SNH-gen is a security-product detection label, not a complete diagnosis. It may describe a blocked phishing page or script, a suspicious local file, browser abuse, or a heuristic detection that needs further review. The exact URL, file path, product, suffix—such as [Phish] or [Trj]—and action taken matter more than the words “SNH-gen” alone.
The specific Malwarebytes forum thread named in the original title could not be independently verified, so its author, final logs, and remediation should not be treated as confirmed. The safe approach is to establish whether the alert was only a blocked web event or evidence of a local, persistent compromise.
What does “SNH-gen” mean?
“SNH-gen” should be treated as a vendor detection name or heuristic family label. It does not, by itself, identify one specific virus or prove that malware executed on the computer.

Security products may display related-looking alerts in different contexts. A Chrome user report describes recurring Other:SNH-gen [Phish] warnings while browsing, while another malware-removal discussion mentions Script:SNH-gen [Tjn] detections. These reports show that the label can appear alongside different classifications; they do not prove that every SNH-gen alert has the same cause.

Open the security product’s detection history or report and record:
- The product name and version.
- The complete detection name and suffix.
- The detected URL, file path, process, or browser.
- The date and time of the event.
- Whether the item was blocked, quarantined, removed, or reported as unresolved.
- Whether the event was classified as web protection, a script, a file, or another type of detection.
Useful examples of the label appearing in browser and script-related reports include this Chrome community report and this related malware-removal discussion. Neither is proof that a particular computer has an active infection.
Does an SNH-gen alert mean the PC is infected?

A clean Malwarebytes scan is reassuring, but it does not prove that saved passwords, browser cookies, synchronized extensions, or online accounts are safe. Conversely, a blocked URL does not automatically mean the computer was compromised.
Why does the warning keep returning?
Repeated alerts do not necessarily mean that the same malware is hiding in Windows. Common explanations include:

- You repeatedly visit the same compromised website or advertising network.
- A deceptive site was allowed to send browser notifications.
- An unwanted extension redirects searches or opens tabs.
- Browser synchronization restores an extension or setting after cleanup.
- The browser restores the previous session and reopens the triggering page.
- A potentially unwanted application launches the browser.
- A startup entry, scheduled task, or script recreates the activity.
- The security product blocks a remote connection but cannot remove the webpage or advertisement generating it.
What to do immediately
- Do not interact with the warning. Do not call a number in a pop-up, install a “support” tool, allow notifications, enter passwords, provide card details, or disable security software to make the message disappear.
- Close the suspicious tab or browser window. If it will not close normally, end the browser from Windows Task Manager rather than clicking buttons inside the page.
- Save the detection details. Take a screenshot if useful, but also open the product’s history or report and copy the full URL, path, process, action, and remediation status.
- Update your security software. Run a normal, current-definition malware scan. Quarantine identified items, restart if requested, and run a follow-up scan.
- Do not stack real-time antivirus products. Review the product already installed instead of installing several overlapping security suites.
Check the browser before assuming Windows is infected
In Chrome, Edge, or another browser, open the settings area for site permissions or notifications and revoke permission for unfamiliar domains. Also review:
- Extensions you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Startup pages and the default search engine.
- Recently restored tabs or “continue where you left off” behavior.
- Suspicious downloads and browsing data.
- Browser synchronization, particularly if a removed extension returns.
Browser labels and menu locations vary by browser and version, so use the current settings search rather than relying on an old screenshot. Document important settings and extensions before resetting the browser. A reset can remove symptoms, but it will not fix an unwanted program or scheduled task outside the browser.
Check installed software and startup behavior
Review recently installed applications, startup applications, scheduled tasks, browser shortcut targets, proxy settings, DNS settings, and remote-access software. Look especially for unfamiliar “cleaners,” browser helpers, or programs installed around the time the warnings began.
Do not delete registry entries, scheduled tasks, services, or files simply because their names look unfamiliar. Windows and legitimate software use many entries that are not obvious to a nontechnical user. Persistent redirects, returning extensions, disabled security tools, or unexplained processes are good reasons to obtain expert log review.

How to collect logs for Malwarebytes help
A Malwarebytes malware-removal thread is a guided support process, not a place to run random repair commands. Helpers may request a Malwarebytes Threat Scan report, an AdwCleaner report, and diagnostic logs from Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST). A related resolved case shows the use of FRST.txt, Addition.txt, and, after an expert supplied a fix, Fixlog.txt.
These historical forum instructions refer to older Malwarebytes interfaces, so current buttons may have different names. Look in the product’s scan results, reports, or detection history for options to view and export a report. Malwarebytes also provides a Support Tool for collecting technical logs.
Before posting any report publicly, redact usernames and home-directory names, email addresses, license keys, unnecessary IP addresses, personal document paths, financial details, browser cookies, session tokens, and saved-password data. Do not run a copied FRST fix script or multiple unrelated “fix” tools. FRST remediation scripts are written for a particular system and should be used only when supplied by a trusted expert who has reviewed the logs. The resulting Fixlog.txt should be interpreted by that responder, not treated as an automatic certificate that the computer is safe.

When asking for help, include the Windows edition and version, security product and version, exact detection text, URL or path, action taken, recurrence pattern, browser, recent extensions or applications, and whether credentials were entered on the suspicious page.

When is expert review warranted?
Seek specialist help if the warning returns at every browser launch, a quarantined detection reappears, the browser redirects by itself, unknown extensions or programs return, security software is disabled, multiple scanners disagree, or suspicious startup tasks and services are present. Expert review is particularly important when the computer contains business, medical, financial, or other sensitive information.
For ordinary browser pop-ups alone, an immediate network disconnection is not always necessary. Disconnect temporarily if you see ransomware behavior, mass file encryption, active remote control, suspected credential theft, unauthorized network access, or a process making continuous unexplained outbound connections.
Passwords and account protection are separate from malware removal
Change passwords from a known-clean device if you typed credentials into the suspicious page, suspect password-stealing malware, stored passwords or cookies may have been exposed, notice unfamiliar sign-ins, or reused the password elsewhere.

When should you reinstall Windows?
A Windows reinstall is a last-resort recovery option, not the standard response to an SNH-gen warning. Consider it when malware persists despite expert-guided remediation, a rootkit or serious compromise is suspected, system integrity cannot be established, ransomware or extensive credential theft is confirmed, or the device protects high-value accounts and reliable cleanup is not possible.
Back up only personal files you trust, not unknown executables or scripts. Secure accounts separately before and after the reinstall. Reinstalling Windows cannot recover passwords or browser sessions that were already stolen.
Bottom line
The string SNH-gen tells you what the security product called an event—not whether malware successfully infected Windows. Start with the complete detection record, determine whether it was a blocked webpage or a local file, inspect browser permissions and extensions, scan with current definitions, and escalate with sanitized logs when the behavior persists. Treat any entered credentials or suspicious account activity as a separate security incident.
