You can download iOS 17 wallpapers from reputable third-party archives and set them through the iPhone’s Wallpaper settings. Apple does not offer a single public gallery for downloading every past iOS wallpaper, and not every image released with iPhone 15 is an iOS 17 system wallpaper. The distinction matters if you want the original background, rather than a related device-marketing image or an upscaled copy.
What counts as an iOS 17 wallpaper?
The label can refer to several related but distinct things:
- iOS 17 default wallpapers: the principal system backgrounds, commonly offered in light and dark variants.
- iOS 17 Kaleidoscope wallpapers: an additional group of designs. Apple does not publish a simple public count for the collection; AppleWalls lists 22 wallpapers in its iOS 17 collection, including the two main backgrounds and Kaleidoscope variants. That count is the archive’s, not an Apple-published total.
- iPhone 15 wallpapers: images associated with the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus launch.
- iPhone 15 Pro wallpapers: promotional designs associated with the Pro models and their titanium finishes.
- Live Photo wallpapers: assets that include motion data or work with iOS wallpaper effects, unlike an ordinary still image.

Where to download the wallpapers
Start with the wallpaper picker on your iPhone if the image is still available there. Apple does not guarantee that every older wallpaper collection will remain in the picker on every model or iOS release. If it is missing, use an archive that identifies its files and dimensions rather than saving a search-result thumbnail.

- AppleWalls’ iOS 17 collection lists downloadable PNG files and says its collection is sourced from Apple software releases. It is a third-party archive, not an Apple service or endorsement.
- The SniperGER iOS Wallpapers archive on GitHub collects wallpapers from multiple iOS releases and separates still images from motion assets. It is a community archive.
- OS X Daily’s iOS 17 wallpaper coverage provides another route to the principal backgrounds and discusses their resolution.
Prefer a direct, full-size image with a stated file format and pixel dimensions. Avoid image-search previews, screenshots, and pages where the real download is obscured by unrelated download buttons or bundled software. A third-party archive may describe a file as official or extracted from iOS, but unless Apple hosts it, treat that provenance as the archive’s claim.
Are the downloads really 4K?
Usually, “4K” is not the best description of an iPhone wallpaper. The commonly cited size for the main iOS 17 wallpapers is 1290 × 2796 pixels, a tall portrait format associated with the iPhone 15 Pro Max display. OS X Daily cautions that files advertised as “4K iOS 17 wallpapers” may be enlarged copies rather than original Apple assets. A 3840 × 2160 file can have 4K-class dimensions without containing more original detail.

Some archives also report versions measuring 1379 × 3000 pixels. That difference is a reason to check the actual file, not proof that one version is universally correct: an archive may have converted, resized, or exported a source differently. The safest description is the image’s measured dimensions and known provenance.

- High-resolution repost: may be useful, but its conversion and provenance may be unclear.
- Upscale: a larger image created by interpolation; larger dimensions do not restore missing detail.
- Preview: a compressed or resized image that may look soft when stretched to fill a phone screen.
For a phone, choose a well-sourced file close to your display’s portrait resolution. The iPhone 15 family spans different display sizes: the iPhone 15 is 1170 × 2532, iPhone 15 Pro is 1179 × 2556, iPhone 15 Plus is 1284 × 2778, and iPhone 15 Pro Max is 1290 × 2796. Older devices differ too: iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini are 1080 × 2340, while the third-generation iPhone SE is 750 × 1334. These are display resolutions, not a requirement that every wallpaper file match them exactly. iOS may still scale or crop an image to fit.

Save and set a downloaded wallpaper on iPhone
- Open the full-size image in Safari.
- Touch and hold the image, then choose Save to Photos or the equivalent save option.
- Open Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos and select the saved image.
- Adjust its position and any available Lock Screen style options, then tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it on both screens, or choose Customize Home Screen to choose a different Home Screen background.
Apple’s current instructions use the Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper flow and also describe adding a wallpaper from the Lock Screen gallery: touch and hold the Lock Screen, authenticate if needed, tap the add button, choose an image, customize it, and tap Add. Use separate Lock Screen and Home Screen images
After setting up the Lock Screen and tapping Add, choose Customize Home Screen rather than accepting the pair. Select Photos, choose another image, and tap Done. You can also use a color, gradient, or blurred version of the Lock Screen image. A quiet or darker Home Screen background often keeps app icons easier to read.

A wallpaper can crop even when its file has the same pixel dimensions as your phone’s display. The image’s aspect ratio, iOS scaling, interface areas, and Lock Screen effects all influence what remains visible.

- If it looks blurry: save the direct full-size image, not the archive’s gallery thumbnail. Check the saved file’s dimensions if possible, and compare it with the image in the browser. A compressed preview, resampling, or an aggressive upscale can soften gradients and details.
- If it is too zoomed: pinch to zoom out as far as the wallpaper editor permits. If the focal point is still cut off, crop or reposition the image in Photos or an image editor before applying it.
- If the clock or Dynamic Island covers the subject: choose a version with more empty space near the top, or move the image during customization. Keep important details clear of the clock, widgets, and notification area.
- If it fits one iPhone but not another: expect different cropping on phones with different resolutions, aspect ratios, notches, or Dynamic Island placement. Use a suitable high-resolution portrait source, then adjust it for that model.
- If appearance changes between light and dark interfaces: check whether you chose separate light and dark image variants or whether iOS is applying a display treatment. Two files in a collection are not necessarily a system-controlled pair.
Matching the display resolution can reduce unnecessary scaling, but it cannot guarantee an exact fit: iOS may reposition or enlarge the image to accommodate the wallpaper layout.
Static images versus Live Photo wallpapers
A PNG or JPEG download is a still image. It will not reproduce motion just because the original wallpaper was associated with an iPhone or an iOS 17 animation. Apple’s iOS 17 feature material describes motion effects for Live Photo wallpapers, but that does not make every video, GIF, or still image a compatible Live Photo.
To seek the motion effect, you need a compatible Live Photo asset or a supported Live Photo workflow. A still PNG cannot contain the motion data; a video saved to Photos does not automatically become a Live Photo wallpaper. Community archives may offer motion assets, but confirm what the file actually contains and expect compatibility to vary. Static wallpapers are the simpler, more reliable choice for use across devices.
Use the images on another iPhone, iPad, or computer
Static image files can generally be saved and used on other iPhones, iPads, Macs, PCs, and Android devices. You may need to crop them to fit the screen. The image does not carry over an Apple Lock Screen setup: widgets, clock styling, Focus links, and system transitions are separate features. Live Photo behavior may also be unavailable on another device or operating system.
If the wallpaper is missing or the download fails
- It is not in Settings: the collection may not be included in your installed build, may belong to a different device collection, or may have been removed from the picker. Check Photos for a saved copy; otherwise use a reputable archive.
- The page saves a tiny image: open the image itself at full size before saving. Check the saved file rather than judging resolution from the webpage preview.
- A “live” download does not move: verify that it is a compatible Live Photo, not a PNG, JPEG, GIF, or ordinary video. A still-image download remains static.
- An iPhone 15 image looks wrong: confirm whether it is an iOS 17 default wallpaper or an iPhone 15 model-specific promotional image. The names are often used loosely by wallpaper galleries.
Apple’s wallpaper picker and third-party archives are different sources: Apple does not promise that every older collection will remain available on every phone. If you need an archive, choose one that identifies files clearly; there is no need to modify the phone’s system software just to set a downloaded still image.
