A blinking red LOS light on a Huawei fiber ONT/router usually means it is not receiving a usable optical signal. The cause may be a loose or damaged fiber connection, a provider-side line or equipment fault, or an ONT problem—not a Wi-Fi setting. Check the visible cable and restart the device once; if LOS stays red, contact your internet provider for an optical-line check.
First, make sure the light says LOS
LOS means loss of signal. On a fiber ONT (the optical network terminal, sometimes built into a device sold as a router), it refers to the optical signal arriving over the fiber. It does not refer to Wi-Fi strength.
Check the label printed beside the light. A red Internet or WAN indicator is not necessarily an LOS warning. Huawei consumer-router documentation, for example, describes a red Internet indicator as meaning the router is not connected to the Internet; that is different from diagnosing a missing optical signal. The exact LED meanings depend on the model and provider configuration.

On several Huawei ONT models, a slow red blink—about once every two seconds—means that no fiber is connected or the device is not receiving optical signal. Huawei’s indicator guide documents this behavior for applicable models. Do not assume the timing or meaning is identical across every Huawei device.

Read LOS together with PON
PON indicates the ONT’s connection to the provider’s passive optical network. Check both lights and, if possible, note their exact states before calling support:

| Steady green | Off | The optical connection is generally established. If Internet still does not work, investigate the WAN service, authentication, router, or Wi-Fi separately. |
| Fast green blink | Off | The ONT may be attempting to connect or activate; check the model’s indicator guide. |
| Off | Solid red | On some models, the ONT may be disabled upstream or operating abnormally. Contact the provider. |
| Slow green blink | Slow red blink | Huawei identifies this combination as a possible hardware fault on certain equipment; it is not proof that the fiber is cut. |
These are model-dependent examples, not universal codes. Check the guide for the exact Huawei model printed on the device. If yours has a separate ONT and Wi-Fi router, the LOS light will usually be on the ONT.

Safe checks to try at home
- Check whether the outage affects all devices. If phones, computers, and wired devices are all offline while LOS is red, changing Wi-Fi settings is unlikely to restore the optical link.
- Look over the fiber path. Follow the cable from the ONT to the wall outlet or fiber termination box. Check for a connector that appears displaced, a tight bend, pinching under furniture or a door, or visible damage. Do not pull the cable to reposition it.
- Keep the fiber safe. Do not sharply bend or tightly coil it, crush it, repeatedly unplug it, or attempt to splice, polish, or repair it. Never look into the fiber connector or optical port. Huawei specifically warns against viewing an optical port with the naked eye. If a connector seems loose or damaged, ask your provider how they want it handled.
- Restart the ONT/router. Power it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. Allow several minutes for the indicators to settle; connection time varies by model and provider. Huawei recommends checking the optical connection and restarting equipment as basic abnormal-indicator checks.
- Recheck LOS and PON. If the optical link recovers, LOS should generally go out and PON should indicate an established connection, though colors and sequences vary. If LOS is still red, stop repeating the reboot and report the light states to your provider.
- Check for a service outage. Use the provider’s outage channel if available, or ask whether nearby customers on the same service are affected. A neighborhood fault can produce the same symptom as a home-side cable problem.
Why LOS can blink red
The light signals absent or insufficient received optical power; it does not identify a single failed part. Possible causes include:

- A sharply bent, crushed, cut, or otherwise damaged indoor fiber or drop cable.
- A problem at a splice, wall termination, provider splitter, cabinet, or OLT port.
- Low optical power or a broader provider outage.
- An ONT that has failed, has not been activated, or has been disabled or not properly registered upstream.
If service was just installed, ask the provider to confirm that the fiber signal is present and the ONT is activated and provisioned. If the light changes when the cable is moved or with temperature, mention that as a clue; it may point to an intermittent connection, but it does not confirm the cause.

When to contact the ISP
Contact your provider if LOS remains red after you have inspected the visible cable and restarted the ONT, or if the light repeatedly returns. Optical receive-power measurements, ONT registration, and provider-side port or network checks generally require the ISP’s equipment. Huawei’s troubleshooting guidance likewise advises contacting the operator or installation personnel when the abnormal indicator persists.

- The Huawei model and, if requested, the serial number.
- Confirmation that the light is labeled LOS, and whether it blinks slowly, blinks quickly, or stays solid red.
- The PON light’s state and whether the Internet light is also on or red.
- Whether all devices and services are offline, and when the issue began.
- Whether you restarted the ONT and whether anything changed.
- Any recent construction, severe weather, moving furniture, or work near the cable; whether neighbors using the same provider are affected.
You can say: “The Huawei ONT’s LOS light is blinking red, the PON light is [off/blinking/green], and the Internet is down on every device. I checked the visible fiber connection and restarted it. Please check the optical signal and the line or ONT status.” The provider may describe its tests differently, but these symptoms are useful to report.
Do not factory-reset as a first step
A power restart and a factory reset are different. Restarting simply cycles the device. A factory reset can erase settings or provider-specific configuration, may leave the device unable to access the Internet, and may require the provider’s help to restore service. It will not repair a cut, loose, or weak optical connection. Huawei warns about the risk of losing Internet access after restoring factory settings in its hardware troubleshooting guide. Reset only if your ISP specifically instructs you to do so.

If LOS is off but the Internet is still down
When LOS is off and PON indicates a stable connection, the fiber link may be healthy even though Internet service is not. Check the Internet/WAN indicator, try a wired Ethernet connection if available, and check provider outage or account-status information. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, troubleshoot Wi-Fi separately. A steady optical connection alone does not confirm that WAN authentication, routing, or wireless service is working.
Changing DNS, buying a new Wi-Fi router, or replacing the ONT is not a sensible first response to a red LOS light. Ask the ISP to determine whether the fault is in the optical path, provider network, provisioning, or ONT before replacing equipment.
