Apple released iOS 16.1 on October 24, 2022, about six weeks after iOS 16.0. The free update added features that had been announced for iOS 16 but arrived later, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, third-party Live Activities, Apple Fitness+ workouts without an Apple Watch, Clean Energy Charging in the United States, and Matter support in the Home app. It supported the same iPhones as iOS 16: iPhone 8 and later. MacRumors reported the release date; Apple’s iOS update notes describe the features.

When did iOS 16.1 come out?

iOS 16.1 was released on October 24, 2022, as a free over-the-air iPhone update. It was the first major point update to iOS 16, which Apple launched on September 12, 2022. Apple had said some iOS 16 capabilities would arrive later in the year; 16.1 delivered several of them. Apple’s iOS 16 launch announcement outlines the initial release and deferred features.

Version Release date What it added
iOS 16.0 September 12, 2022 Initial iOS 16 release
iOS 16.1 October 24, 2022 Major feature update, including Shared Photo Library and third-party Live Activities
iOS 16.1.1 November 9, 2022 Bug fixes and security updates
iOS 16.1.2 November 30, 2022 Wireless-carrier compatibility improvements and Crash Detection optimizations for iPhone 14 models

Apple’s iOS update history documents the later 16.1.1 and 16.1.2 changes; Apple separately lists iOS 16.1.1 security information.

Which iPhones support iOS 16.1?

iOS 16.1 used the iOS 16 compatibility baseline: iPhone 8 and later, including the second- and third-generation iPhone SE. Apple’s launch announcement identifies the supported generation cutoff. Individual features could still depend on the model, region, language, carrier, app, or Apple service.

What changed in iOS 16.1?

iCloud Shared Photo Library

Shared Photo Library created a collaborative Photos library for up to six people total. Participants could add, edit, favorite, and delete shared photos and videos, subject to permissions. People could move items manually or use sharing suggestions, such as those based on participants in a photo. Unlike a Shared Album, this was intended to work as a shared library within Photos.

Because edits and deletions can affect content seen by the group, participants should agree on what belongs in the shared library and understand whether the camera is saving to a personal or shared collection. Consider account and storage arrangements before moving a large collection. Apple’s iOS feature notes cover Shared Photo Library.

Live Activities for third-party apps

iOS 16.1 enabled third-party apps to provide Live Activities: glanceable updates for things such as sports scores, a ride, food delivery, a timer, or a trip. On supported iPhones, they appear on the Lock Screen; iPhone 14 Pro models can also show them in the Dynamic Island.

The operating-system support did not make every app compatible automatically. The app developer had to implement Live Activities, and the usefulness and freshness of updates depended on the app, its service, and network conditions. Dynamic Island presentation was limited to compatible iPhone 14 Pro hardware. Apple documents the developer framework in its ActivityKit documentation.

Apple Fitness+ without an Apple Watch

With iOS 16.1, an iPhone user could do Apple Fitness+ workouts without owning or wearing an Apple Watch. Fitness+ remained a subscription service, and availability depended on supported countries or regions. Without a watch, some workout tracking and integration capabilities differed. Apple described the change in its iOS 16 announcement.

Clean Energy Charging

Clean Energy Charging was an optional feature intended to reduce charging-related emissions by timing charging for periods when the local grid was expected to use cleaner energy. Apple initially specified availability for users in the United States. It was not a faster-charging mode or a battery-capacity feature; depending on learned routines and grid conditions, charging could be delayed. See Apple’s launch announcement and update notes.

Matter support in the Home app

iOS 16.1 added Matter accessory support to Apple’s Home app, extending smart-home interoperability. Support did not guarantee that every accessory offered identical controls across ecosystems. Apple’s early developer notes documented setup conditions and known issues: Wi-Fi might need to be enabled during pairing; the pairing device needed to use the same iCloud account as the home hub; and, in the documented scenario, only the home owner—not an invited user—could pair Matter accessories. Some color adjustments could behave unexpectedly, and details for an unreachable accessory might not open. Apple’s iOS 16.1 release notes also identify the SDK bundled with Xcode 14.1 RC.

Wallet, Lock Screen, and model-specific changes

  • Wallet key sharing: Users could share supported keys through compatible apps and services; availability depended on the key provider and supported devices.
  • Dynamic Island and Reachability: iPhone 14 Pro models gained Reachability support for the Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island itself was specific to those Pro models, not all iOS 16.1 iPhones.
  • Wallpaper management: iOS 16.1 added options related to Lock Screen wallpaper selection and management.
  • Battery percentage: Battery-percentage display expanded to additional iPhone models.
  • Apple Card Savings Account: Wallet support was added for the service in the United States where available.

Apple’s feature summary is the primary reference for the update; some Wallet and display options depended on hardware, service, or region.

How to update an iPhone

The historical installation path for a compatible iPhone was Settings > General > Software Update. These steps describe the standard update process; they do not guarantee iOS 16.1 will still be offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and power, or make sure the battery is sufficiently charged.
  3. Open Settings, then tap General and Software Update.
  4. If an update is offered, tap Download and Install, enter the passcode if requested, and accept the terms.
  5. Allow the iPhone to download the update and restart.

On a current iOS version, wording and available options may differ. If Apple offers a newer compatible update, install the applicable current release rather than trying to obtain iOS 16.1 specifically.

Why might iOS 16.1 not appear?

  • The iPhone is incompatible: Models older than iPhone 8 did not support iOS 16.
  • The phone is already updated: Apple may offer a later applicable version rather than the historical 16.1 release.
  • Storage or connection is insufficient: Free space, Wi-Fi, and power can affect download and installation.
  • Management or beta settings intervene: A mobile-device-management policy, configuration profile, or beta configuration can affect what appears.
  • Availability or service conditions have changed: An update may be superseded or temporarily unavailable, or the device may have a network, activation, or Apple-server issue.

For a consumer iPhone, use Software Update and Apple’s supported update or restore guidance. Trying to force-install an old firmware file can introduce signing, data-loss, backup, and restore risks; it is not the normal route to a historical point release.

iOS 16.0 vs. iOS 16.1

Area iOS 16.0 iOS 16.1
Lock Screen Introduced the major redesign Added further wallpaper and Lock Screen refinements
Shared Photo Library Announced for a later update Added the collaborative library to Photos
Live Activities Introduced the system feature with limited initial availability Opened support to third-party apps
Fitness+ Fitness app available without a Watch Fitness+ workouts became available on iPhone without an Apple Watch
Clean Energy Charging Announced for later Added for users in the United States
Matter Announced for later Added support in the Home app

What followed iOS 16.1?

Apple released iOS 16.1.1 on November 9, 2022, with bug fixes and security updates. iOS 16.1.2 followed on November 30, bringing wireless-carrier compatibility improvements and Crash Detection optimizations for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. These were maintenance updates after 16.1, not replacements for its original feature set. Apple’s iOS update history lists the changes, and its 16.1.1 security page provides security details.

Is iOS 16.1 still relevant?

iOS 16.1 is a historical release, not the current upgrade target. Its date and features matter for understanding an older iPhone, an archived release, or the progression of iOS 16. For a device being used now, check Settings > General > Software Update and use the latest compatible update Apple offers instead of seeking out 16.1.
