The Huawei Y6 2018 is a real 2018 entry-level phone, but in 2026 it is best treated as a very low-cost device for basic tasks—not a dependable modern main phone. Its 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, Android 8-era software and likely aged battery are significant limits. Consider one only if it is very cheap, passes a hands-on inspection, and its exact model works with your carrier.
One important caveat: “Y6 2018” does not identify a single worldwide configuration. SIM slots, firmware and LTE bands can vary, so check the model number and test the actual handset before buying.

These are the commonly documented specifications, not a guarantee that every phone sold under the name has identical hardware. References include Gadgets 360’s specifications, O2’s device specifications and Notebookcheck’s review.
What the Y6 2018 is like to use
The 5.7-inch, 18:9 screen gives the phone a taller front than older 16:9 budget models, but the 720 × 1440 resolution is modest by current standards. It is adequate for calls, messages, light browsing, music and simple video playback. Do not confuse the screen’s size or Huawei’s “FullView” branding with a modern high-resolution display. Screen condition is also important on a phone this old: check for cracks, discoloration, uneven brightness and parts of the touchscreen that do not respond.

Performance is the more serious everyday constraint. With 2 GB of RAM and only 16 GB of internal storage, apps may open slowly, browser tabs may reload and multitasking is limited. Some current apps may no longer support its software or may run poorly. It is not a sensible choice for demanding games, heavy social-media use or frequent switching between apps.
A microSD card can hold media such as photos, music and videos, but it does not add RAM or remove the internal-storage limits. Android’s ability to move apps to a card varies, so do not assume the card can substitute for internal storage. If you already own the phone, remove unused apps, move media to a computer or card, clear large messaging-app media folders and keep several gigabytes of internal space free where possible.
Identify the exact model before buying
Find the model number under Settings → System → About phone, or check the box and regulatory information. ATU-L21 is one identifier associated with a Y6 2018 variant, but it is not the only regional identifier. A seller’s title alone is not enough to confirm the model, processor, SIM layout or network bands.

- Single SIM and dual SIM: Both configurations exist. Do not assume a particular unit has two physical SIM slots.
- Processor listings: Snapdragon 425/MSM8917 is commonly reported, but conflicting Snapdragon 450 entries appear online. Check the exact model and, if needed, use an on-device hardware-information screen rather than relying on a generic listing.
- Y6 Prime 2018: Marketplace listings sometimes blur the Y6 2018 and Y6 Prime 2018. Compare model identifier, processor, RAM, camera layout and regulatory details before paying.
- Y6 2017 and Y5 2018: These are different phones, even if a listing uses similar names or images. The Y6 2018 has the taller 18:9 display; a review also noted improved LTE-band support over the Y6 2017 in some configurations.
Specifications references include PhoneArena and the One New Zealand regional datasheet; neither should be treated as proof that every region sold the same variant.
Android, security and Google Play
The phone launched with Android 8.0 Oreo and EMUI 8.0. It is an old Android-era device: buyers should not expect current Android features or current security support, and some banking, authentication, work, streaming or messaging apps may have minimum-version requirements it cannot meet. A factory reset clears user data; it does not upgrade the phone to a current Android release. Do not treat unofficial firmware as an easy fix: it can affect security, banking apps, camera functions and media protections.

Many regional Y6 2018 versions from its launch period included Google apps and Play Store, but used imports may have different regional firmware, modified software or a carrier configuration. Before buying, start the phone, complete setup, open Google Play and install or update a test app. If you need Google services and they are missing or malfunctioning, a return is safer than downloading service packages from an unfamiliar site.
Camera, battery and charging
The rear camera is rated at 13 MP and the selfie camera at 5 MP. In good daylight, the rear camera may be sufficient for casual snapshots, but expect less detail, weaker low-light results and slower focusing than from a current phone. The front flash can help in dim conditions; it does not make the camera a modern night-photography system. Lens condition, replacement parts and software can all affect results.

