Verdict: the InfiRay P2 Pro and TOPDON TC001 are close technical matches, but they solve different problems. Choose the InfiRay P2 Pro for the smallest possible phone-connected thermal camera and close-up electronics work; choose the TOPDON TC001 for its 50 cm cable, Android/Windows positioning, and TCView desktop workflow.
Neither should be treated as a precision radiometric instrument without careful technique. Both are more dependable for finding thermal patterns and hotspots than for declaring an exact surface temperature under unknown emissivity, reflections, distance, and calibration conditions.
What these two thermal cameras are
Both products are compact thermal-camera modules rather than standalone imagers. The camera draws power from a connected phone, tablet, or computer, while that host supplies the display, battery, storage, controls, and recording functions. This keeps the hardware small and comparatively affordable, but makes the buying decision depend on more than sensor specifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore ordering, confirm the connector edition, operating-system support, Android OTG support where applicable, app availability, adapter data compatibility, and clearance around your phone case. Neither manufacturer’s published information should be interpreted as a guarantee that every modern phone or tablet will work.

Design: pocketability versus positioning flexibility
InfiRay P2 Pro
The P2 Pro’s approximately 27×18×9.8 mm body and roughly 9 g weight are its defining advantages. It can stay in a phone bag or tool pouch without becoming another substantial piece of equipment. For quick checks, the camera can be attached to a phone and used almost immediately.
Its detachable macro lens is more useful than a cosmetic extra. It changes how close-up subjects are framed, making it easier to inspect PCB traces, component groups, connectors, and other small areas. It does not increase the 256×192 sensor’s resolution or make the device a microscope, and it does not guarantee more accurate component-temperature readings. Its value is improved close-range framing and practical visual separation.
The trade-off is that a very small direct-attach module leaves less room for awkward connector orientations, cable strain, and thick phone cases. Check the exact version and physical clearance before buying.
TOPDON TC001
The TC001 is larger at approximately 71×42×14 mm and weighs about 30 g. It is less pocketable, but its conventional module shape and included 50 cm multifunction cable make it easier to hold the camera away from the phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That separation helps when the phone case blocks direct attachment, when the phone needs to remain in a convenient viewing position, or when the camera must be placed into a cramped location. TOPDON nevertheless warns that not every phone or tablet case will fit the TC001 connection.
TOPDON lists a 2 m drop/impact/vibration specification and an operating range of −10°C to +50°C. Those claims do not make the TC001 waterproof, industrially certified, or suitable for unrestricted harsh-field use.

Image quality and what 256×192 can reveal
On paper, the two cameras are extremely close: both use 256×192 thermal imaging, 12 μm pixels, approximately 40 mK NETD in the comparison, a listed 25 Hz frame rate, and an 8–14 μm band. Lower NETD generally indicates a greater ability to distinguish small temperature differences, but NETD alone does not determine the quality of a thermal image. Optics, focus, processing, scene contrast, distance, and calibration also matter.
The original hands-on comparison found broadly similar image quality, video quality, and same-scene readings. It also reported that video generally tracked the advertised frame rate except during periodic calibration pauses. A 25 Hz stream mainly makes movement and live inspection feel smoother; it is not automatically more accurate than a slower camera.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A 256×192 core is useful for locating warm components, overloaded connections, missing insulation patterns, hot bearings, suspicious fuses, and other temperature differences. It cannot reveal every tiny component distinctly from every working distance. The camera’s field of view is broad enough for walls, equipment, and assemblies, while the P2 Pro’s macro accessory is valuable when the target occupies only a small part of the scene.
Electronics and PCB inspection
This is the clearest case for the P2 Pro. The macro lens makes close-up framing of boards and components more practical, especially when the goal is to see which part is heating relative to surrounding components.
Thermal imaging can help identify an unexpected hotspot, a shorted component, an overloaded regulator, or an uneven power-distribution pattern. The useful question is often “what is warmer than its neighbours?” rather than “what exact temperature does this component have?”
Keep the lens and target orientation consistent, avoid touching or obstructing the camera, and compare equivalent components under the same operating conditions. A macro image still represents surface infrared radiation; it does not directly reveal a component’s internal junction temperature. Confirm electrical conclusions with appropriate meters, schematics, current limits, and safe bench procedures.

