Huawei’s Mate XT ULTIMATE DESIGN became the first commercially announced tri-fold smartphone of its kind to receive an international launch when Huawei unveiled it in Kuala Lumpur on February 18, 2025. The phone folds into a 6.4-inch handset, opens partially to 7.9 inches, and unfolds into a 10.2-inch tablet-style display.
But “global” does not mean worldwide availability. Huawei confirmed selected international markets, including Europe and Malaysia; the reviewed launch evidence does not establish an official U.S. release or U.S. retail price.
What makes the Mate XT a tri-fold phone?
Unlike a conventional foldable, which uses one hinge to connect two sections, the Mate XT uses two hinges and one flexible display divided into three usable sections. One section folds inward and another folds outward, allowing the device to operate in three configurations.

It is not three separate screens. The three modes come from a single large flexible panel used at different folding angles.

Where did the global variant launch?
Huawei announced the international Mate XT at its Kuala Lumpur product event on February 18, 2025. This was the overseas version of the Mate XT introduced in China in September 2024, rather than an entirely separate generation.
European launch coverage reported a price of €3,499. Huawei’s Malaysian launch terms listed a recommended retail price of RM14,999 and documented a February 18, 2025 preorder period. Black and red color options were reported for Europe and Malaysia.
These prices are regional launch figures. They should not be converted into a U.S. MSRP, and they do not necessarily reflect later discounts, taxes, retailer pricing, bundles, or current availability. The reviewed evidence confirms selected international markets but does not confirm an official U.S. retail launch or U.S. price.

What is the large display useful for?
The main appeal is flexibility. The 6.4-inch configuration behaves like a phone, the 7.9-inch mode provides more room for reading and multitasking, and the 10.2-inch mode offers a tablet-sized canvas. Huawei promotes the phone for reading, video, mobile office work, and multi-window use.
The fully unfolded display has a listed 16:11 aspect ratio, which may be useful for documents and productivity. In practice, the benefit depends on whether the apps a buyer uses adapt well to the three screen sizes and changing aspect ratios. Huawei’s demonstrations should not be treated as proof that every third-party app will behave similarly.
The trade-offs are substantial
It is heavy and thick when carried
At approximately 298g before accounting for a case or other accessories, the Mate XT is far heavier than an ordinary smartphone and heavier than many book-style foldables. Its unfolded section measurements are remarkably thin, but the device is listed at 12.8mm thick when folded. Both facts matter: it can become tablet-thin across its open sections while still feeling bulky in a pocket.

Two hinges increase complexity
A tri-fold design introduces two hinges, a larger flexible display, and an outward-folding section that can be more exposed when the phone is closed. That creates more potential wear points and makes careful handling especially important. Huawei advertises improved materials and resistance, but those claims are not a guarantee against drops, scratches, or long-term failure.
The software ecosystem needs checking
Huawei phones in international markets have faced restrictions affecting Google Mobile Services. The exact app experience varies by region, firmware, and installation method, so buyers should verify support for banking, work, streaming, authentication, payments, and other Google-dependent apps before purchase. Do not assume a standard Google-certified Android experience.
Repairs and warranty may be difficult
Warranty coverage, service-center support, replacement-screen pricing, and parts availability are market-specific. An imported Mate XT may not receive the same coverage as a phone purchased through an authorized local channel. Flexible-display and hinge repairs may also be unusually expensive.

The Mate XT offers more display area than a conventional foldable, but it also asks the buyer to accept more weight, cost, mechanical complexity, and software uncertainty. There is no single winner for every user.
Should you buy the global Mate XT?
It is most defensible for an early adopter, collector, or professional who will regularly use the 10.2-inch screen and can buy through an officially supported market. Before ordering, verify:
- Official availability and local warranty coverage in your country.
- LTE and 5G bands, carrier compatibility, and regional firmware.
- Support for essential banking, work, streaming, authentication, and payment apps.
- Access to an authorized service center and the likely cost of hinge or screen repairs.
- The supplied case and screen-protection guidance. Do not treat a flexible-display protector like ordinary tempered glass.
- Whether nearly 300g plus accessories is acceptable for daily use.
If the phone would remain folded most of the time, a conventional flagship or a more established book-style foldable is likely to be more practical and less risky. The Mate XT makes sense only when its unusually large, multi-mode display justifies its price and compromises.

Huawei’s Mate XT is a significant hardware milestone: it turns a phone-sized device into a 10.2-inch tablet through two hinges and one flexible display. Its international launch proved that tri-fold phones could move beyond prototypes and a China-only debut.
It is not, however, a universal global phone or an obvious mainstream recommendation. The €3,499 European price, RM14,999 Malaysian RRP, approximately 298g weight, 12.8mm folded thickness, regional software limitations, and uncertain support for imported units make it primarily a luxury technology showcase. For most buyers, local availability, app compatibility, warranty access, and daily comfort matter more than having the largest folding screen.
