The HyperX Cloud Alpha S is worth considering if you want a comfortable wired headset, physical game/chat controls and adjustable bass—and can find a complete unit at a substantial discount. Its detachable mic and aluminum frame are practical strengths, but it is an older, wired-only design, its virtual 7.1 mode is optional processing rather than a guarantee of better positioning, and HyperX’s US store currently lists it as out of stock. For PC and PlayStation players, it can still make sense at the right price; for Xbox, Switch, mobile or wireless use, look elsewhere.
At a glance: The Cloud Alpha S is a closed-back, over-ear wired headset with a detachable microphone, USB control mixer, three-position bass ports and included leatherette and cloth ear cushions. HyperX lists PC, PS5 and PS4 compatibility. The US product page displays $79.99 against a $129.99 MSRP, but also says “Out Of Stock”; treat both price and availability as temporary signals, not a dependable offer. Check HyperX’s current listing before buying.
What the “S” adds
The Cloud Alpha S builds on the original Cloud Alpha rather than replacing its basic design. Its distinguishing extras are HyperX virtual 7.1 processing, a USB audio control mixer with game/chat balance, bass-adjustment sliders on both ear cups and alternate cloth cushions. Both versions have a detachable microphone and cable, but do not assume the original Alpha includes the S model’s mixer and controls. HyperX says its dual-chamber drivers separate bass from mids and highs to reduce distortion. That describes the company’s design intent, not proof that the headset measures or sounds better than competing models.

Sound: start with stereo, then adjust
The closed-back design keeps sound from escaping as freely as an open-back headset, but it does not create a naturally broad, speaker-like stage. Soundstage and directional cues depend on the game mix, the listener and processing settings. Do not buy this headset on the assumption that its “7.1” label automatically means more accurate footsteps.
The sliders are acoustic bass ports, not a full equalizer. HyperX describes three positions, with the fully open setting allowing the most bass. A useful starting point is:
- Closed: Try this first for dialogue, competitive games or a less bass-forward presentation.
- Partly open: A middle ground for general gaming.
- Fully open: Try it for more impact in action games or bass-led music.
Use the same recording or game scene to compare positions, and check both ear cups. More bass can make explosions and music feel weightier, but it is not a clarity upgrade by itself; an individual fit or pad choice can also change the result. The included cloth pads may affect the seal and therefore sound differently from the leatherette pads.

Is virtual 7.1 useful?
The mixer’s 7.1 button toggles a virtual surround effect delivered through stereo headphones; it is not seven physical speakers in each ear cup. Depending on the game and listener, processing may sound more spacious. It may also make voices, music or directional cues seem hollow, metallic or less natural. Those outcomes are subjective, and user reports describe both preferences and problems with the effect.
Compare three options in a familiar game: plain stereo, the Cloud Alpha S 7.1 mode, and the game’s own spatial-audio setting, if available. Turn off other surround or spatial processing while comparing, then re-enable it separately if desired. If virtual surround blurs direction or makes the mix unpleasant, use stereo. The control is convenient; the feature is not a reason to leave it on for every game or film.
Microphone and voice chat
The boom mic detaches when not needed. HyperX specifies an electret-condenser, bidirectional, noise-cancelling microphone rated at -38 dBV at 1 kHz. “Noise-cancelling” here refers to the microphone’s pickup design and noise rejection; it does not mean the headset has active noise cancellation for the listener.

That specification does not establish how natural or loud the voice sounds in a call. The mic is best treated as a practical gaming-chat feature, not a substitute for a dedicated microphone. Some owners have reported low mic volume or inconsistent software behavior, but anecdotes do not show how common those issues are. If voice chat is a priority, test your own recording and check input level, mute state and device selection before relying on it.
Comfort, fit and build
HyperX lists the headset at 0.68 lb (about 309 g) and includes memory-foam leatherette cushions plus an additional cloth set. The company describes the leatherette as more breathable than the original Alpha’s pads. Fit is personal: head size, ear shape, glasses, clamp tolerance and heat all affect long-session comfort. The cloth pads may suit someone who runs warm, but changing pads can alter both the seal and sound.
The aluminum frame is a sensible structural feature, and the detachable cable and microphone are easier to replace or remove than permanently attached parts. The ear cups and other components still have wear points. Owners have reported leatherette peeling, headband deterioration and eventual breakage after years of use; these are useful possible failure modes, not controlled durability statistics. HyperX lists a two-year warranty, but warranty coverage depends on seller, region and purchase terms.

