Apple released iOS 26.1 developer beta 2 on October 6, 2025, followed by public beta 2 on October 7. The reported developer build was 23B5059e, replacing beta 1 build 23B5044l. This was test software, not a stable release: Apple shipped the finished iOS 26.1 as build 23B85 on November 3, 2025. In 2026, iOS 26.1 beta 2 is therefore historical; install a currently supported release instead of searching for this build.

There was no documented US-only build. US users received the same core release channel as other regions, subject to the usual hardware, language, account and regional feature limits.
Apple’s initial beta announcement appeared on September 22, 2025. The developer and public versions belonged to the same 26.1 testing cycle but required different enrollment routes.
What changed in iOS 26.1 beta 2?
Beta 2 was mainly a refinement release. The most visible changes were reported by testers and specialist coverage; Apple’s official 26.1 notes focus largely on SDK behavior, fixes and known issues rather than a complete consumer changelog.

Alarms and timers use “Slide to stop”
Alarms and timers changed from a simple stop button to a swipe gesture. The larger controls introduced with iOS 26 made accidental taps easier, so the gesture adds deliberate confirmation when stopping an alarm. Snoozing remains a separate action. This is a small usability change, but it matters if your iPhone is your wake-up alarm.
External microphone controls
Beta 2 added controls for compatible external microphones, including input-gain adjustment and a choice of where locally captured recordings are saved. These options are useful for podcasters, journalists, musicians and video creators using USB-C or other supported audio hardware. The controls shown depend on the microphone, connection method and recording app; they are not guaranteed for every accessory.
Interface alignment and Vision Pro artwork
- App-folder titles were reported as left aligned.
- Several Settings headings were left aligned.
- The Apple Vision Pro app gained a 3D representation of the headset.
These are incremental Liquid Glass-era visual adjustments rather than a new system-wide capability.

Beta software is not a fixed preview. In beta 2, Calendar events no longer used beta 1’s full-width color treatment, and the iPadOS Safari Downloads menu moved back toward the address-bar area. A feature visible in an earlier beta was therefore not a promise about the final release.

iPadOS 26.1 beta 2: Slide Over returns
One of the most discussed beta 2 changes was on iPad, not iPhone. Apple brought back a limited Slide Over mode after removing it in the iPadOS 26 multitasking redesign.
- Only one app could occupy Slide Over at a time, rather than the older stack of multiple Slide Over apps.
- The floating app could be resized.
- Split View was not simply restored; iPadOS’s newer windowing system remained the broader multitasking model.
Slide Over is an iPadOS feature. It did not return to iOS on iPhone. The change illustrates how Apple adjusted the redesign in response to tester feedback.
Apple Intelligence and other 26.1 changes
Contemporaneous reporting described iOS 26.1 as expanding Apple Intelligence to additional languages and regions, but beta 2 reports do not establish that every capability was available to every US user. Availability can depend on the iPhone model, language and Siri settings, region, Apple Account configuration and rollout timing. Installing beta 2 did not automatically unlock every Apple Intelligence feature.

Who could install the beta?
Developer beta
The developer channel was intended for app and API testing. On an enrolled device, the typical path was:
- Sign in with the Apple Account associated with your developer access.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Tap Beta Updates.
- Choose the developer beta channel.
- Return to Software Update and install the offered update.
Apple has changed beta-enrollment labels between iOS versions, so follow the labels displayed on the particular device.
Public beta
General testers needed to enroll at the Apple Beta Software Program and use the same Apple Account on the iPhone. The installation path was Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, then select the public beta channel. Public beta distribution does not make the software stable or risk-free.
Should you have installed it?
Good reasons to install
- You develop or QA-test iPhone or iPad apps.
- You specifically need to test the alarm gesture or external-audio controls.
- You have a secondary device and can report bugs or restore it.
- You need early behavior testing against the 26.1 SDK.
Reasons to wait
- The iPhone is your only work, travel or emergency device.
- You depend on banking, medical, transit, enterprise, CarPlay or accessory apps.
- You cannot tolerate possible battery, cellular, Bluetooth, camera or compatibility regressions.
- You do not have a recent backup.
A public beta is still pre-release software. Anecdotal reports of smoother behavior or better battery life are not controlled evidence and should not determine a safety decision.

Prepare before installing
- Create an encrypted local backup or confirm that an up-to-date iCloud backup completed.
- Keep sufficient free storage and charge the iPhone.
- Do not make the beta device your only method for two-factor authentication, work access, travel or emergency communication.
- Check compatibility with banking, health, transportation, enterprise, vehicle and accessory software.
- Keep your Apple Account password and device passcode available.
- Consider Apple Watch pairing: mismatched iPhone and watch software generations can create compatibility problems. Apple did not establish a specific watchOS requirement for beta 2 in the cited material.
For developers: SDK and TestFlight implications
Installing the operating-system beta was only one part of the workflow. App Store Connect documentation says that on October 6, 2025, developers could upload apps built with Xcode 26.1 beta 2 and the matching 26.1 beta 2 SDK for internal and external TestFlight testing. Apple’s 26.1 documentation covers HealthKit additions, Nearby Interaction UWB parameters, Siri issues and workarounds involving Portuguese voices, SwiftUI fixes and known issues, UIKit annotation changes that could produce new warnings or errors, AirDrop share-sheet fixes, Background Assets URL fixes and a WebKit crash-stacktrace condition that can be ignored under a specified navigation-policy scenario. Treat beta OS behavior as a possible platform regression before blaming application code.

Beta Updates does not appear
- Verify the Apple Account under Settings and confirm it is enrolled in the intended program.
- Check that Beta Updates is not set to Off.
- Restart the iPhone and revisit Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates.
- Check whether employer or school management blocks beta software, or whether the device is already on another beta channel.
- Do not install configuration profiles from unofficial websites.
The download fails or stalls
- Connect the iPhone to power and reliable Wi-Fi.
- Free additional storage.
- Restart and retry the update.
- If the device will not start normally, use Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows to update or restore it.
Apple’s iOS 26 release notes describe computer-assisted recovery for certain post-update startup failures. That guidance is background recovery information, not a beta 2-specific incident report.

Downgrading to stable software
Turning off beta updates stops future beta downloads; it does not downgrade the installed system. Returning to a stable release generally requires erasing and restoring the iPhone. A backup made on a newer beta may not restore to an older stable version, so preserve a compatible pre-beta backup before installing.

What happened after beta 2?
Apple released the finished iOS 26.1 on November 3, 2025, as build 23B85, as recorded in its release archive. Later 2026 listings show the platform moving on to iOS 27 beta development; beta 2 is not a current installation target. For software today, use the stable version offered in Software Update or the currently supported beta channel.
