At CES on January 6, 2025, Intel announced its Core Ultra 200H and 200HX mobile processors, with the Core Ultra 9 285H at the center of claims that selected AI workloads could run up to 2.2× to 3.3× faster than on the previous-generation Core Ultra 9 185H. Those are Intel-reported results for specific benchmarks—not a promise that every AI app, or every laptop using a 200-series chip, will be two or three times faster.

Intel’s AI performance claims, at a glance

The headline figures compare the Core Ultra 9 285H with the Core Ultra 9 185H. Intel’s published results cover three particular workloads:

Workload Intel-reported improvement What the result covers
UL Procyon AI Computer Vision Up to 2.2× A computer-vision benchmark, not a general score for all AI software.
Llama 3 8B inference Up to 3.3× A particular local language-model workload; Intel’s material references INT4 quantization.
Stable Diffusion 1.5 Up to 2.3× A specific image-generation workload; Intel’s material references FP16 precision.

Intel’s CES 2025 announcement introduced the broader mobile lineup, while launch coverage reported the workload-specific multipliers. Intel’s Series 2 benchmark information provides context for interpreting its performance claims. Benchmark results depend on the software version, model, precision, drivers, operating system, memory, BIOS, and power configuration. “Up to” describes a result under a particular test setup; it does not predict the speedup every user will see.

What Intel announced—and what it did not

The January 6 announcement included Core Ultra 200H and higher-power 200HX mobile processors. The wider Series 2 family also includes 200U and 200V mobile chips and 200S desktop processors. The 2.2×, 3.3×, and 2.3× figures discussed here are specifically associated with the Core Ultra 9 285H versus the Core Ultra 9 185H. They should not be applied to every Series 2 processor.

The 285H is a mobile processor intended to appear in laptops, not a standalone consumer CPU with one universal retail price. Laptop makers set the system’s price and choose its memory, cooling, power limits, battery, display, and whether to add a discrete GPU. Intel’s 285H specification page lists a maximum turbo frequency of 5.4 GHz, 16 cores (6 Performance-cores, 8 Efficient-cores, and 2 Low Power Efficient-cores), 16 threads, and 45 W processor base power. It also lists a configurable minimum assured power of 35 W and integrated Intel Arc 140T graphics. Supported memory options include LPDDR5/x-8400 or DDR5-6400, depending on the laptop design.

Which part of the chip does the AI work?

AI on a PC can use three kinds of processor hardware:

  • CPU: Flexible general-purpose processing, useful for tasks that are not optimized for a GPU or NPU and for work that needs low latency.
  • GPU: Parallel processing suited to graphics and many AI workloads, including image generation and computer vision, when the application and software stack support it.
  • NPU: A dedicated accelerator designed for supported AI tasks that can run efficiently without keeping the CPU or GPU as busy.

The benchmark multiplier is not an NPU speed rating. Intel’s performance material separates CPU, GPU, and NPU results, and the AI benchmark figures should be read in the context of the engine and software path used for each test. The 285H’s Arc 140T integrated GPU is an important part of its AI-capable platform; a headline result does not establish that the NPU alone produced the gain.

Intel also describes expanded AI acceleration across the CPU, GPU, and NPU, alongside newer Performance- and Efficient-core designs and integrated Arc graphics. The 285H product information lists TSMC N3B among its manufacturing technologies. These features create potential for faster supported workloads, but architecture alone does not guarantee a specific application speedup. Runtime and kernel optimization, model precision, driver maturity, memory bandwidth, and thermal limits all matter.

Where the difference might matter

A 285H laptop is most relevant if you run AI locally and your application can use Intel’s supported acceleration. Examples include local LLM inference, image generation, computer-vision work, and supported video or content-creation effects. Background features such as transcription, camera effects, or noise suppression may also use local acceleration when the application and system support it.

Intel has described a broad ecosystem of AI features and optimized models for its platforms. That is an ecosystem claim, not a guarantee that every app will use the NPU, GPU, or Intel’s OpenVINO software stack automatically. Check the application’s current hardware-backend support and settings. A feature may run on the CPU, use a supported GPU path, use the NPU, or do its work in the cloud; those paths have different hardware requirements and results.

