The headline refers to the Huawei Pura X, a China-launched foldable announced on March 20, 2025—not a new August 2026 phone reveal. Unlike most book-style foldables, it opens sideways into a broad 6.3-inch, 16:10 screen and closes into a square handset with a 3.5-inch outer display. Its AI story is also more precise than the shorthand “DeepSeek-powered”: Huawei’s Xiaoyi assistant brings together Huawei’s Pangu capabilities and DeepSeek features.
What the Huawei Pura X is—and why its shape stands out
Huawei introduced the Pura X in China on March 20, 2025, with a starting price of 7,499 yuan. The launch price was reported at roughly $1,037 at the time; that is not a verified current street price. Huawei’s sideways-folding design is described as a “wide foldable”: open it and the main screen is broader and more landscape-friendly than the tall inner panels common on book-style foldables. Engadget’s launch report said pre-orders began around launch, deliveries started March 21, and wider sales were due shortly afterward.
The inner display measures 6.3 inches diagonally and uses a 16:10 aspect ratio. That ratio can give web pages, documents, split-screen apps, and landscape video a more natural canvas than a narrow, tall phone screen. It may also suit some games. But 16:10 describes the unfolded inner display—not the phone’s complete external dimensions—and the wider open handset may be less comfortable for one-handed use. Apps built around tall phone layouts may scale or arrange content less gracefully.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of identical results in everyday use. Huawei says actual results can vary with configuration, manufacturing, software, environment, and usage. IPX8 does not mean permanently waterproof: the phone is not professional waterproof equipment, protection can diminish, and liquid damage may not be covered by warranty. Maximum charging speeds require compatible Huawei equipment; Huawei’s full 40 W wireless mode depends on specified accessories. Huawei’s Pura X product page lists those qualifications and accessory requirements.
What “DeepSeek-powered” means on this phone
The assistant is Xiaoyi, Huawei’s own assistant—not simply a DeepSeek app renamed for the phone. Huawei describes its AI experience as combining its Pangu model with DeepSeek. Its support documentation says users can access a DeepSeek-R1 agent through Xiaoyi and use DeepSeek-enabled web-connected search. The most accurate summary is that Huawei integrated DeepSeek capabilities into Xiaoyi alongside its own models and services; the evidence does not establish that every Xiaoyi answer or every AI feature is generated solely by DeepSeek.

Huawei documents a specific route to the agent: in the Xiaoyi app, go to Discover → Agents → DeepSeek-R1. Its support page specifies HarmonyOS 5.0.0.130 or later and Xiaoyi 11.2.10.340 or later for DeepSeek access. Availability and behavior can depend on software version, region, internet access, and Huawei services. A web-connected answer can also be stale, incorrect, or poorly sourced, so it should not be treated as authoritative without checking important claims. Huawei has not established that all DeepSeek processing takes place on the phone itself.

Beyond the DeepSeek agent and search, Huawei advertises Xiaoyi and HarmonyOS functions including AI-assisted call answering with customizable responses, caching video for offline viewing, automatically making travel-style videos from photos, portrait retouching, and gesture-based file sharing between supported devices. Some features may require an update delivered through HOTA, an internet connection, compatible devices, or particular software. They should not be read as a guarantee that every capability worked for every buyer on launch day.

HarmonyOS: what changed since launch
At launch, the Pura X drew attention as Huawei’s first handset to ship without conventional Android compatibility, as Engadget characterized it. It launched on Huawei’s newer HarmonyOS software line rather than the Android-based HarmonyOS versions associated with some earlier Huawei phones. “HarmonyOS” is not one uniform software environment: version, app compatibility, services, and available features matter.
The situation has since moved on. Huawei’s current product page says the Pura X supports an upgrade to HarmonyOS 6. It also says units manufactured from January 2026 onward were expected to transition gradually to factory-installed HarmonyOS 6, depending on the purchase batch. Buyers should check the software version on the exact device rather than assume every new or remaining-stock unit ships with the same build.

For many buyers, this software distinction matters more than the AI label. Do not assume Google Play, Google Wallet, Android Auto, or other Google Mobile Services are available as they are on a conventional Android phone. Likewise, the presence of DeepSeek access does not resolve broader app, payment, notification, car, wearable, or enterprise compatibility questions.

The launch coverage reported that sanctions affecting Huawei would prevent the Pura X from being sold in the United States through normal official channels. No verified official U.S. launch or U.S. carrier support is established here. A reseller listing may indicate an import offer, but it is not evidence of official U.S. availability.

Importing is not necessarily impossible, but it is a buyer-risk decision. Check the exact model number against the bands used by your carrier, and confirm carrier acceptance rather than assuming a connection will work. Chinese-market software, language and regional services, payment options, app availability, warranty coverage, and repair access may differ from what an international buyer expects. Warranty or repairs may be limited to China. Google Mobile Services should not be assumed. A seller may also bundle different accessories or make claims about unofficial software; establish what is installed, what support is included, and what happens if the device needs repair before paying.
Who is the Pura X for?
The Pura X makes the most sense for someone who wants a genuinely different foldable layout, values a broad inner screen for reading, browsing, documents, or multitasking, and is already comfortable with Huawei’s China-focused ecosystem. It is an intriguing design for foldable enthusiasts who would rather have a wide canvas than a tall one.
It is a poor fit for buyers who depend on Google services, need official U.S. carrier support or a familiar international warranty, expect every Android app to work natively, or rely on non-Huawei cars, wearables, payment systems, or workplace tools. For those readers, the combination of regional software, uncertain imported-device support, and the small outer screen is a more consequential trade-off than the novelty of the hinge.

The Pura X is best understood as an experiment in foldable screen proportions and Huawei’s software ecosystem—not merely a flip phone with a larger cover screen or a handset running a single DeepSeek brain. Its 16:10 inner display is the defining idea; its China-market availability and HarmonyOS app ecosystem are the defining buying caveats. The launch price was 7,499 yuan, but it should not be treated as a current price or a straightforward U.S. purchase option.
