On May 14, 2025, the X accounts of China’s Global Times and Turkey’s TRT World became accessible again in India after being withheld during the India–Pakistan military tensions. The restoration was partial: reports said the account of China’s Xinhua News Agency remained inaccessible. This was an account-level change on X, not evidence that the outlets’ websites, broadcasts or other services had been banned or restored.
What happened in May
Indian authorities reportedly ordered restrictions affecting thousands of X accounts around May 9, amid the India–Pakistan confrontation and Operation Sindoor. On May 14, reports said users in India could access the Global Times and TRT World accounts again. Xinhua’s account was still unavailable in India, according to Scroll’s report on the restoration.
The outlets are distinct: Global Times is an English-language Chinese newspaper affiliated with People’s Daily; Xinhua is China’s news agency; and TRT World is Turkey’s international broadcaster, associated with the public broadcaster TRT. Reports concerned their specific X accounts in India—not a blanket ban on the organizations.

Indian sources and reports linked the May restrictions to allegations that accounts were circulating false or misleading information, including Pakistani propaganda and material related to Indian military operations. NewsOnAir’s account of the restrictions described the alleged propaganda rationale.

That explanation should be understood as an allegation, not an independently established finding about every outlet or post. The available reports do not provide a complete public order listing all affected accounts and content, or a full evidentiary record for each restriction. They also do not establish that a particular post was the sole reason for any one account’s restriction.
A separate episode in July
The May restoration was not the same event as a later round of withholding on July 6–7. In July, X displayed a notice saying the accounts of Reuters, Global Times and TRT World had been withheld in India “in response to a legal demand.” Reuters’ main account was affected; reports said affiliated Reuters accounts, including Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Asia and Reuters China, remained accessible.

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said there was no current government requirement to withhold the Global Times or TRT World handles and that it was working with X to resolve the issue, as The Indian Express reported. A senior official was also reported to have suggested that an earlier instruction connected to Operation Sindoor may have been applied late or in error. That was an official-source explanation, not an independently verified account of X’s internal process. Reports said the affected accounts were restored within roughly a day; the exact timing varied by account and report.
X’s notice indicated a country-specific withholding tied to a legal demand, but it did not by itself establish which legal instrument caused the July restriction or prove that the Indian government had issued a new order at that moment. The discrepancy between the platform notice and the government’s statement was not conclusively resolved in the reports.

What was—and was not—restored
- May: Global Times and TRT World were reported accessible again in India; Xinhua reportedly remained inaccessible.
- July: Reuters, Global Times and TRT World were reported restored after a separate withholding episode.
- Scope: Neither episode establishes that every account covered by the broader restrictions was restored, or that any underlying order was formally withdrawn.
In both episodes, the reported change concerned access to particular accounts from India. It should not be described as the unblocking of entire news organizations or their websites, apps, television services, or accounts on other platforms.

During a military crisis, restrictions intended to curb alleged misinformation can also limit access to reporting and commentary. The sequence raises practical questions about how authorities identify targeted accounts, how platforms apply country-specific legal demands, and how users can distinguish a current restriction from delayed enforcement of an earlier one.

For readers, the key is to keep the timeline and the evidence separate: the May restoration was partial, and the July incident was a distinct episode involving Reuters as well as the two outlets named in the headline. Public reporting described competing explanations, but did not settle the precise legal and technical chain behind the restrictions.
