bring a clearly identified major Apple Intelligence feature specific to this build.

Developer Beta 6 versus Public Beta 6
The name “Beta 6” does not identify one universal build:
- Developer Beta 6: released August 11, 2025, initially with build 23A5318c.
- Updated Developer Beta 6: released August 14, 2025, with build 23A5318f.
- Public Beta 6: released later, on September 2, 2025, and associated with a later developer build rather than necessarily the same software released on August 11.
For that reason, screenshots or reports labeled simply “iOS 26 Beta 6” may describe different builds. Apple’s developer release archive provides the broader release context. The August 14 build change was also reported by 9to5Mac.
Which iPhones support the iOS 26 beta?
The reported iOS 26 compatibility list included:
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 15 series
- iPhone 16 series
- iPhone 16e
- iPhone SE (second generation and later)
Base operating-system compatibility does not guarantee access to every feature. Apple Intelligence requirements are stricter, with some capabilities limited to newer hardware such as the iPhone 15 Pro line and iPhone 16 models. Should you install iOS 26 Beta 6?
Install it if you are a developer
Developer Beta 6 is useful if you need to test an app against the Liquid Glass interface, altered navigation behavior, updated system animations, and other iOS 26 changes. Developers should expect bugs and report reproducible problems through Feedback Assistant.

It is reasonable on a secondary iPhone
Experienced beta testers who have a spare compatible iPhone may find Beta 6 worthwhile for early access to the redesigned interface. A secondary device limits the consequences of broken apps, unstable services, or poor battery behavior.
Most people should wait on a primary iPhone
There was no compelling Beta 6-only feature that justified accepting preview-software risk on the phone you depend on every day. Waiting was the safer choice if the iPhone handled banking, work, medical, transit, authentication, or enterprise apps—or if dependable battery life mattered more than early access.
How to install the developer beta
On an iPhone running iOS 16.4 or later:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Choose the available developer beta option.
- Return to the Software Update screen and install the update when it appears.
The iPhone must be signed in with the Apple Account associated with the Apple Developer website for developer-beta access. Developers can use Apple’s Developer program.
How to install the public beta
- Enroll through the Apple Beta Software Program.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Select the iOS 26 public-beta option.
- Tap Download and Install.
Back up before installing
Before moving to beta software, create an archived backup. An encrypted local backup made with Finder on a Mac is the safest option when you may need to preserve information such as Health and Keychain-related data.
- Prefer a secondary iPhone.
- Archive the backup made before installing the beta.
- Keep the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi during installation.
- Make sure there is enough free storage.
- Do not assume an iCloud backup created after installing the beta will restore cleanly to an earlier public iOS release.
If the beta causes problems
- Install the newest available beta build if Apple has superseded the one you installed.
- Report reproducible bugs through Feedback Assistant.
- If you return to a public iOS release, expect the iPhone to be erased during the downgrade.
- Restore using the archived pre-beta backup.
Not every app, backup, or Apple service is guaranteed to behave normally during a beta cycle.
Verdict
iOS 26 Developer Beta 6 made Apple’s redesign look and feel more finished, especially through Liquid Glass adjustments, quicker-looking animations, and more usable Preview controls. But it remained primarily a polish update. For developers and enthusiasts with a spare iPhone, it was a sensible testing release; for most everyday users, it was not worth installing on a primary device solely for its new features.
