Instagram AI Studio is Meta’s no-code tool for creating conversational AI characters. You can start from a template or describe an AI yourself, then set its name, avatar, personality, knowledge, tone, boundaries, welcome message and example questions. You can keep it for yourself, share it with Close Friends, or make it available to everyone. Public characters may also be discoverable in Messenger, WhatsApp and on the web, depending on your settings.
Access is not universal: Instagram says custom AIs are not available to every account. The most dependable creation route documented currently is the desktop website at aistudio.instagram.com; mobile menus and eligibility vary by account, region, language and rollout.
What Instagram AI Studio is
The product is officially called Meta AI Studio, with an Instagram-specific creation and discovery experience. It lets you configure a character’s behavior and information; it is not a software-development environment and does not mean you are training a new foundation model.
Custom character AIs
A custom character can be built around a hobby, fictional identity or narrowly defined task, such as a recipe helper, travel planner, photography coach, trivia host, caption assistant or brainstorming partner.

Creator AIs
Eligible creators can make an AI based on their public-facing identity, content, preferences, links and selected boundaries. Meta describes creator AIs as an extension that can answer common direct-message questions and story replies; responses are labeled as AI-generated. Ordinary character creation does not automatically grant this creator-reply functionality.
What it is not
- It is not a guaranteed factual expert or licensed medical, legal, financial or psychological adviser.
- It is not a private inbox that lets the human creator read every visitor’s conversation.
- It is not the same product as the standard Meta AI assistant in Instagram.
- It is not necessarily a CRM, team inbox, lead-routing or analytics platform.
Instagram warns that custom-AI answers may be inaccurate or inappropriate and should not be used for important decisions. See Meta’s overview at ai.meta.com/ai-studio.
Is Instagram AI Studio available to everyone?
No. Instagram’s Help Centre currently says custom AIs are not available to everyone. Meta began its initial rollout in the United States, but current access is account-specific rather than guaranteed by country alone.
- The feature may not have reached your account or region.
- Your language or app version may be unsupported.
- You may be looking in the mobile app while your account’s creation route is desktop-only.
- Creator-AI functions can require separate eligibility.
- A character or edit may still be under review.
Try the desktop route first. In the app, Meta has also documented an access path through a new message and AI chats; labels can differ by version and rollout. Instagram’s access guidance is at Instagram Help Centre.

How to create an AI character on Instagram
- On a computer, open aistudio.instagram.com and log in to the Instagram account that should own the AI.
- Select Create an AI, then Get started.
- Choose a template or Custom AI.
- Describe the character in plain language and select Next.
- Review the generated name and tagline.
- Choose an avatar, generate more options or edit the avatar prompt.
- Select Create AI.
- Review and edit the personality settings, including knowledge, introduction, capabilities, tone, boundaries, opening message and example questions.
- Use the preview chat to test realistic requests, misunderstandings and unsafe prompts.
- Choose an audience: Everyone, Close Friends or Only me.
- Set discoverability and whether the AI appears on your Instagram profile.
- Select Done to submit it for review.
Meta’s detailed creation instructions are documented at Instagram Help Centre. A mobile AI chats entry point is described in Meta’s launch announcement at about.fb.com, but it is not a universal replacement for the desktop workflow.
How to write a reliable character prompt
A narrow job, explicit limits and an uncertainty rule usually produce more useful behavior than a long list of vague personality adjectives. Use this pattern:
You are [character identity]. Your purpose is to help [audience] with [specific tasks]. Speak in a [tone] style. You should [desired behaviors]. Do not [prohibited behaviors]. When you are uncertain, [uncertainty rule]. Ask [clarifying-question behavior] before giving advice about [sensitive area].
Example:
You are TrailMate, a friendly hiking-planning assistant for beginners. Help users choose day hikes, prepare gear checklists, understand basic trail etiquette and plan around weather information supplied by the user. Use concise, encouraging language. Never claim to know current trail closures unless the user provides a verified source. Do not give medical, emergency or dangerous-route advice as a certainty. Ask for location, experience level, distance preference and accessibility needs before recommending a hike.