If you use a browser-based chatbot or another cloud AI service, the model inference usually runs on remote servers. A faster local NPU or integrated GPU generally will not make that server-side response two or three times faster. Your laptop can still matter for local preprocessing or other tasks, but the benchmark multiplier is not a measure of cloud-service speed.

Why two 285H laptops can perform differently

The processor name is only one part of a laptop’s performance. The 285H has a 45 W base-power specification and a 35 W configurable minimum assured power, but the laptop maker’s design and configuration affect how the chip behaves over time. Cooling capacity, firmware, sustained power limits, fan settings, memory speed and capacity, and background processes can all influence results.

Memory is particularly important for integrated graphics and local AI. The GPU shares system resources, and larger models can require substantial memory. A laptop with a small memory configuration may be unable to run a model that fits comfortably on a better-equipped system, regardless of the processor’s theoretical capability. An optional discrete GPU can also change which device an application uses—and can provide much higher throughput for demanding AI or creative work, at the cost of additional power, heat, weight, and price.

How it compares with the Core Ultra 9 185H

The 285H is not simply the 185H with a faster AI score: Intel lists a different core and graphics configuration, including Arc 140T integrated graphics, and a maximum turbo frequency of 5.4 GHz. The reported multipliers indicate substantial gains in the named tests, but they do not establish the same improvement in general CPU work, battery life, gaming, or every AI application.

The 185H is not automatically a poor choice. If a current laptop with that processor already handles your work, a new system may not be worth buying solely for Intel’s benchmark claims. The practical question is whether a 285H laptop improves the particular local workloads you use enough to justify its price and trade-offs.

Who should consider a 285H laptop?

  • Local-AI users and developers: Consider one if your models and tools support Intel’s GPU, NPU, or other acceleration paths. Confirm the model’s memory needs and supported runtime first.
  • Creators: It may suit workflows that use supported local AI effects or integrated graphics. For heavy image generation, 3D, or GPU-intensive video work, compare laptops with discrete graphics as well.
  • Gamers: Compare the complete laptop, especially its discrete GPU, cooling, display, and sustained performance. The processor’s AI claims do not establish gaming performance.
  • Business buyers: Compare manageability, security, support, and deployment needs in addition to performance. Intel vPro features may matter to managed fleets; they are not automatically useful to every individual buyer.
  • Everyday office and cloud-AI users: The headline AI multipliers may have little bearing on your routine if most AI processing happens remotely or your apps do not use Intel acceleration. Battery life, display, keyboard, memory, and price may be more important.

Intel’s Evo branding signals a set of platform requirements for laptop experience, but it does not replace checking the system’s GPU, memory, cooling, or suitability for a demanding workload. Similarly, Copilot+ eligibility and particular Windows AI features depend on Microsoft’s requirements, Windows version, OEM configuration, and availability; do not assume that every Core Ultra 200H laptop includes every feature. Check the exact model and current software requirements.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm the exact processor. “Core Ultra Series 2” covers multiple families; the 285H benchmark claims do not apply to every chip in the range.
  2. Check RAM capacity and type. Consider both your ordinary workload and the memory needs of local models. Verify whether memory is upgradeable.
  3. Identify the graphics hardware. Check whether the laptop uses the integrated Arc 140T alone or includes a discrete GPU, and whether your apps support the hardware you intend to use.
  4. Look for sustained performance information. Cooling design and power settings can matter more than a brief peak frequency in a long-running task.
  5. Verify software support. Check that the applications, frameworks, drivers, and model runtimes you use support Intel acceleration on the operating system you plan to run.
  6. Compare the whole laptop and its current price. Screen, battery, ports, warranty, SSD, and configuration can make two systems with the same processor very different purchases.

The 200H and 200HX processors were announced for OEM laptops, with availability through manufacturers and retailers. A 285H laptop’s price and configuration therefore depend on the specific model and market; there is no single universal retail price for the processor itself. As of September 2026, the 285H is a 2025 launch, and Intel has since moved to later Core Ultra generations. Compare current systems at the same price rather than relying on launch-era positioning.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
