If you regret updating your Apple TV to tvOS 26, first work out whether you dislike the redesigned interface or the update caused a functional problem. The first is a matter of preference; the second may be fixable. Check for a newer 26.x update, restart the Apple TV, and troubleshoot the specific symptom before considering a reset. For most owners, Apple does not offer a supported way to downgrade to tvOS 18.
What changed in tvOS 26?
tvOS 26 brought a Liquid Glass redesign, more prominent cinematic poster art in the Apple TV app, easier profile selection, and Apple Music Sing features that can use an iPhone as a microphone. Apple also describes expanded child-profile and age-appropriate-content behavior and accessibility information in App Store listings. Some features vary by country or region. Apple’s tvOS 26 overview has the feature details.
The redesign is not identical across every Apple TV. Apple’s tvOS 26 release notes say the design updates do not extend to the first-generation Apple TV 4K and older models. Second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K owners may see the newer design. So comparisons between owners can reflect different hardware as well as different tastes.

If translucent elements are harder for you to read, animations feel distracting, or you simply prefer the familiar tvOS 18 layout, that is a legitimate reason to dislike the update—but it does not mean the device is broken. Avoid resetting or replacing a working Apple TV solely because the interface looks different.

First, check which version you have
Before troubleshooting, note whether your Apple TV is running a public release or a beta, and record its model and software version. A beta problem should not be assumed to affect the public release, and different Apple TV models have different design and recovery options.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System > Software Updates > Update Software.
- Install any update offered, following the on-screen instructions.
Apple’s update guide documents that menu path. As of August 2026, reporting identified tvOS 26.6 as a July release, but availability can differ by device and region. Check the Apple TV itself rather than assuming a particular version is available. Keep the device connected to power and do not interrupt an installation.
Fix the problem that is actually happening
The menus are laggy or the remote seems slow
Restart before changing settings or erasing the device. Use Settings > System > Restart, or press and hold the remote’s TV and Back/Menu buttons until the status light blinks rapidly. You can also unplug the Apple TV, wait five seconds, and reconnect it. Apple’s restart instructions cover these methods.
After a major update, temporary sluggishness does not by itself prove a lasting performance regression. If the problem persists, test the iPhone or iPad Apple TV Remote to distinguish an interface delay from a Siri Remote issue. If only one screen or app is slow, investigate that app before treating the whole system as faulty. User reports can flag symptoms, but they do not establish how common a problem is or prove that tvOS caused it.
Audio is ahead of or behind the picture
There is a confirmed, specific example: Apple says tvOS 26.0.1 addressed audio falling out of sync in certain streaming apps. That does not mean every lip-sync issue comes from tvOS, or that every app or audio setup is affected. Update to the newest version your device offers first.

Then isolate the audio path: compare the same program in Apple TV and another streaming app; try the TV’s own speakers instead of a receiver, soundbar, or HomePod; and, if possible, connect the Apple TV directly to the TV rather than routing it through a receiver. Check whether the issue occurs only with Dolby Atmos, Match Dynamic Range, or Match Frame Rate enabled. A different HDMI input or known-good cable can help test for a handshake problem. These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes; app playback, receiver processing, and TV settings can also cause sync errors.
One app crashes or will not play
Test at least two unrelated apps, such as Apple’s TV app and another streaming service. If only one app fails, update it in the App Store, force-close and relaunch it, and reinstall it if needed. Confirm that your account still works before signing out and back in. A single-app failure is not enough to conclude that tvOS itself is broken, and reports about a particular service should not be treated as confirmed systemwide defects without confirmation from Apple or the app developer.

Check that the intended speakers are still selected as the Apple TV audio output and that the Home app shows the correct room and stereo pair. Restart both the Apple TV and the affected speakers, then reselect the output. If the trouble began after creating or removing a Home Theater association in the Home app, review that configuration. Apple’s release notes document a resolved issue involving AirPlay to a stereo pair after a Home Theater setup was created or removed; that is evidence for checking this setup, not proof that all AirPlay failures share the same cause.
If reselecting the speakers does not help, consider removing and rebuilding the Home Theater association only after simpler checks fail. Avoid dismantling a working Home configuration for an isolated problem elsewhere.
Several apps fail or streaming will not start
Check that the Apple TV is connected to the internet and try another network-dependent app. A post-update streaming failure may instead be a Wi-Fi, Ethernet, router, DNS, account, or content-provider issue. If playback fails across multiple apps, restart the Apple TV and network equipment, then test again. When practical, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or a different network before concluding the operating system is responsible.

If the software update appears stuck
Follow Apple’s guidance for the message on screen rather than unplugging immediately. If the screen says Preparing Update or Applying Update, allow it time to finish. If it has been waiting for more than an hour, Apple advises contacting Support before restarting or unplugging it.
If there is an Apple logo with a progress bar, no accompanying text, and the bar has not moved for more than an hour, Apple’s guidance is to unplug and reconnect the Apple TV; contact Apple if it still does not recover. Do not interrupt an update just because it is taking longer than expected.

A reset can clear a corrupted setting or software state, but it erases accounts and configuration, and it may not solve an operating-system bug or hardware failure. Before proceeding, make sure you have Wi-Fi credentials and app logins, and note any HomeKit, profile, and audio-output arrangements you will need to restore.
On Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, go to Settings > System > Reset. Apple’s reset guide distinguishes the options:
- Reset restores factory settings without necessarily downloading an update.
- Reset and Update erases the device and installs the latest tvOS available to it.
Neither option is a way to return to tvOS 18. Do not reset just to fix one broken app or because you dislike the new appearance.

Can you downgrade to tvOS 18?
For most owners, there is no Apple-supported downgrade button or documented consumer procedure to move an Apple TV from tvOS 26 back to tvOS 18. A factory reset restores settings; Reset and Update installs the latest available tvOS, not an older release. Informal downgrade discussions do not make that a supported or reliable recovery method. If the Apple TV is unusable, Apple Support or service is the realistic next step.
When to contact Apple—and when to consider replacement
Contact Apple if an Apple TV 4K shows a warning symbol, remains black-screened, repeatedly boot-loops, or will not recover from an update. Apple’s recovery guidance directs Apple TV 4K owners with these symptoms toward service. Do not try to restore a 4K model using instructions intended for older devices.
The recovery distinction matters: Apple documents computer-based USB restoration for Apple TV HD with USB-C and Apple TV (3rd generation) with Micro-USB. Apple TV 4K does not have the same consumer computer-restoration workflow in that guidance. Use the instructions for your exact model.
Consider replacing a device only if it is old or no longer supported, repeatedly fails after appropriate troubleshooting or service assessment, or remains too sluggish for your needs. A replacement may improve performance and compatibility, but it will not bring back the tvOS 18 interface. For a cosmetic objection or one app failure, replacing the hardware is usually disproportionate.

- Keep tvOS 26 if the issue is mainly cosmetic, the Apple TV is usable, or an app-specific problem has been isolated and fixed.
- Wait for an update if the fault is intermittent and the device remains usable, particularly when a later release may address a related issue.
- Contact Apple for warning symbols, persistent black screens, boot loops, or failures that remain after sensible troubleshooting.
- Consider replacement only after distinguishing a persistent hardware or age-related limitation from a temporary software, app, network, or audio-chain problem.
When reporting a fault, include the Apple TV model, exact tvOS version and whether it is a beta, the app or audio setup involved, and the steps that reproduce the problem. That makes it easier to distinguish a version-specific issue from a setup or hardware fault.
