The latest evidence points to continued growth in creator advertising, but there is no single global influencer-marketing number or universal ROI multiple. IAB projects $37 billion in U.S. creator-economy ad spend for 2025 and expects $44 billion in 2026. In Northwestern Medill’s June 2026 survey, 80% of surveyed senior marketers planned to increase creator budgets. Effectiveness depends on what is measured: IPA’s UK database found influencer activity close to average for short-term sales and stronger in its long-term analysis, while other studies measure marketer perceptions, reported outcomes or modeled contribution rather than causal sales lift.
How to read the 2026 influencer-marketing numbers
These figures do not measure the same thing. IAB estimates intentional U.S. creator advertising; Northwestern Medill surveys marketers already investing in creator programs; CreatorIQ surveys marketing leaders about paid-media performance; IPA analyzes campaign effectiveness; Circana describes marketing-mix and retail-data analysis; and Sprout Social surveys consumers and social professionals. Geography, sample, time horizon, spend definition and measurement method should accompany every headline statistic.
“Creator marketing” is retained where a source uses that term. IAB’s creator-economy ad-spend measure is not total creator revenue, total influencer-marketing revenue or the value of the entire creator economy. It excludes broader estimates that may include subscriptions, tips, merchandise, affiliate links and incidental ad placements.
U.S. creator advertising spend is still rising
IAB’s 2025 outlook provides the clearest current spending series, but its 2026 figure remains a projection rather than a finalized result.

| Measure | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. creator-economy ad spend, 2021 | $13.9 billion | IAB estimate |
| U.S. creator-economy ad spend, 2024 | $29.5 billion | IAB estimate; more than double the 2021 level |
| U.S. creator-economy ad spend, 2025 | $37 billion projected | IAB projection; 26% year-over-year growth |
| U.S. creator-economy ad spend, 2026 | $44 billion expected | IAB outlook published in 2025; projection, not a completed-year total |
| Broader media-industry growth comparison | 5.7% | IAB’s referenced September 2025 comparison |
| Advertisers calling creators a “must buy” | 48% | IAB 2025 survey result |
The IAB survey also shows why “spend” does not automatically mean one objective. Reported campaign goals included awareness (43%), reaching new audiences (41%), reputation and trust (35%), and online sales or conversions (32%). Overall ROI was the top creator-campaign KPI for 40% of respondents.
What marketers are doing in 2026
Budgets are moving upward and programs are becoming continuous
Northwestern University Medill and the Retail Analytics Council surveyed 209 senior marketing decision-makers in June 2026. Among these respondents, 80% said their organization was increasing creator budgets for 2026; 25% planned an increase above 10%, while 3% planned cuts.
Creator activity was usually not limited to occasional launches. Ninety-one percent reported an always-on element: 62% used a hybrid of continuous and campaign-based activity, and 29% described their program as fully continuous. The remaining 9% were mostly campaign-based.
Reported outcomes span brand and sales metrics
When Northwestern respondents reported where creator programs had an impact, brand sentiment was selected by 60%, awareness by 58% and sales by 49%. In a separate question about where creator recommendations influence business, conversion and loyalty each received 55%. These are survey responses about reported impact, not independently measured sales-lift estimates.

In the same Northwestern survey, 44% named creators as the most-trusted source, compared with 34% for social-media ads and 22% for celebrities. The behaviors associated with trust were clear product information (62%), transparency about paid relationships (60%), category expertise (54%) and honest comparison (51%).
Paid distribution is part of the creator workflow
Ninety-two percent said they ran creator content in social advertising. Seventy-three percent did so directly, and respondents reported allocating 11% to 40% of influencer budgets to boosting. This makes creator work relevant to paid-media operations as well as organic publishing.

AI investment is high, but the tool stack is fragmented
Among Northwestern respondents, 93% had invested in AI and 84% intended to invest again in 2027. Eighty-six percent used at least two tools, only 11% used one consolidated platform, and 90% wanted less complexity.
Measurement practice is uneven
Brand-lift measurement was reported by 61% of Northwestern respondents, while 30% reported data-driven attribution. Those percentages describe the surveyed marketers, not the industry as a whole, and illustrate why a claimed result should identify its method.

IPA effectiveness database: short-term and long-term results differ
The IPA database covers 220 campaigns from 144 brands, 36 sectors and 28 markets, representing more than £133 million in influencer spend. The specific UK comparisons below use smaller subsets.
| IPA measure | Result | Basis and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term influencer ROI index | 99 | UK results from 59 campaigns; all-channel average is indexed at 100 |
| Short-term sales contribution | 4.5% | UK campaign analysis |
| Long-term influencer ROI index | 151 | UK results from 18 campaigns; index, not a cash-return multiple |
| Long-term sales contribution | 6.2% | UK campaign analysis |
| Long-term multiplier | 3.35 | IPA result; linear television comparison was 3.27 |
The short-term index of 99 is effectively near the all-channel benchmark of 100, whereas the long-term index of 151 is higher in this dataset. The campaign counts differ substantially, so the results should not be treated as a single blended benchmark. IPA also notes substantial variation and identifies brand–influencer fit and creative quality as important factors.
Creator content is often treated as paid creative
CreatorIQ and Sapio Research surveyed 100 marketing leaders in the United States and United Kingdom in May 2026. Seventy-seven percent said creator content outperformed traditional branded ad creative, including 43% who said it performed significantly better. Respondents said creator content outpaced traditional creative on click-through rate (65%), conversion rate (58%) and CPM efficiency (50%). These are reported marketer assessments, not randomized causal comparisons.

Consumers do not judge creators by follower count alone
Sprout Social’s 2026 report page summarizes research from 2,250 consumers in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia, plus nearly 300 social professionals. Only 17% of consumers said they checked a creator’s follower count before deciding to engage.
The same research found that 40% discovered products or services through employee-generated content monthly, while 61% believed companies should provide employees extra compensation for social promotion. Employee advocacy therefore appears in consumer behavior alongside conventional influencer activity, but it is a distinct channel.
There is room to scale, according to Circana
Circana’s June 22, 2026 release said 75% of brands had room to scale influencer investment. The finding came from analysis using marketing-mix modeling and proprietary retail data; the public release does not provide the full report’s sample or a detailed estimate. It is best read as a market-measurement conclusion, not a universal performance rate.
A practical framework for using these statistics
- Define the geography and population. Label whether a number describes U.S. ad spend, UK campaigns, U.S. and UK marketers, or consumers across three countries.
- Name the metric. Separate planned budget growth, reported impact, an ROI index, modeled contribution, media efficiency and a cash-return calculation.
- Set the outcome window. Short-term sales and long-term brand or sales effects can point in different directions, as the IPA results demonstrate.
- Match the measurement method to the objective. Use brand-lift studies for awareness or sentiment, attribution with clearly defined assumptions for response, and marketing-mix or matched-market approaches for broader incremental effects.
- Include paid amplification and rights. If creator assets are boosted, report the media spend, usage period and placement separately from the creator fee.
- Report uncertainty and sample size. A perception survey of 100 leaders, a 209-person marketer survey and an 18-campaign effectiveness subset are useful for different questions and should not be merged into one benchmark.
What the 2026 evidence supports
Creator advertising is becoming a planned, continuously operated part of media programs, with rising U.S. ad-spend projections and widespread use of creator assets in paid social. Marketers report benefits across awareness, sentiment, conversion and sales, but those responses are not interchangeable with independently demonstrated incrementality. The best-supported conclusion is not that influencer marketing always wins; it is that investment decisions become more credible when the campaign objective, time horizon, audience, rights, spend and measurement method are stated together.
