The MikroTik RDS2216-2XG-4S+4XS-2XQ ROSE Data Server has two internal M.2 positions, but they are SATA-connected—not slots for ordinary NVMe M.2 drives. A pair of M.2 2280 SATA SSDs can add compact local storage or form a RAID 1 mirror. Expect modest performance: ServeTheHome reports that the internal path is limited to SATA II, so these bays make more sense for boot or utility storage than as the ROSE’s high-throughput tier.
This guide covers what fits, what was tested, how to check the drives in RouterOS, and the trade-offs to consider before relying on a mirror.
Which MikroTik ROSE has the internal SSD bays?
This installation applies to the MikroTik RDS2216-2XG-4S+4XS-2XQ ROSE Data Server. Do not assume that another MikroTik product, or another device described as “ROSE,” has the same internal storage layout.

What SSDs fit?
Choose M.2 SATA drives, not PCIe/NVMe-only M.2 SSDs. The M.2 name describes a form factor and connector family; it does not guarantee that a drive’s interface matches the host. In this case, the slot labels and the reported installation identify the internal connections as SATA.
The documented configuration used M.2 2280 SATA drives. Before buying, confirm the drive’s length and check mechanical clearance, especially for double-sided modules. The tested configuration does not certify every SATA M.2 model or every module thickness and power characteristic.

ServeTheHome installed two Silicon Power A55 1TB M.2 2280 SATA SSDs. Its April 25, 2025 article reported a price of about $52 per drive at that time; that is historical, not a current price. The useful takeaway is that those specific drives worked in the reported setup—not that every A55 revision or every SATA M.2 drive is guaranteed compatible. Read the installation report and see its photographs.
Important performance limit: SATA II
There is a labeling wrinkle. The board markings are reported as SATA 3.0, while ServeTheHome says the system exposes the internal storage over a SATA II interface. SATA II has a nominal link rate of 3Gbps; SATA III’s nominal rate is 6Gbps. Those are link rates, not promised file-transfer speeds, and real throughput is lower and workload-dependent.

A SATA III SSD may therefore be usable while still being limited by the ROSE’s SATA II host path. Buying a faster-rated SATA drive does not remove that bottleneck, and an NVMe drive is not a performance upgrade for these SATA-connected sockets. For faster storage, consider the RDS2216’s U.2 or external PCIe-oriented options instead.
Installation and RouterOS checks
The available installation report documents the installed drives and slot labels, but it is not a complete chassis service manual. Follow MikroTik’s hardware guidance for safe access; do not force a module or guess at retention hardware. Use this cautious workflow:

- Prepare: Back up the RouterOS configuration and note the installed RouterOS version.
- Power down: Shut the server down and disconnect power before opening the chassis.
- Install: Fit only confirmed M.2 SATA modules of a mechanically suitable size. Secure them with the appropriate retention hardware, then close the chassis.
- Check detection: After boot, run
/disk printin RouterOS, or inspect the disk view in WinBox or WebFig. Confirm that both drives appear. If one does not, power down and check seating and compatibility before proceeding. - Set up storage: Use the current disk and partition menus for your RouterOS release to inspect devices, create the intended layout, and mount or assign the resulting storage to a service. Verify device identity before formatting: formatting is destructive.
- If mirroring: Create RAID 1 through the ROSE storage functions available in your installed release. Confirm both members and the array’s health status. Do not copy command syntax from a different RouterOS release without checking the current documentation.
- Test recovery: Check that the storage remains visible after a reboot, understand how the system reports a failed member, and test your recovery and backup procedures before putting important data on the array.
MikroTik’s disk documentation explains disk visibility and management in RouterOS. Its storage documentation covers ROSE capabilities, including RAID and supported filesystems and services. Availability and exact menus depend on the platform, installed package, and RouterOS version.
Is RAID 1 a sensible use for the pair?
Yes. ServeTheHome identifies RAID 1 as one possible use, and MikroTik documents RAID functionality for ROSE storage. RAID 1 mirrors data across the two drives: with two 1TB SSDs, expect roughly 1TB of usable raw capacity rather than 2TB, before filesystem and metadata overhead. The mirror may help keep storage available after one drive fails, but it does not make the SATA II path faster.

A mirror is not a backup. RAID 1 does not protect against accidental deletion, filesystem corruption, malware, theft, failure of the server or its controller, or other events that affect both copies. Keep a separate backup and periodically verify that you can restore it.

For a light-duty boot or utility mirror, consumer SATA SSDs may be adequate. For continuous, write-heavy, or reliability-sensitive use, compare published endurance ratings (such as TBW) and consider drives with power-loss protection (PLP). MikroTik recommends PLP drives in its storage guidance for reliability-sensitive operation; PLP is a general recommendation, not a stated requirement for these bays.
Using matching models and capacities simplifies a mirror. Also account for internal airflow and the inconvenience of replacing a drive inside the chassis. When replacing a failed member, do not assume that any drive with the same advertised capacity will be accepted: usable sector count can vary. Check the RouterOS recovery procedure and array status for your version, and avoid leaving a mirror degraded longer than necessary.

When to use U.2, external storage, or a single drive
If the goal is higher performance or a larger storage tier, look at the RDS2216’s U.2 and external PCIe-oriented options rather than trying to make the internal pair do that job. MikroTik lists U.2 storage options for the platform, including the SSD-U2-7-1TB as a tested RDS2216 option on its product page. If you only need a small utility volume and can tolerate a single-drive failure, one internal SATA SSD is simpler but has no mirrored-drive protection. In either configuration, keep backups on separate storage.
Bottom line
The RDS2216’s two internal M.2 positions are useful when you need compact, modest-performance SATA storage—particularly a mirrored boot or utility volume. Buy compatible M.2 SATA drives, not NVMe-only modules; treat the reported SATA II path as the performance ceiling; and use U.2 or external storage for workloads that need more throughput. Confirm detection and health in the RouterOS version you run, and keep an independent backup whether or not you use RAID 1.
