The Kirin 9100 story was an October 2024 leak, not a confirmed specification for Huawei’s retail Mate 70 phones. Reports estimated that the chip could cost RMB 1,100–1,300 (roughly $150–$180) while trailing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in efficiency and likely overall performance. Huawei later launched the Mate 70 family with Kirin 9010 and Kirin 9020 variants instead.
What the original Kirin 9100 report claimed
The original report, published on October 7, 2024 and updated on October 9, described an unannounced Kirin 9100 based on leaks rather than a Huawei specification. As reported by Notebookcheck, the chip was allegedly expected to cost between RMB 1,100 and RMB 1,300, or approximately $150–$180.
The same reporting placed its expected performance above the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in some respects, but below the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in efficiency and likely peak performance. Earlier leaks also mentioned an AnTuTu score above one million, although there was no reproducible retail device, software version, thermal profile, or primary benchmark record behind that figure.
That distinction matters. “Expected to be slower than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3” was a forecast about a rumored chip. It was not the result of a controlled comparison between a shipping Mate 70 and a Snapdragon-powered phone.

Why could a less competitive chip cost so much?
A reported chip cost is not the same thing as a retail price, a public SMIC foundry quote, or the marginal cost of producing one additional processor. It may include estimates for manufacturing complexity, yield losses, packaging, testing, inventory risk, and other platform expenses.
The reported premium was nevertheless technically plausible. Huawei and SMIC have faced restrictions affecting access to advanced semiconductor equipment and foreign chipmaking ecosystems. Without EUV lithography, an advanced design may require older DUV equipment and additional patterning steps. More process steps can increase manufacturing complexity and reduce the share of usable chips produced from each wafer.
- DUV multi-patterning: Multiple exposures and process steps may be needed to create patterns that a more advanced EUV process could produce more efficiently.
- Yield pressure: If fewer dies on a wafer pass testing, the cost of every usable chip rises.
- Limited scale: A largely captive Huawei design may not benefit from the enormous volumes and customer base available to leading global foundries.
- Restricted supply chains: Sanctions can raise costs indirectly through equipment access, component sourcing, qualification, and inventory planning.
- Complete SoC costs: A smartphone processor includes more than CPU cores. Modem integration, packaging, testing, memory interfaces, and other platform functions also affect cost.
PhoneArena likewise linked the alleged price pressure to older manufacturing equipment and yield concerns, but that account was also based on reports and should not be treated as confirmation of the $150–$180 figure. Neither Huawei nor SMIC publicly confirmed that unit cost.

Comparing “5 nm,” “6 nm,” or “7 nm” labels alone is not enough to predict a chip’s speed, efficiency, or price. Different foundries use different design rules, transistor characteristics, libraries, density targets, and manufacturing approaches. A nominally smaller node is not automatically a faster or cheaper platform.

Architecture matters as well. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was a mature flagship platform with newer Arm CPU cores, a powerful GPU, established drivers, and a broad software-development ecosystem. A Kirin design operating under more difficult manufacturing conditions could deliver respectable short benchmark bursts while consuming more power or reaching thermal limits sooner.
Efficiency and peak performance are also separate measurements. A processor might briefly post a strong score but perform less well during sustained gaming, video processing, or repeated benchmark runs. Modem integration can further affect die area, power use, and manufacturing complexity. Huawei’s ability to include a domestic 5G modem was strategically important, even if it did not guarantee parity with Qualcomm’s latest platform.
The Mate 70 launch changed the answer
Huawei announced the Mate 70 family on November 26, 2024. The commercially released lineup comprised the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro+, and Mate 70 RS. Subsequent product analysis identified Kirin 9010 and Kirin 9020 variants rather than a confirmed Kirin 9100.
TechInsights’ teardown analysis identified the Kirin 9020 in the Mate 70 Pro+ and linked it to SMIC’s 7 nm-class manufacturing. TechInsights described the chip as an incremental redesign of the Kirin 9010, with changes intended to improve performance and efficiency while retaining compatibility with the underlying manufacturing approach.

Industry coverage does not always describe every Mate 70 model identically, so the precise handset variant matters. Omdia’s December 2024 smartphone analysis listed Kirin 9020 across the family, while other reporting distinguished Kirin 9010 and Kirin 9020 implementations. The safe conclusion is that the released lineup used Kirin 9010/9020 silicon—not that every model contained an identical processor.
Huawei’s official Chinese Mate 70 product page and its specifications page should be treated as regional product documentation. International availability, software, network support, warranty coverage, and model configurations can differ.
What the real Kirin 9020 benchmark evidence shows
There is limited device-specific benchmark evidence, and it should not be retroactively applied to the rumored Kirin 9100. In one Notebookcheck hands-on report, a Mate 70 RS sample recorded approximately 1,591 points in Geekbench 6.3 single-core testing and 5,178 points in multi-core testing.

Geekbench also emphasizes CPU performance. It does not by itself establish gaming performance, GPU capability, battery life, modem behavior, or sustained thermal performance. AnTuTu combines several subscores and has its own limitations. Neither benchmark alone provides a universal ranking of the Mate 70 family.
What “SoC price” means—and does not mean
The leaked RMB 1,100–1,300 estimate should be described as a reported production cost or rumored unit-cost estimate, not an official price. It was not necessarily:
- Huawei’s retail price for a Mate 70 phone;
- SMIC’s published foundry price;
- the full landed cost after packaging, testing, logistics, and inventory;
- a directly comparable Qualcomm contract price under the same volume and licensing conditions; or
- the marginal cost of manufacturing one additional chip.
That makes the original “price hike” framing easy to misunderstand. A high estimated internal cost does not prove that Huawei sold the phone at a loss, nor does it establish that the Kirin design was economically inferior in every respect. It indicates that producing an advanced domestic smartphone SoC under constrained conditions may carry substantial penalties.

What the story says about Huawei’s strategy
The important achievement was not simply matching Qualcomm’s latest flagship in benchmark scores. Huawei and SMIC demonstrated that Huawei could put a domestically designed 5G flagship SoC into a premium phone despite severe restrictions on access to advanced manufacturing technology.

The trade-off may include lower efficiency, lower yields, restricted supply, and a higher estimated per-unit cost. Yet a phone platform can remain commercially viable when its manufacturer controls the handset design, operating system, modem integration, cameras, industrial design, distribution, and customer ecosystem.
For buyers, the practical comparison is broader than Kirin versus Snapdragon. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones are generally the safer choice for international availability, broad Android app compatibility, demanding gaming, and established sustained-performance behavior. A Mate 70 may be more attractive to users committed to Huawei’s ecosystem or interested in Huawei-specific hardware and software features. International buyers should separately verify Google-services availability, app support, regional firmware, cellular bands, warranty coverage, and importer support.
Verdict: directionally plausible rumor, incorrect current specification
The original headline captured a plausible concern: a Huawei chip produced under manufacturing constraints could cost more while delivering less efficiency and lower performance than Qualcomm’s newest flagship platform. But it should remain archived as a rumor report.
The Kirin 9100’s alleged cost was never publicly confirmed, its Snapdragon comparison was forecast-based, and no reliable retail Mate 70 benchmark established its performance. Huawei ultimately launched the Mate 70 family with Kirin 9010/9020 variants, including the teardown-identified Kirin 9020 in the Mate 70 Pro+.
So the accurate retrospective conclusion is: the Kirin 9100 rumor was directionally plausible as a story about Huawei’s semiconductor constraints, but it was not a confirmed description of the shipping Mate 70 lineup.
