Gmail can send many plus-address variations to one inbox, but that does not give you unlimited separate accounts or private, revocable aliases. For a personal Gmail address, you can use tags such as [email protected] to sort incoming mail. Google Workspace supports up to 30 alternate addresses per user at no extra cost, according to Google’s current documentation. The right option depends on whether you need filters, a business address, another login, or more privacy.
What “infinite Gmail aliases” can mean
The phrase covers several different features. Some only change the address shown to a sender; others route mail to one inbox, create a distinct account, or conceal your real address. These methods are not interchangeable.

Use plus addressing for signup labels
Add a plus sign and a tag before @gmail.com:
[email protected]For example, if your address is [email protected], you can try [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. These are variations for delivery to the same inbox—not new accounts, inboxes, or Google identities. A useful tag identifies where you used the address; avoid putting sensitive details in it, since the tag may be visible to the recipient.
To check a particular service, send a test message to the variation and confirm that it arrives. Plus addressing is commonly used for this kind of sorting, but a signup form can reject the +, or a service may strip or normalize the suffix. Some services treat tagged and untagged forms as the same address. So a plus address is not a reliable way to make multiple accounts, get around an account limit, or create a distinct password-recovery identity. Follow the service’s account rules.

Filter messages sent to a plus address
- Send a test message to the tagged address, or open a message you received there.
- In Gmail, use the message’s More menu and choose Filter messages like these, or create a filter in Gmail settings.
- Match the recipient address shown for that message, then choose an action: apply a label such as Receipts or Newsletters, skip the inbox, mark as read, star, forward, or delete.
- Send another test message and check that the filter applies.
If a filter based on the visible To: address misses mail, inspect the message’s full headers. A mailing list or forwarding service may rewrite the recipient information. Create the filter from a message that arrived, and check which address appears in the received message’s headers rather than assuming every sender preserves the original plus address.
Plus tags are not individually revocable. If one starts attracting spam, filter or delete messages matching it and unsubscribe from legitimate unwanted mail. For future signups, use an alias service that lets you disable an address.
Dots do not create new personal Gmail addresses
For a personal @gmail.com address, Google ignores dots in the username. If the address is [email protected], forms such as [email protected] reach the same account. Google says the dotted versions belong to the same user; they do not create new mailboxes, logins, or accounts. See Google’s explanation of dots in Gmail addresses.

Do not extend this rule to every address that uses Gmail’s interface. Dots can make a difference in organizational addresses on custom domains, such as a Workspace address at example.com. Dotted forms are not a useful privacy or filtering strategy.
Google Workspace aliases are real alternate addresses, but limited
If your organization uses Google Workspace and controls a domain, an administrator can add an alternate address such as [email protected] to a user. Google documents a limit of up to 30 aliases per user at no extra cost. Mail sent to an alias goes to that user’s primary inbox. An alias is not a separate Google Account and cannot independently sign in to services such as Drive. Details and current limits are in Google’s Workspace alias help.
The administrator path is Admin console → Directory → Users → select the user → Add alternate emails. The administrator adds the address and it routes to that user. An alias already associated with an existing account cannot simply be assigned as another user’s alternate address.

Receiving mail and sending from an address are separate capabilities. To present an alternate address in the From field, configure Gmail’s Send mail as settings and complete verification if requested. Google explains the setup in its guide to sending from a different address or alias. A plus variation is not automatically a polished, independent sender identity, and recipients may see the primary identity or an “on behalf of” relationship in some configurations.

- User alias: appropriate when one person should receive mail addressed to a role such as
billing@. - Google Group: consider this when multiple people should receive and manage a team address.
- Delegated mailbox: use delegation when another person needs access to a user’s mailbox.
- Separate user account: use this when an address needs its own login, Google services, settings, or account lifecycle.
A user alias is not a shared mailbox: by default, it routes to one user. For team access, consider Google’s mailbox delegation options or an appropriate Group setup instead of routing a team address to one person and treating it as shared.
Aliases do not guarantee separate website accounts
A service may reject plus signs, remove the tag, normalize dotted addresses, or check whether the underlying Gmail address has already registered. It may also require a phone number, payment method, identity check, or other verification. Even if a confirmation message arrives, the service may store a canonicalized address that does not behave like a separate recovery identity.

Do not rely on address variations to evade account limits, bans, trials, referral rules, or anti-abuse controls. They may not work, and using them that way can violate the service’s terms.

A plus address such as [email protected] exposes the underlying address: the sender can see or infer [email protected]. It is handy for sorting and spotting where a message was addressed, but it is not strong email privacy.
A masked alias uses a different address that forwards to your real mailbox. Depending on the provider, it can conceal the real address, be disabled if it leaks or attracts spam, and support replies through the alias. Proton, for example, describes its hide-my-email aliases as forwarding addresses that conceal the mailbox address and can be disabled or deleted. Availability and plan limits vary; consult the provider’s current plan details rather than assuming a particular allowance.

A custom domain with forwarding or catch-all routing offers another route if you want addresses you control independently of a Gmail username. It requires managing the domain and mail routing; a catch-all can also collect mail sent to typos or guessed addresses. If you send mail from your own domain, configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC correctly to support authentication and delivery.
Which option should you use?
- Just want to sort signups in an existing Gmail inbox? Try plus addressing, if the site accepts it, and create a filter.
- Need the sender not to see your main address, or want to turn off one address later? Use a masked alias service.
- Need a recognizable address on a business domain that routes to one employee? Use a Workspace alias or another domain email service.
- Need several people to manage a role address? Evaluate a Google Group, delegation, or a shared-inbox arrangement.
- Need an independent Google login, Drive, or account settings? Create a separate user account; an alias will not provide those.
- Need arbitrary addresses at your own domain? Consider domain-based forwarding or catch-all routing, with the associated administration and security work.
Troubleshooting
A website says the plus address is invalid
Try your untagged address if you are comfortable using it, or use a masked alias or custom-domain address. Create a separate account only when the service permits it. Changing dots or plus tags repeatedly is not a dependable fix for a site’s account controls.
The message arrives, but the filter does not run
Open the message, inspect the visible recipient and full headers, and create a filter from that received message. Check whether the sender stripped the plus suffix or sent through a list or forwarding system that rewrote recipient details. Test the revised filter with another message.

You can receive at an alias but cannot send from it
Receiving does not automatically configure the From address. Add it in Gmail’s Send mail as settings and complete any verification. For a Workspace address, ask the administrator to confirm the address and sending configuration. For a team address, use a Group or delegation rather than treating a user alias as shared.
You want to turn off one address
Gmail does not let you disable an individual plus or dotted variation. Filter or delete messages addressed to the exposed variation, and unsubscribe where appropriate. A masked alias is a better fit when individual revocation matters.
You received mail meant for someone else
Dots do not create separate personal Gmail accounts, so a dotted variation is not evidence that another person’s account is connected to yours. Google notes that someone can mistakenly or improperly use a dotted form when signing up for a service. If the message is irrelevant, notify the sender when appropriate; report suspicious messages as spam or phishing. See Google’s guidance on dotted addresses.
