Inter Miami’s trip to Jamaica was an archived fixture, not an upcoming 2026 match. The teams met at Kingston’s National Stadium on Thursday, March 13, 2025, in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16. Miami held a 2–0 aggregate lead, while Lionel Messi’s availability remained uncertain after he missed three matches and was an unused substitute against Charlotte FC.
This article was originally prepared as a preview of the March 13, 2025 match and is preserved for archival reference.

Miami’s first-leg goals came from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez. The result gave Inter Miami a substantial advantage but did not make the return match meaningless: a 2–0 Cavalier win would have sent the series to extra time, while a Cavalier victory by three or more goals would have eliminated Miami. The official preview also identified away goals as the first tiebreaker if the aggregate score was level. Was Messi expected to play?
Messi was available for selection but was not a safe lock to start. MLS reported that he had missed Miami’s previous three matches and had remained on the bench during the preceding 1–0 victory over Charlotte FC.

That made two outcomes plausible: Messi could start if Miami wanted to end the tie early, or he could begin on the bench and provide a controlled attacking option later. With a 2–0 lead to protect, projecting 90 minutes from him would have been too certain. His absence from the previous matches also made a substitute appearance more plausible than automatically assuming a full-strength start. This projection uses Miami’s first-leg XI as the baseline rather than presenting an unverified lineup as fact. Allende was a particularly strong candidate to retain his place after scoring in four consecutive matches, while Suárez, Busquets and Alba remained central veteran options.
If Messi started
Messi could have replaced Cremaschi or taken a left-sided attacking role, with Allende continuing on the opposite side and Suárez remaining at center forward. That would give Miami its most recognizable attacking trio while still preserving the first-leg structure.

Cremaschi or another wide attacker would likely have started alongside Allende and Suárez. In that scenario, Messi would have been Miami’s clearest second-half weapon if Cavalier made the aggregate scoreline uncomfortable.

Projected Cavalier FC lineup

Concacaf’s first-leg tactical report provides the player baseline, but its extracted graphic is not sufficiently clear to guarantee every positional assignment. The names and formation should therefore be treated as a likely framework, not a confirmed second-leg XI.
Cavalier was not simply an overmatched opponent. The Jamaican club qualified directly for the Round of 16 as the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup champion and had also won the 2024 Jamaica Premier League. Stein was the Caribbean Cup’s leading scorer with eight goals, while Atkinson recorded six goals and five assists and Calvin contributed five goals and six assists in that competition. Concacaf’s official match notes detail that background.
Why the first leg mattered
Miami’s 2–0 win was built on goals from Allende and Suárez, but Cavalier’s defensive work deserved attention. Concacaf recorded 22 Cavalier interceptions and 17 tackles won in the first meeting. Miami, meanwhile, allowed Cavalier only one shot on target.

That suggested a tactical battle rather than a simple mismatch. Cavalier had shown it could disrupt Miami’s possession and compete for second balls. The challenge in Kingston was turning that resistance into enough sustained attacking pressure to score at least twice.

Can Cavalier score first?
Cavalier needed an early goal to change the emotional and tactical shape of the series. A fast start in front of the Kingston crowd could force Miami to defend deeper and make the tie genuinely competitive. Every additional minute without a Cavalier goal, however, increased the pressure on the home side.
Will Miami control the match through Busquets?
Busquets’ ability to receive under pressure and move the ball away from Cavalier’s defensive traps was central to Miami’s game management. Miami did not need to attack recklessly, but it also could not become so passive that Cavalier controlled territory and second balls.
How many minutes could Messi provide?
The key question was not only whether Messi would start. It was whether his recent absence made a shorter, managed appearance more sensible. Miami had the option of using him to settle the tie late rather than exposing him to an unnecessary full match from the opening whistle.

Cavalier entered its second consecutive Concacaf Champions Cup after winning the 2024 Caribbean Cup. It had yet to score in the competition, having lost both 2024 Round One matches against FC Cincinnati, 2–0 and 4–0, but that record did not erase its regional title or continental experience.
