No. Deleting a sent email in Gmail does not unsend it or remove it from the recipient’s mailbox. To cancel a message, click or tap Undo immediately after sending, while Gmail’s short cancellation window is still open. Deleting removes your copy; Undo Send can stop the send before it is finalized.
What happens when you delete a sent Gmail message?
Once you send a message, deleting it from Sent affects the copy in your Gmail account—not a copy already delivered to the recipient. In Gmail, Delete normally moves the message to your Trash. The recipient may still read, forward, copy, or download the message and its attachments.
Messages in your Trash can generally be restored for up to 30 days unless you delete them forever or empty the Trash sooner. That 30-day period concerns your Gmail account; it does not determine how long the recipient keeps their copy. Google explains how deleting messages moves them to Trash.

Deleting from Sent is housekeeping, not a recall. If the message is still in Trash, you may be able to recover your own copy—but that does not change what the recipient received.

Delete, Undo Send, archive: what’s the difference?

Google’s Undo Send instructions describe a brief post-send cancellation opportunity—not a way to recall an email later.
How to unsend a Gmail message
On a computer
- Right after sending, look for the “Message sent” notification, usually at the lower-left of Gmail.
- Click Undo before the notification disappears.
Gmail cancels the send and returns the message to the compose window so you can edit or discard it. If the notification is gone, the ordinary Undo Send opportunity has ended.
In the Gmail app
After sending in the Gmail app, use the immediate post-send Undo control if it appears. On Android, Google’s documented workflow is to tap Undo in the Sent notification. The placement or appearance can vary by app version and device, so act as soon as you see it; there is no later recall control. Google’s Android instructions cover that workflow.

If you sent through Apple Mail, Outlook, or another third-party email app connected to Gmail, you may not get Gmail’s Undo control. Google recommends using the Gmail app or mail.google.com for its unsend workflow.
Set the Undo Send cancellation period
On Gmail for the web, you can choose a cancellation period of 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds:
- Open Gmail and click Settings.
- Click See all settings.
- In the General tab, find Undo Send.
- Choose a Send cancellation period.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.
Google lists the available periods. Choosing 30 seconds gives you a longer chance to cancel before Gmail finalizes the send; it does not let you recall a message for 30 seconds after delivery, or at any later time.

What if Undo has disappeared?
After the selected cancellation period expires, Gmail’s standard consumer Undo Send feature cannot be used. Deleting the message from Sent, moving it to Trash, or emptying Trash will not withdraw it from the recipient’s mailbox.

Send a clear correction or follow-up. If appropriate, ask the recipient to delete the original and any attachments, but there is no way to enforce that request through Gmail.
- Shared a file link? Review the file’s sharing settings and revoke or change access if you have permission to do so.
- Exposed a password, API key, or access token? Revoke or rotate it promptly; asking someone to delete the email is not enough to secure a credential.
- Sent personal or business data to the wrong person? Follow the relevant workplace security, privacy, compliance, or legal incident procedure.
Even if a recipient agrees to delete a message, they may already have read a notification preview, downloaded an attachment, forwarded or copied its contents, or captured a screenshot. Deleting your copy does not tell you whether they saw it.

- Open Trash in Gmail. If it is not listed in the sidebar, click More.
- Select the message.
- Click Move to and choose a destination, such as Sent or Inbox.
Gmail normally keeps messages in Trash for up to 30 days. After that, or after you choose Delete forever or Empty Trash now, the normal Gmail recovery path is gone. Google’s help page explains Trash and permanent deletion. Restoring a message only restores your copy; it does not unsend it.
Two cases that can cause confusion
If it was a draft
A draft has not been sent, so deleting it removes an unsent composition rather than recalling a delivered message. Discarded drafts cannot be recovered from Trash in the same way as ordinary messages. See Google’s guidance on missing Gmail messages.

Gmail’s ordinary Delete command does not control the recipient’s mailbox. Some specialized confidential-message controls, enterprise policies, or recipient-side administrator actions may work differently, but they are not the same as standard Gmail deletion and should not be treated as guaranteed recall. For a typical sent Gmail message, the practical rule is simple: only use Undo during the short cancellation window to stop the send.
