Intel announced five 14th Gen Core HX processors at CES 2024 on January 8, 2024. Built on the Raptor Lake design and Intel 7 process, the chips target high-performance gaming laptops, mobile workstations, creator systems, and other desktop-replacement notebooks. They deliver higher clocks across the range, while the i7 models receive the most meaningful core-count upgrades.
The launch was an incremental refresh rather than a new mobile architecture. Intel’s newer Core Ultra family represented the company’s newer Meteor Lake mobile direction; 14th Gen HX occupied a separate, higher-power performance segment.
Which 14th Gen HX processors did Intel announce?
Intel announced these five processors:
- Core i9-14900HX
- Core i7-14700HX
- Core i7-14650HX
- Core i5-14500HX
- Core i5-14450HX
Intel said more than 60 partner systems were expected during 2024. These processors were designed for large gaming laptops and mobile workstations with substantial cooling, discrete graphics, expandable memory, and high sustained performance.
The HX designation is important. These are not thin-and-light laptop chips: Intel specifies a 55 W processor base power and up to 157 W maximum turbo power. Actual laptop behavior depends on the manufacturer’s firmware, cooling system, power limits, fan profiles, and CPU/GPU power sharing.

The Core i5-14450HX has 10 cores and 16 threads, not 10 threads. Its six Performance-cores support two threads each, while its four Efficient-cores add four more threads.

Why this is called a Raptor Lake Refresh
The 14th Gen HX family retains the Raptor Lake foundation and Intel 7 manufacturing process. It is closer in concept to Intel’s 14th Gen desktop Raptor Lake Refresh than to a clean-sheet mobile design.
The flagship Core i9-14900HX keeps the same basic configuration as the Core i9-13900HX: eight P-cores, 16 E-cores, 24 total cores, 32 threads, and 36 MB of cache. Its main CPU change is higher turbo frequency, with P-core turbo rising from 5.4 GHz to 5.8 GHz and E-core turbo from 3.9 GHz to 4.1 GHz.

That makes the i9 faster on paper, but it does not make it a new architecture. Maximum turbo frequencies are conditional and depend on temperature, active-core count, firmware, workload, and available power.
The i7 models bring the biggest generational changes
The Core i7-14700HX is arguably the most interesting chip in the range. Compared with the i7-13700HX, it increases the configuration from 16 cores and 24 threads to 20 cores and 28 threads by adding four E-cores. It also raises P-core turbo from 5.0 GHz to 5.5 GHz, E-core turbo from 3.7 GHz to 3.9 GHz, and cache from 30 MB to 33 MB.
Those additional E-cores should be useful for sustained multithreaded workloads such as rendering, compiling, video encoding, simulation, and heavy multitasking. The size of the real-world improvement still depends on the laptop’s cooling system and power limits.

The i5-14500HX and i5-14450HX are more modest updates. Their core configurations largely follow their predecessors, with improvements focused mainly on frequency specifications. Intel’s lineup therefore should not be described as a simple rebadge, but neither should it be presented as a wholly new generation across every model.
Memory, PCIe, and overclocking
The platform supports:
- DDR5-5600 memory
- DDR4-3200 memory
- Up to 192 GB of memory
- CPU PCIe connectivity including PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0 lanes
- Intel XMP memory overclocking on compatible systems
- CPU, graphics, and memory overclocking where the laptop firmware and cooling system allow it
These are platform capabilities, not promises about every laptop. A manufacturer may limit the installed memory, provide only two accessible SODIMM slots, restrict memory speed, omit PCIe 5.0 storage support, or solder some components. Check the exact model before buying.
Thunderbolt 5 and Wi-Fi 7 are not guaranteed
Intel’s launch materials highlighted support for Thunderbolt 5 controllers, Thunderbolt 4, discrete Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 or 5.4. Intel described Thunderbolt 5 as offering 80 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth, with bandwidth boost reaching up to 120 Gbps in certain display and data scenarios. The manufacturer must include the appropriate controller, wiring, port, firmware, and certification. Some systems may offer Thunderbolt 4, while others may offer no Thunderbolt connection at all.

The same qualification applies to Wi-Fi 7. Intel described it as a discrete wireless option rather than a universal feature built into every HX processor. Check whether the specific laptop includes Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E, and remember that wireless performance also depends on the router, channel width, drivers, and regulatory region.
Integrated graphics are not the reason to buy HX
The processors use Intel UHD Graphics, with maximum frequencies ranging from 1.50 GHz on the i5-14450HX to 1.65 GHz on the i9-14900HX. These are small changes and do not represent a major integrated-graphics upgrade.
HX laptops are generally paired with discrete GPUs. For gaming, the discrete GPU, its power limit, cooling system, display resolution, and graphics-switching behavior usually matter much more than the processor’s integrated GPU frequency.

How much faster are they?
Intel claimed up to 17% better gaming performance and up to 51% faster multitasking performance compared with competing systems. Those are Intel-supplied, “up to” figures tied to particular laptop configurations, applications, games, settings, and power modes. They should not be treated as universal gains.

Independent results can vary sharply between laptops using the same processor. A thick gaming notebook with generous cooling may sustain higher power than a thinner system. In games, performance may also be limited by the GPU, especially at 1440p or 4K. A laptop with a slightly slower CPU but a more powerful GPU can therefore deliver higher frame rates overall.
What to check before buying a 14th Gen HX laptop
- Discrete GPU: Check the GPU model and wattage before focusing on the CPU name.
- Cooling and power behavior: Look for independent testing of the exact configuration, not just the processor family.
- Display: Compare resolution, refresh rate, response time, brightness, and color coverage.
- Memory: Confirm capacity, speed, channel configuration, and whether the RAM is replaceable.
- Storage: Check SSD capacity and the number of accessible M.2 slots.
- Ports: Verify whether the laptop actually includes Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5, rather than assuming platform support.
- Battery and charger: HX systems prioritize performance and can be heavy, power-hungry, and dependent on large chargers.
- Price: Compare against discounted 13th Gen HX models, AMD Ryzen 9 HX laptops, newer Core Ultra HX systems, and desktop-replacement designs.
For example, Lenovo’s Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 was offered with the Core i9-14900HX, demonstrating how the chip appeared in premium gaming laptops. Configuration, availability, and pricing vary by market and date, so the individual specification sheet matters more than the product family name.
Who should choose 14th Gen HX?
These processors make sense when sustained CPU performance matters more than portability. They suit gaming laptops with powerful discrete graphics, creator systems for rendering and encoding, engineering or simulation software, software development, and users who need expandable memory and storage.

They are a weaker fit for buyers who prioritize low weight, quiet operation, long unplugged battery life, low cost, or integrated-graphics gaming. HX does not mean better battery life, and a 5.8 GHz turbo rating does not mean the processor will run at 5.8 GHz continuously.
