Native Arm64 applications generally provide the best experience on Snapdragon. Traditional x86 and x64 Windows applications can run using Microsoft’s translation and emulation technologies, but performance and reliability vary. Low-level software is a greater risk: drivers, kernel utilities, some VPN and endpoint-security clients, specialist engineering tools, older peripherals and certain anti-cheat systems may not work correctly.

That does not make Windows on Arm universally incompatible. Assess each application in one of four categories:

  1. Native Arm64: usually the preferred option.
  2. x86 or x64 under emulation: often usable, but workload-dependent.
  3. Driver-dependent: the highest compatibility risk, especially for printers, scanners, accessories and security software.
  4. Unsupported: software or games that require unavailable drivers, plug-ins or anti-cheat components.

Before buying a Snapdragon laptop, check the developer’s system requirements and driver downloads for every application you cannot replace. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC catalog confirms that Snapdragon systems are Windows PCs, but Windows branding does not guarantee compatibility with every Windows application.

CPU performance: which one is fastest?

Short bursts and single-core work

The X1E-84-100 was designed to compete strongly with Meteor Lake in single-threaded performance. Qualcomm’s launch material reported substantial advantages over the Core Ultra 7 155H and compared the Snapdragon with the Core Ultra 9 185H in selected Geekbench results.

Those are Qualcomm’s vendor-selected results, not a universal ranking. Any fair comparison must identify the benchmark version, laptop models, memory, power mode, cooling, operating-system build and whether the application ran natively on Arm or through emulation.

For browsing, office applications, meetings and many short interactive tasks, all three can feel fast. The Snapdragon’s lower power consumption can make it feel particularly responsive without fan noise, while Intel laptops may offer more predictable results with older or specialized software.

Multi-core and sustained workloads

The 185H has the highest published power class and the fastest maximum clock of the two Intel chips. In a laptop with generous sustained power and strong cooling, it can be the fastest option here for long renders, code compilation, batch exports and simulations.

The 155H has the same 16-core/22-thread topology but lower clock and power targets. In a thin laptop, that can be an advantage: if the manufacturer limits both processors to similar power, much of the 185H’s theoretical advantage disappears.

The Snapdragon can deliver very competitive multi-core performance at lower power, particularly in native Arm applications. Emulated software can change the result. Independent databases such as Notebookcheck’s comparison contain systems operating at materially different power levels, including roughly 20 W, 45 W, 70 W and 90 W configurations. Use those results to understand performance ranges, not to assign one fixed ranking to each processor.

Battery life, heat and noise

The Snapdragon X Elite’s strongest practical argument is efficiency. It is well suited to thin laptops intended for browsing, Microsoft 365, video calls, streaming and travel. Qualcomm also promotes connected standby, 5G and Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, although a laptop may not include every feature.

Actual battery life depends on the complete system:

  • battery capacity in watt-hours;
  • OLED or IPS display, brightness and refresh rate;
  • browser workload and video codec;
  • cellular modem use;
  • background applications and security tools;
  • power mode and fan profile;
  • firmware and connected-standby behavior.

Therefore, “Snapdragon has better battery life” is a useful tendency, not a guarantee. Compare independent tests of the exact laptop rather than processor branding.

The 155H can be a sensible middle ground for users who want Intel compatibility without the 185H’s higher power requirements. A 185H in a large, well-cooled chassis may deliver much more performance, but it can also consume more energy and produce more heat.

Graphics and gaming

Both Intel processors include an eight-Xe-core Arc integrated GPU. The 185H’s listed maximum dynamic graphics frequency is up to 2.35 GHz, versus up to 2.25 GHz for the 155H. The Snapdragon uses an integrated Adreno GPU, but direct comparisons require independent tests on comparable laptops.

For gaming and serious graphics work, the more important question is whether the laptop has a discrete GPU. Intel processors are widely paired with NVIDIA GeForce RTX and professional RTX graphics. A Core Ultra 9 185H laptop with an RTX 4070 is a fundamentally different machine from a Snapdragon laptop using integrated Adreno graphics.

Make the decision in this order:

  1. Check whether the laptop has a discrete GPU.
  2. Compare that GPU’s model, wattage and cooling.
  3. Check the games and anti-cheat systems you use.
  4. Only then compare the CPUs.

The 155H can also be paired with discrete graphics, including RTX 4050-class systems. For moderate creative work, that may be a better value than paying for a 185H configuration. Notebookcheck’s comparison page lists 185H systems with graphics ranging from integrated Arc to RTX 4070, RTX 4080, RTX 4090 and professional GPUs, demonstrating why processor-only gaming comparisons are misleading.

For a household using browsers, Microsoft 365, streaming and mainstream communications, Snapdragon can be an excellent fit. For a business or technical user with legacy tools, Intel remains the safer default.

AI and Copilot+ features

The X1E-84-100 has a published 45 TOPS Hexagon NPU figure. Intel lists 11 NPU TOPS for both the 185H and 155H, with total platform figures of 35 and 33 peak TOPS respectively.

These numbers are not directly interchangeable application benchmarks. Real AI performance depends on model precision, framework support, memory bandwidth, GPU acceleration, CPU fallback and whether the application is optimized for the NPU. A higher TOPS rating does not automatically mean faster Photoshop features, video effects, transcription or local language-model inference.

The Snapdragon’s NPU figure is particularly relevant to supported Copilot+ features and local AI workloads that use the NPU. Intel may offer broader flexibility through its CPU, integrated GPU, discrete GPU and software ecosystem. Choose based on the AI applications you actually use, not TOPS alone.

Do not assume that every USB-C port is Thunderbolt. Before buying, verify:

  • USB4 and Thunderbolt support;
  • external-display limits;
  • dock compatibility;
  • external-GPU support;
  • SD-card reader;
  • SSD type and upgradeability;
  • whether memory is soldered.

Storage deserves special attention on Snapdragon models. For example, Samsung lists a Galaxy Book4 Edge configuration with 16 GB of memory and 1 TB of eUFS storage. That is not the same upgrade path as a conventional replaceable NVMe SSD, so inspect the exact configuration before purchase.

For commercial comparisons, historical Samsung examples illustrate the range. A Galaxy Book4 Edge used the X1E-84-100 and targeted thin, quiet productivity. Galaxy Book4 Ultra configurations paired the 185H or 155H with NVIDIA graphics and were designed for substantially heavier creative and gaming workloads. Samsung price files listed historical configurations, including a 185H/RTX 4070 model and a 155H/RTX 4050 model, but some were marked EOL or reflect older MSRP. Treat them as configuration examples, not current prices. Verify the live price, stock, warranty and return policy on the exact product page.

Samsung also listed the X1E-84-100 in different configurations, including a 16-inch model with 16 GB memory and 512 GB or 1 TB storage. Qualcomm’s platform table lists up to 4.2 GHz, while Samsung has described a particular Galaxy Book4 Edge configuration at 3.8 GHz with boost behavior. These figures are not necessarily contradictory: one describes the platform maximum and the other a specific laptop configuration.

Final buying advice

Buy the Snapdragon X Elite X1E-84-100 when your priority is efficient, quiet mobile computing and you have confirmed that your required applications, drivers, games and accessories work on Windows on Arm.