The original 3,000 mAh battery is non-removable, and an original 2018 battery may now have substantially reduced capacity. A published review’s laboratory battery results describe a review unit at the time, not the battery life of a handset in 2026. Check for rapid percentage drops, poor standby time, unexpected shutdowns and excessive heat while charging. Do not use a phone with a bulging back, a lifting screen, unusual heat or a chemical smell; these can indicate a battery problem. Replacing the battery may make sense for an existing owner, but repair cost is difficult to justify unless the phone itself was obtained cheaply.
The Y6 2018 charges through micro-USB, not USB-C. If charging is intermittent, test a known-good cable and charger and inspect the port for damage. Avoid scraping it with metal tools, and treat a loose port or overheating as a repair issue rather than assuming software is at fault.
Will it work with your mobile network?
“4G” or “unlocked” does not guarantee that a particular Y6 2018 will work for calls and data on your network. LTE bands vary by regional model, and carrier requirements and network provisioning change. A review of one variant noted Band 5 support, but that does not establish the bands supported by every version.
Before buying, get the exact model number and check its supported LTE bands against the carrier’s current requirements. Where the carrier offers an IMEI compatibility check, use it. Confirm the phone is unlocked and ask whether you can insert your intended SIM, place a call, send a text and use mobile data before the return period ends. This is especially important in the US: do not assume compatibility with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or an MVNO based on a seller’s “worldwide” or “4G unlocked” claim. A phone might connect to LTE data and still fail to provide voice service.

Use a return window to test the actual handset, not just its description.
- Confirm identity: Check model number, storage, SIM layout and software version in Settings. Make sure the phone is not activation-locked or enterprise-managed.
- Check software: Open Play Store if required, install a test app, and look for signs of modified software. Do not count on a reset to bring it up to date.
- Test the SIM and connections: Use the intended SIM to make a call, send an SMS and test mobile data. Also test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
- Inspect the display and controls: Test touch response across the whole screen; check for dead pixels, discoloration and cracks. Test buttons, vibration, earpiece, loudspeaker and microphones.
- Test cameras and accessories: Take photos with both cameras, try the flashes, connect wired headphones and check the microSD slot if you need it.
- Test charging and battery: Charge from a low percentage, watch for heat and erratic charging, and see whether the charge drops unusually quickly. Reject a unit with signs of swelling.
- Get terms in writing: Ask about battery condition, unlock status, model number and returns. A “refurbished” label does not necessarily mean a new battery; compare the seller’s warranty and return terms.
Price depends on country, condition, SIM configuration, warranty and shipping. A UK marketplace snapshot in the research showed refurbished 16 GB examples at about £79, with a dual-SIM option around £89, plus a 12-month seller warranty and 30-day returns. These are dated, region-specific listing observations—not a universal fair price, a US valuation or a promise of current availability. Compare any asking price with newer used phones that offer more memory and software support.

The phone is slow
Limited RAM, nearly full storage, demanding apps and heat can all contribute. Free internal space, remove apps you do not use, restart the phone and reduce visual effects where available. Lighter apps may help, but they cannot make the hardware modern. Back up your data before considering a factory reset.
It says storage is insufficient
Delete downloads and duplicate media, clear large app caches, move photos and videos to a computer or microSD card, and uninstall apps you do not use. Keep some internal space available for temporary files and updates; filling it completely can make an already constrained phone harder to use.

Possible causes include unsupported bands, carrier voice provisioning, network changes, a locked handset, regional firmware or an account/SIM issue. Check the exact model against the carrier and test voice service; replacing the SIM is not guaranteed to solve the problem.
Google Play is missing
Regional firmware or modified software may be involved. If Play Store is essential, do not buy the phone until it works normally, or return it if it does not. Avoid treating random downloads of Google-service packages as a safe first step.
The battery drains quickly or charging cuts out
Check battery use by app, remove unnecessary apps, lower brightness and disable radios you are not using. Try a known-good micro-USB cable and charger for intermittent charging. If the port is loose, the phone heats up, or the battery is swollen, stop using it and seek qualified repair or replacement.
Who should consider it—and who should not
The Y6 2018 is plausible as a spare phone or an ultra-budget handset for calls, texts, music and light browsing if the battery is sound and the exact network variant is confirmed. A seller with a useful return period is preferable to a private listing that cannot demonstrate basic functions. A UK listing observed at £79–£89 is only a market snapshot, not evidence that those prices represent good value everywhere.

Choose something newer if this will be your primary phone or you depend on current banking and work apps, dependable security support, long battery life, USB-C, good photography, gaming or reliable carrier compatibility. If a newer used Android phone with more RAM, storage and a newer software base costs only modestly more, it is usually the better buy.
