Hyperloop One shut down at the end of 2023. The wind-down was reported on December 21, with operations and the remaining employees expected to end on December 31. The company had tested its technology, including a passenger demonstration, but never secured a contract to build a commercial hyperloop route.
What was Hyperloop One?
Hyperloop One was a U.S. transportation-technology startup founded in 2014 to develop a system in which pods travel through low-pressure tubes, propelled by electric motors and supported by magnetic levitation. It began as Hyperloop Technologies, later adopted the Virgin Hyperloop One name after Richard Branson’s Virgin Group invested, and subsequently dropped the Virgin branding. The company eventually focused more heavily on freight than passenger travel. Bloomberg’s shutdown report and TechCrunch’s account describe those changes.
Hyperloop One was not founded by Elon Musk. Musk helped popularize the concept with a 2013 white paper, but the startup was a separate company.

What did it accomplish before closing?
The company built a test track near Las Vegas and conducted component and system tests. In 2020, it completed a controlled passenger ride, which Reuters described as the first passenger ride on the system. That milestone demonstrated a pod carrying people under test conditions; it was not a public service, a certified intercity route, or proof that a commercial network was ready to build. The gap is important: Hyperloop One built and tested hardware, but it did not build a commercial passenger or freight line. A short demonstration sits well before the final steps of certification, financing, construction, and sustained operation.
Why did Hyperloop One shut down?
The clearest reported reason is commercial: Hyperloop One failed to secure a contract to build and operate a working hyperloop system. The shutdown coverage does not identify one technical incident or single investor decision as the cause. Instead, it describes a company that had raised substantial capital and tested prototypes but had not translated them into a route. Reuters reported the missing contract; Bloomberg reported the wind-down.

A prototype was only the start
A commercial system would require more than pods and a test tube: long corridors and rights-of-way, stations, loading and transfer systems, power and maintenance facilities, safety and evacuation plans, regulatory approval, and reliable connections to existing transport. These are deployment challenges inherent in building a new transport network, not evidence that a particular Hyperloop One component failed.

In 2022 the company shifted its emphasis toward cargo. That offered a potential customer base connected to DP World’s logistics business, but freight still needed a complete, dependable route and integration with ports, warehouses, and established carriers. Changing the intended customer did not remove the need to finance and build new infrastructure. TechCrunch describes the cargo shift and the company’s relationship with DP World in its shutdown coverage.

Funding was not the same as deployment
Reuters reported that Hyperloop One raised more than $400 million. Bloomberg, citing PitchBook, put fundraising above $450 million since the company’s 2014 founding. These are reported estimates, not audited totals. The sums indicate investor interest; they do not establish that the technology was commercially ready. Reuters and Bloomberg report the respective figures.
What happened to its technology and assets?
December 2023 reports said DP World would retain or take control of Hyperloop One’s intellectual property, while the company planned to sell physical assets, including its Las Vegas-area test equipment. The remaining employees were expected to leave by December 31, 2023. Those details were attributed to people familiar with the wind-down; the cited coverage does not establish the final buyer of every asset or the legal disposition of every patent and subsidiary. Bloomberg and TechCrunch reported the plan.

DP World’s annual reports listed Hyperloop Technologies Inc. in its corporate structure and described its development work. That establishes the corporate relationship in those reports, not continued operation after the shutdown. See the 2022 annual report and 2023 annual report.

The cited Hyperloop One coverage describes a wind-down and planned asset sales; it does not establish that the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Do not confuse it with Virgin Orbit, a separate company that did file for Chapter 11 in 2023. Virgin Orbit’s SEC-filed announcement and effective-date filing concern Virgin Orbit, not Hyperloop One.

Does the shutdown mean hyperloop is dead?
No. One company’s closure does not end all research into low-pressure-tube transport, and reported retention of intellectual property means the underlying work did not necessarily disappear. But Hyperloop One’s shutdown is a major setback for commercialization: a highly visible, well-funded company built test hardware and demonstrated a passenger ride yet did not win a contract for a working route. The evidence supports a hard conclusion about this company’s business outcome, not a universal verdict that every version of the concept is impossible.