For home inspection, the TC001 has a slight practical edge because its cable makes it easier to hold the phone in one place while aiming the camera into a corner, behind equipment, or along a wall. Either camera can help reveal temperature patterns associated with missing insulation, drafts, overloaded electrical connections, blocked airflow, or uneven heating.
For automotive and workshop use, the TC001’s Windows support and TCView application are meaningful advantages. The cable is also convenient around an engine bay or machinery. The P2 Pro remains attractive when the camera must be carried constantly or used for quick checks.
Thermal images show surface conditions, not the exact temperature inside a pipe, wall, battery, connector, or engine component. A cool-looking patch can be caused by airflow or evaporation, while a reflective surface can show reflected heat. Do not use either camera as the sole basis for a safety-critical electrical, mechanical, medical, or industrial decision, and do not inspect energized equipment beyond your training and safe working procedures.

Software and desktop workflow
The original comparison found Android applications for both cameras. TOPDON additionally supplied the Windows-based TCView application, giving the TC001 a clearer desktop-analysis position. The comparison judged TOPDON’s interface more intuitive, while the P2 Pro exposed more options through submenus. Image and video results were broadly similar.
TOPDON’s support documentation describes these workflows, although labels and locations may change with later app releases:

- Temperature correction: App → Personal Information → Temperature Correction.
- Export monitoring data: App → Temperature Monitoring → select a temperature-monitor record → Export.
- Create a report: select an image → Report → choose parameters → generate, save, or share.
- Open the manual in TCView: File → Help → User Manual.
The TOPDON TC001/TC002 support guide documents calibration, emissivity correction, monitoring, export, and reporting. Record the application version, phone model, operating-system version, connector, and adapter when documenting a result; those details can affect the workflow.
Temperature readings: the important limitation
Both cameras are listed with a −20°C to 550°C measurement range and a stated accuracy of the maximum of ±2°C or ±2%. Both can display values in 0.1°C increments. That last figure is a display increment, not proof of 0.1°C accuracy.
A thermal camera detects infrared radiation from a surface. The reading can be affected by emissivity, reflected heat, distance, atmospheric conditions, calibration state, focus, and the material itself. Shiny metal, glass, wet surfaces, and reflective insulation are particularly easy to misread. The manufacturer’s accuracy figure applies under stated conditions; it should not be generalized to every surface and temperature.

The original reviewer found similar readings from the P2 Pro and TC001 but was not fully convinced by absolute accuracy under automatic calibration. A FLIR ONE Pro appeared more accurate in that particular same-scene comparison. That is a reported observation, not a universal ranking of all units or all conditions.
For diagnostic work, use a consistent distance and angle, set a sensible emissivity value, avoid reflective targets, and record ambient conditions. Where an absolute number matters, compare against a suitable reference with known surface emissivity or use a properly validated contact instrument. Treat thermal contrast and repeatable patterns as more trustworthy than an isolated decimal reading.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calibration, ghost images, and periodic pauses
When a ghost image appears or readings seem implausible, stop interpreting the current frame. For the TC001, TOPDON’s support path is:
- Open the app’s image-calibration control.
- Run the calibration.
- Wait for the image to stabilize.
- Recheck the target.
- Only then compare it with a reference, provided emissivity and measurement conditions are controlled.
Periodic calibration pauses can interrupt the live view. The original testing observed that the cameras generally followed the advertised frame rate except during these intervals. This is a normal consideration for thermal imagers, especially when following a moving target; it is not automatically evidence of a hardware failure.