For an older-stock or refurbished unit, inspect the pads, headband, cable and mixer, confirm the microphone and USB mixer are included, and verify the return window and warranty. Store the headset on a stand rather than hanging it by the cable, and avoid sharp bends at the detachable connection. Cloth pads can be a practical alternative if leatherette wear or heat is a concern.
Controls and USB versus analog connection
The included USB 2.0 mixer provides headset volume, microphone mute, game/chat balance and a 7.1 toggle. The user manual identifies these controls. Game/chat balance changes the relative levels of game audio and chat; it does not replace the volume controls inside a game or chat app.

With a direct analog connection, do not expect USB-specific game/chat balancing or virtual surround to be available. The analog path may still be useful with a compatible device, but connector and microphone support depend on the device and any required adapter. Check the exact setup rather than assuming every platform exposes the same features.

Compatibility and basic setup
HyperX’s current US listing names PC, PS5 and PS4. It does not list Xbox, Nintendo Switch, mobile or Mac for this package, so treat compatibility with those devices as unverified rather than promised. Retailer listings may differ; confirm the exact model and connection method.

PC setup
- Connect the detachable headset cable to the headset and the microphone if you need voice chat.
- Connect the cable to the USB mixer, then connect the mixer to the PC.
- Select the headset as Windows playback and input devices; select it in the game too unless you intentionally use separate devices.
- Start with stereo, then compare 7.1 without another spatial effect active.
- Use the mixer’s game/chat controls for relative balance and confirm the physical mic mute is off when speaking.
PS5 setup
- Connect the USB mixer to the console.
- If the headset is not selected automatically, choose it as the input and output device using the console’s audio settings.
- Check microphone level, start in stereo, then compare the 7.1 button in a familiar game.
- Avoid stacking multiple surround effects unless listening comparisons show that the combination helps.
If the microphone sounds quiet
Check that the boom is fully inserted and unmuted, raise the system input level, confirm the correct input device, and test another USB port and app. Check whether a game or chat app is applying automatic gain or noise suppression. Where possible, compare the USB mixer with an analog connection. If the mic remains unusually quiet across devices, suspect a cable, mixer or microphone fault rather than endlessly raising software gain.
How it compares with the original Cloud Alpha
The S is most worthwhile when you will actually use the USB mixer, game/chat balance or bass ports. If those controls and virtual surround do not matter, compare the standard Cloud Alpha’s price and exact package before paying extra. Likewise, check that a listing includes the S’s mixer, microphone and other expected accessories: used or old-stock packages may be incomplete.

Alternatives and value in 2026
Compare the Cloud Alpha S at its real checkout price—not just its displayed MSRP—with newer, currently available headsets. The HyperX Cloud III wired is a newer HyperX option; its controls and bundle are not identical, so check whether the Alpha S’s bass ports and mixer matter more to you. The Razer BlackShark V2 X is a simpler wired alternative. The Logitech G Pro X wired may appeal to buyers focused on microphone processing, though its software-oriented features may not suit someone who wants physical controls. Current prices and availability vary; compare them directly before buying.
Choose the Alpha S if it is substantially discounted, complete and covered by a clear return policy, and you value wired comfort, detachable parts and physical controls more than modern connectivity. Skip it if its price approaches newer alternatives, the seller cannot confirm what is included, or you need wireless, Bluetooth, Xbox/Switch support or a particularly strong microphone. HyperX US currently shows the S as out of stock, so availability may depend on other sellers and local stock; this does not by itself prove the model is discontinued.
