If Instagram’s familiar DM shortcut now takes you to Reels—or your messages icon has moved to the bottom bar—you may be seeing one of the app’s changing navigation tests. Instagram is putting Reels and messaging in more prominent positions, but there isn’t one new layout that every account has received.
The distinction matters: some users are testing an app that opens directly to Reels, while others have a more conventional feed with Reels and DMs promoted to bottom tabs. Many vocal users dislike the relocated messages shortcut and changed gestures, but the available reports don’t show that all users oppose the redesign.
What changed in Instagram’s navigation?
Instagram’s Reels-first direction is showing up in related, but distinct, interface experiments. The most prominent change for many users is not that the feed disappeared; it is that the app has rearranged its main destinations and made Reels easier to reach.

Meta’s September 2025 announcement of the India test described three feed views—All, Friends and Latest—alongside the Reels-first opening screen. All included recommendations as well as posts and Reels from followed accounts; Friends showed content from followed accounts that also follow you; Latest was chronological. Those details describe that test, not necessarily the layout on every account.

In a related version, the feed stayed first while Reels and DMs moved into prominent tabs. Engadget’s report on the navigation test described an option offered to some users. Other reported layouts have changed where the create button and Search appear, so no single screenshot should be treated as the definitive design.
Where and when is the redesign appearing?
- September 28, 2025: Meta announced a limited Reels-first mobile test in India.
- September 29, 2025: TechCrunch reported testing in India and South Korea and said Instagram intended to simplify navigation more broadly.
- October 2025: Instagram began offering a related navigation test to more users, with Reels and DMs given dedicated, prominent tabs, according to Social Media Today.
- December 2025 onward: Coverage documented more users reporting the bottom-positioned DM button and criticizing the change. Reports continued into 2026.
This is evidence of expanding tests and account-level changes—not proof that Instagram has completed a uniform global rollout. Availability can differ by region, account, device and test group. People have also reported seeing different layouts on multiple accounts using the same phone. A similar experience on iPad should not be taken as proof that every phone account has it.

Why move Reels and DMs forward?
Meta’s stated case is that Reels and messaging are central to how people use Instagram. In its announcement, Meta said messaging had become the most popular way to share photos and videos on Instagram, and that Reels were reshared more than 4.5 billion times per day across Meta platforms. Those are Meta’s own figures, not independent measurements. Instagram head Adam Mosseri also framed the navigation experiment around Reels and DMs driving much of the service’s growth in recent years.

Making both easier to reach may encourage more viewing, sharing and repeat visits. That is a reasonable interpretation of the design, not a separate claim by Meta that every user benefits from the change.

Why are users upset about the DM button?
The most common complaint is disruption to habit. For years, many users looked to the upper-right corner for messages or used a familiar swipe to get there. A relocated bottom tab means relearning the route. The sharper frustration comes when a gesture that used to lead to DMs instead opens a full-screen Reels feed—precisely when someone was trying to contact a person.
Some users also feel the change shifts Instagram away from a friend-and-photo experience toward video consumption. That is a perception, not a universal verdict: people use Instagram in different ways, and online complaints are not a representative survey of its user base. Still, reported reactions to the DM relocation and user discussions show a visible backlash, particularly around muscle memory and the loss of a dependable shortcut.

The rollout itself adds to the irritation. Some users encountered an invitation to try a new layout; others reported that their interface changed without a clear opt-in or an obvious way back. A bottom bar may be easier for some people to reach with a thumb, but changing gestures and tab positions can make navigation less predictable—especially for people who rely on consistent routines.

Where to find messages in the new layout
If your account has the redesigned navigation, look for the DM or message icon in the bottom tab bar. Its exact position can vary. Tapping that tab is the direct route; don’t assume that the old swipe or upper-right shortcut still works in the same way. If the familiar gesture opens Reels, use the visible navigation controls rather than repeating it.

Can you switch back?
There is no verified universal setting that restores the old Instagram navigation. Some people offered an optional test have had an opt-out; other users report that they cannot find one. What appears on your account may be controlled by Instagram’s account-level testing, so reinstalling or updating the app is not a reliable rollback.
- If Instagram presents a test prompt, check it for options such as Try later, Not now or another way to decline.
- If the interface appears broken rather than merely different, update Instagram and restart the app. This may fix a partial or buggy display, but it is not a guaranteed way to restore the old design.
- For a malfunction, use Instagram’s in-app Help or Report a problem options, or visit the Instagram Help Center.
- If the mobile layout is getting in the way, Instagram on the web may be a temporary alternative. Avoid unofficial old app packages or modified clients: they are not an official rollback and can create security, privacy and account risks.
Updating the app may not change which design your account receives, because a test can be activated remotely. Notifications may still provide a direct route into a specific conversation, but that behavior can depend on device and operating system, so don’t rely on it as a universal workaround.
What the redesign signals
Instagram is not pushing DMs aside; it is placing them alongside Reels as a central part of the product. That pairing makes sense for Meta’s strategy: video draws attention, and messages help circulate it among friends. The tension is that users may think of DMs as a destination for relationships, while the app increasingly connects messaging to a Reels-led browsing experience.
For now, the practical answer is account-specific: if your layout changed, find messages in the bottom bar and check whether Instagram gave you an opt-out. Instagram has signaled a broader navigation direction, but reports do not establish that every user has the same interface—or that every user can switch back.
