Yes—iOS 18 introduced RCS messaging on iPhone, but installing iOS 18 was not enough. Apple provided the software support; your carrier had to support and provision RCS for iPhone on your region, line and plan. When available, RCS made green-bubble chats with Android users richer than SMS or MMS. When unavailable, Messages continued using SMS/MMS.
What iOS 18 actually added
RCS (Rich Communication Services) arrived in Apple’s Messages app as a richer fallback for people who are not using iMessage. Apple describes it as a carrier-provided service available on select carriers, with availability varying by country and plan (Apple support; iOS 18 release notes).
On a supported conversation, RCS can provide:
- Higher-resolution photos and videos than traditional MMS
- Delivery and read receipts
- Typing indicators
- Richer link sharing and improved group-message behavior
The bubbles remain green. RCS does not turn an Android conversation into iMessage, add blue bubbles, or reproduce every iMessage feature.
Why the carrier mattered
RCS on iPhone required three separate pieces to line up:

- iOS support: The iPhone had to run iOS 18 or later.
- Carrier support: The network had to offer RCS specifically for iPhone and provision the line.
- Recipient and plan support: The other person had to be reachable through an RCS-capable service, and your exact plan, region and carrier configuration had to qualify.
That is why “iOS 18 gives every iPhone RCS” was incorrect. An MVNO or sub-brand can have different support from its parent network, and two lines on the same broad carrier brand may not behave identically.
How to check and enable RCS
On current iOS 18 releases, use:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Tap RCS Messaging.
- Turn on RCS Messaging.
Apple warns that activation can be delayed and that carrier or cellular-data charges may apply under your plan. Early 2024 beta builds used different menu presentation, so screenshots from the first beta may not match the current path.

If RCS Messaging is missing, Apple says the feature may not be available for your carrier, region or plan. Confirm that the phone is on iOS 18 or later, that the line has an active texting or cellular-data plan, and that your provider lists RCS support for iPhone. After a carrier change or update, a restart or toggling RCS off and on can be a practical troubleshooting step. If registration remains stuck, contact the carrier.

How to tell whether a message is RCS
- Blue bubble: iMessage.
- Green conversation identified as RCS: RCS is being used.
- Green conversation without RCS: SMS or MMS (or a fallback after RCS registration failed).
Green alone does not prove that RCS is active. Apple’s release notes document cases in which an RCS conversation could downgrade to SMS.

Eligible iPhones and rollout history
Apple’s iOS 18 compatibility range started at iPhone XS and later (Apple’s iOS 18 announcement). That established software eligibility, not guaranteed RCS service.
- November 2023: Apple announced that RCS would come to iPhone.
- June 2024: Early iOS 18 betas exposed the RCS option to some testers, while carrier rollout was incomplete (MacRumors; 9to5Mac).
- September 16, 2024: iOS 18 launched publicly with availability limited by market and carrier (Apple).
- iOS 18.1: Added RCS Business Messaging where supported (Apple support).
Support expanded over time, but there was never a single permanent worldwide carrier list. Check the exact provider, plan, SIM/eSIM line and country rather than relying on an old 2024 list. Availability can also change while roaming or after switching SIMs.

RCS versus SMS/MMS and iMessage

Limitations and edge cases
RCS improved basic cross-platform texting, but it did not replace iMessage. It remained carrier-dependent, could fall back to SMS/MMS, and was not end-to-end encrypted in the original iOS 18 implementation (Apple’s messaging comparison).
Mixed groups containing iMessage and RCS participants could still have inconsistent reactions, attachments, replies or participant changes. Apple documented a known mixed-group attachment-reply issue in the iOS 18 release notes. Dual-SIM users should check the line actually selected for Messages, not merely another line on the phone.

Do not confuse standard iOS 18 RCS with the separate end-to-end encrypted RCS beta Apple documented for iOS 26.5 (Apple support). They are different implementations and time periods.
What to do when RCS does not work
- Install iOS 18 or a later compatible release.
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages and check whether RCS Messaging appears.
- Verify your exact carrier, MVNO/sub-brand, country and plan support RCS on iPhone.
- Make sure the line has active texting or cellular-data service.
- Wait for activation, then test with an Android contact whose service supports RCS.
- If the setting is absent or messages keep reverting to SMS/MMS, ask the carrier to verify provisioning.
Changing phones alone will not solve a carrier-provisioning problem. Likewise, a carrier that supports RCS on Android does not automatically support RCS on iPhone.

Did every iPhone on iOS 18 get RCS?
No. iOS 18-compatible hardware was required, but RCS also depended on a carrier that supported and provisioned RCS for iPhone in the user’s region and plan.

Was iOS 18 RCS end-to-end encrypted?
No. Apple’s comparison documentation says the original iOS 18 RCS implementation was not end-to-end encrypted.
