Short answer: iOS 18’s Hide and Require Face ID feature is effective against casual snooping, but it is not an anonymity tool. The app disappears from the Home Screen and ordinary App Library listings, and Apple suppresses its content from several everyday surfaces. However, the app’s name can still appear in Screen Time, Battery Usage, and App Store purchase history. The Hidden folder is also visible, the setting is device-specific, and anyone who can authenticate your iPhone may be able to open it.
Apple describes locked and hidden apps in its iPhone User Guide and introduced the feature with iOS 18.
Locking and hiding are different
Both options require Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode. The difference is visibility:

Hiding is therefore best understood as locking plus removal from ordinary view, not as a separate, stronger password system.

What hiding protects
A hidden app is difficult to stumble across when someone borrows your unlocked phone. Its icon is no longer on the Home Screen, it is not shown in normal App Library categories, and Apple says information from locked or hidden apps is kept out of standard Search results, Siri suggestions, notification previews, CarPlay, and call history. That can prevent a private message preview or app suggestion from appearing at the wrong moment.
There is a usability trade-off: suppressing those surfaces can also hide alerts you genuinely need. Notification behavior can vary with the app, Focus settings, Apple Watch configuration, and other connected devices, so do not treat this as a guarantee that an alert is stopped everywhere.
What can still reveal a hidden app

- Settings → Screen Time
- Settings → Battery → Battery Usage By App
- App Store purchase history
These records may reveal that the app exists or has been used, even though they do not necessarily expose its messages or in-app content. Battery Usage can sometimes also suggest recent activity, depending on usage and the iOS release.
The Hidden folder itself remains visible at the bottom of App Library. Its contents require authentication, but the folder can indicate that hidden apps have been configured. In Settings, authenticated users can also find the hidden-app list under Settings → Apps → Hidden Apps.
This creates four different privacy questions:
- Content secrecy: strong against casual viewing.
- Existence secrecy: weaker because the Hidden folder and system records may draw attention.
- Identity secrecy: limited because the app name remains visible in specified records.
- Account secrecy: not provided; purchases, subscriptions, cloud accounts, and service records remain separate.
How to hide an app
- Touch and hold the app icon on the Home Screen.
- Tap Require Face ID (or Require Touch ID or Require Passcode).
- Choose Hide and Require Face ID (or the equivalent Touch ID/passcode option).
- Authenticate, then tap Hide App.
The app moves to the Hidden folder in App Library. Apple’s feature is intended for apps downloaded separately from the App Store. Built-in apps generally cannot be hidden, and Apple lists examples including Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Find My, Maps, Shortcuts, and Settings. In the European Union, a user-selected default browser or app marketplace also cannot be hidden under the documented exceptions. How to find and open it
- Swipe left past every Home Screen page to open App Library.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Hidden.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or the passcode.
- Tap the app. Authenticate again if prompted.
The app not appearing in Spotlight is expected; hiding it removes it from ordinary Search surfaces.

How to unhide it
- Open App Library and tap Hidden.
- Authenticate.
- Touch and hold the app.
- Tap Don’t Require Face ID (or the Touch ID/passcode equivalent), then authenticate again.
The app leaves Hidden and appears near the top of App Library.
When locking is better than hiding
To protect an app without making it harder for you to locate, touch and hold its icon, choose Require Face ID, Require Touch ID, or Require Passcode, and authenticate. Apple says a locked app relocks after you quit it.

Locking is often the better choice for banking, authentication, health, or medical apps that you open frequently, or when you still want to notice incoming activity. It protects access while avoiding the conspicuous Hidden folder and the inconvenience of hunting through App Library.

The passcode remains the fallback
Face ID and Touch ID are not independent secrets. Someone who knows your device passcode may be able to authenticate into Hidden, open the app, unhide it, and inspect related settings. Use a passcode you do not share, review enrolled biometrics when circumstances change, and consider broader controls such as Stolen Device Protection separately.
Hiding does not erase data
The feature changes local visibility and access. It does not delete an app’s cloud account, messages, transactions, subscription, server-side records, or App Store history. Deleting the app is a different action and still does not automatically erase those records.

It does not sync through iCloud
Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide says the locked or hidden status applies only to the device where it is set and does not sync with iCloud. A second iPhone or iPad therefore should not be assumed to inherit the same state.
Family and managed devices can expose or disable it
Apple says children under 13 in a Family Sharing group cannot lock or hide apps. Users aged 13–17 may be able to, but a parent or guardian can still see download information, usage time, and impose Screen Time restrictions; age rules vary by country or region.
On supervised company, school, or institutional devices, administrators can disable hiding or locking with the iOS 18-and-later device-management restrictions allowAppsToBeHidden and allowAppsToBeLocked. If the option is missing, management policy is one possible explanation.
Troubleshooting
- No “Require Face ID” option: confirm an authentication method is configured, the app is eligible, and the phone is not restricted by device management.
- No Hidden folder: open App Library by swiping left through all Home Screen pages; the folder appears at the bottom after an app has been hidden.
- The app is still in a Settings list: that is expected. Hiding does not remove its name from Screen Time, Battery Usage, or purchase history.
- Notifications stopped: review the app’s notification, Focus, and connected-device settings. Hiding is designed to keep app information off specified notification surfaces.
- You cannot find the app: check App Library’s Hidden folder rather than Spotlight. If it is not there, it may have been deleted, removed by management, or never hidden.
Bottom line
Use Hidden for protection against casual access, accidental notification exposure, and someone browsing your Home Screen. Do not use it to conceal an app from a determined person with your passcode, access to Screen Time, Battery Usage, App Store history, Family Sharing controls, or a managed-device account. If your goal is simply to block opening while keeping the app convenient, lock it instead. If your goal is to erase account or cloud traces, hiding is the wrong tool.