- Define one primary audience and a limited set of tasks.
- Tell it when to ask follow-up questions.
- Require it to acknowledge uncertainty instead of inventing facts.
- Specify refusals and safe redirects for sensitive subjects.
- Include examples of good answers and avoid unauthorized impersonation.

Who can see and use your AI?
Everyone
Everyone on Instagram can see and use the AI. Depending on discoverability settings, it can also be shared or found through Messenger and WhatsApp.
Close Friends
Only accounts on your Instagram Close Friends list can see and use it. You can optionally show it on your profile to that audience.
Only me
Only you can see and interact with the AI.
Important: The AI audience is separate from the privacy setting of the underlying Instagram account. Making an AI available to Everyone does not make your account public, and a private account does not by itself describe every AI audience or discoverability choice.

What happens after publishing?
A new AI is reviewed before other people can chat with it. Instagram says you will receive a notification when it becomes available. Edits can also require review. The AI Studio Handbook says the last approved version may remain live while a newer edit is awaiting approval, so a change is not necessarily immediate.
How to edit an existing AI
- Open aistudio.instagram.com on a computer.
- Select Your AIs.
- Use the edit control beside the character.
- Change its personality, knowledge, introduction, capabilities, avatar, name or tagline.
- Test the revision in the preview panel.
- Review the audience and discoverability settings.
- Use the available save, Create or Publish control.
- Wait for review if Instagram requests it.
Exact button labels can change as Meta updates the dashboard; the web path remains the reference documented by Instagram at this Help Centre page.
Can the creator read other people’s chats?
For an ordinary custom AI, Instagram says the human creator does not have access to chats other people have with that AI. Meta identifies an exception for creator AIs based on the creator themselves when they are used to respond to the creator’s personal messages. Do not promise visitors that conversations are confidential or handled like a private conversation with the human creator.

According to Instagram’s stated policy, Meta uses interactions with AIs to improve AI at Meta. If an AI cannot answer a query, Meta may share the messages sent to it and general information such as the user’s region with selected partners to improve results. Location information may be used to make answers more relevant, and profile information such as age, gender and interests inferred from activity across Meta products may be used to personalize AI interactions. Review the current disclosures through Instagram’s Help Centre, Privacy Centre and AI Terms before handling sensitive information.

Custom AIs must follow Instagram Community Standards, Meta’s Terms of Use and AI Studio Policies. Content that violates platform rules may be removed, and the account can be restricted or disabled.
- Do not design the AI to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
- Do not present legal or financial instructions as guaranteed professional advice.
- Do not encourage self-harm, hate, extremist activity, fraud or impersonation.
- Do not request passwords, payment details or government identification numbers.
- Use extra safeguards for children and other vulnerable users.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot find AI Studio”
- Open the desktop site while logged into the intended Instagram account.
- Update Instagram and check the new-message area for AI chats.
- Check account eligibility, language and region, then allow for staged rollout.
- Use Instagram’s support channels rather than unofficial APKs, extensions or “unlock” services.
“My AI exists, but nobody can use it”
Check whether it is set to Only me, limited to Close Friends, hidden by discoverability settings or still awaiting review. A policy review can also delay or prevent availability.
“My edit reverted”
The last approved version may still be live while the new version is being reviewed.
“It gives wrong answers”
Narrow its purpose, add explicit uncertainty rules, supply examples and prohibit unsupported claims. A confident response is not evidence that the answer is verified.

Is Instagram AI Studio worth using?
Start with AI Studio when you want a no-code, Instagram-native character for discovery, community interaction, entertainment or a lightweight extension of a creator identity. Keep the purpose narrow and test it privately before opening access.
Be cautious when the AI will handle sensitive questions, personal data, children, vulnerable users or business-critical facts, or when visitors could mistake it for the real person. Choose Manychat for structured Instagram marketing automation and lead capture. Choose Botpress when you need a configurable agent with knowledge bases, integrations, human escalation and team controls. A third-party platform is unnecessary if all you need is a basic character that Meta’s native tool already provides.