PC and open-source use
The original technical investigation reported that both devices identified as USB cameras when connected to a PC. It found a 256×384 stream structure in which one 256×192 area contained image data and another contained temperature data, and it used programs such as guvcview on Ubuntu.
Enthusiasts also created open-source software through reverse engineering to display live feeds without the vendors’ closed-source applications. This should be treated as an experimental or developer workflow, not guaranteed plug-and-play support. The data format, repositories, operating-system compatibility, and permissions may change. The cited testing does not establish official desktop support for the P2 Pro; TCView support is the clearer documented desktop option for the TC001.
Which one should you buy?
| Your priority | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest camera for everyday carry | P2 Pro | About 9 g and dramatically smaller |
| PCB and close-up electronics inspection | P2 Pro | Detachable macro lens |
| Windows desktop work | TC001 | TCView support |
| Camera positioned away from the phone | TC001 | Included 50 cm cable |
| Phone-case clearance | TC001, conditionally | Cable can solve direct-connection problems, but case compatibility still needs checking |
| General hotspot detection | Tie | Core specifications are closely matched |
| Certified quantitative thermography | Neither by default | Measurement technique and validation matter more than the display range |
Choose the InfiRay P2 Pro if:
- You want a camera that can disappear into a pocket or tool pouch.
- You inspect electronics and will benefit from the macro lens.
- You prefer fast phone snapshots over desktop reporting.
- You accept a more consumer-oriented application workflow.
- You have confirmed the correct connector and phone compatibility.
Choose the TOPDON TC001 if:
- You need a Windows or TCView workflow.
- You want to hold the camera away from the phone.
- The included cable helps with a phone case or difficult inspection angle.
- You value monitoring, export, and report features.
- A larger, more conventional module is acceptable.
Neither is ideal if:
- You need a standalone screen, battery, or field-independent instrument.
- You require highly reliable absolute-temperature measurements without validating the method.
- You need waterproof, industrially certified equipment.
- You need guaranteed iPhone compatibility without checking the exact model, connector, adapter, and app.
Alternatives worth considering
A newer compact thermal camera with manual focus may be a better fit if close-up work is central. Later coverage describes the Thermal Master P3 as combining manual focus, a macro lens, and 256×192 native resolution; the P4-class products add newer dual-lens designs. Verify current specifications, platform support, price, and availability for the exact model before buying.
The FLIR ONE Pro is worth considering for buyers who prioritize a recognised thermal brand, established software, and mainstream support. The original comparison reported lower resolution and a much lower frame rate than the P2 Pro and TC001, but better absolute-temperature behaviour in one same-scene comparison. That observation should not be treated as a universal performance result.
The Seek Thermal CompactPRO may appeal to readers already invested in Seek’s software ecosystem. The original comparison listed 320×240 resolution but lower sensitivity and sub-9-Hz video, along with a substantially higher historical price. Confirm current figures and availability.
Finally, a standalone handheld thermal imager remains the better category when you need its own screen and battery, easier field handling, or more specialised measurement documentation.
Buying checklist
- Confirm USB-C versus Lightning or other connector edition.
- Confirm the phone supports external USB devices and that the app supports its operating system.
- Check whether the phone case blocks the connector; for the TC001, confirm the included cable is usable with the case.
- Verify current app availability and software version.
- Check current price, stock, currency, and included accessories at the retailer; the original review’s roughly $200–$300 range was historical, not a current quote.
- Decide whether macro close-ups or cable reach will matter more than minimum size.
- If exact temperature matters, plan how you will control emissivity, reflections, distance, calibration, and reference measurements.
For current TC001 availability and model information, start with TOPDON’s mobile-device thermal-imager collection and the thermal-imager collection. Do not assume newer TC001-family or dual-lens products share the original TC001’s specifications.
Final verdict
The sensor-level contest is effectively a tie in the tested comparison. Both offer 256×192 thermal imaging, similar sensitivity claims, 25 Hz video, a broad field of view, and a wide stated measurement range.
The better purchase depends on workflow. The InfiRay P2 Pro is the more compelling pocket camera and the stronger choice for PCB work because of its macro lens. The TOPDON TC001 is the more flexible workshop tool because its cable separates the camera from the phone and its TCView software supports a clearer Windows/reporting workflow.
Whichever you choose, use it primarily to locate heat patterns and anomalies. Exact temperatures require controlled measurement technique, and neither product’s 0.1°C display increment turns it into a laboratory instrument.
