Choose an HTTP client when you need to build, send, save, and repeat API requests. Choose a debugging proxy when you need to observe traffic from an existing app or device. They solve different problems, although some tools overlap: Postman, for example, combines API requests with a built-in traffic-capture proxy.
The available product documentation supports a useful comparison of six tools—Postman, Insomnia, Bruno, HTTPie, mitmproxy, and OWASP ZAP—not a verified ranking of twelve. Rather than fill the promised number with unverified names, this guide compares those six by workflow and explains how to choose and set up the right category.
First, distinguish an HTTP client from a debugging proxy
An HTTP client is where you compose and send requests: specify a URL, method, headers, authentication, and body, then inspect the response. Many clients also let you save requests in collections, apply environment variables, run scripts, or automate repeatable tests.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A debugging proxy sits between an application and the server. The application or device must route traffic through it; the proxy can then show requests and responses, and some proxies can modify or replay flows. Installing a client does not automatically let it see another app’s traffic.

Six tools, matched to their documented workflows
The comparison below sticks to capabilities listed in the vendors’ documentation. It is not a performance ranking, and it does not compare current prices, complete platform availability, or plan limits.
| Tool | Best fit | Interfaces and documented protocols | Traffic capture or repeatability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postman | API work with an additional traffic-capture option | Desktop app; HTTP and HTTPS traffic capture | Built-in proxy can capture requests, responses, and cookies from configured clients; history can be searched or filtered and saved to collections. Proxy settings also control how Postman sends requests. Proxy capture guide; proxy settings. |
| Insomnia | API design, debugging, and testing in a graphical application | HTTP, gRPC, GraphQL, and WebSockets | Collections contain requests, folders, environments, and optional OpenAPI specs; collections can be run and scripted. Product documentation; collections. |
| Bruno | Collections kept as local, Git-native files alongside code | REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and WebSocket | Vendor documentation describes plain-text collections and command-line automation for CI/CD. These are documented product capabilities, not an independent security assessment. Bruno product documentation. |

| mitmproxy | Inspecting and changing traffic routed through an intercepting proxy | HTTP/1, HTTP/2, and WebSockets; console, web, and dump interfaces | Can intercept and modify requests and responses, save and replay conversations, and script changes with Python. TLS inspection setup involves a local proxy and its generated CA certificate. Introduction; getting started. |
| OWASP ZAP | Web-application testing and proxy-oriented workflows | Not stated in the cited API reference | The API reference describes access to its API UI when proxying through ZAP or reaching its listening host and port. That reference alone is not a complete feature evaluation. API reference. |
Which HTTP client should you use to test an API?
Choose Postman for a combined request-and-capture workflow
Postman is the clearest fit when you want to send API requests and may also need to capture traffic from a configured client. Its desktop proxy can retain captured traffic in session history and let you search or filter it, then save useful requests to collections. This overlap makes it convenient for workflows that alternate between reproducing a request and observing what an app sent.
Choose Insomnia for multi-protocol API collections
Insomnia is documented for HTTP, gRPC, GraphQL, and WebSockets. Its collections organize requests, folders, environments, and optional OpenAPI specs, and support running collections and scripts. Consider it when those request types and collection workflows align with your team’s API design and testing work.
Rank #2

Choose Bruno when collections belong with the repository
Bruno’s vendor documentation describes local-first, Git-native plain-text collections, support for REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and WebSocket requests, and CLI workflows for automation and CI/CD. That makes it a candidate when reviewable request files alongside application code matter. The product description is not proof of a particular security outcome; assess storage and team requirements directly.
Choose HTTPie for a terminal or desktop approach
HTTPie offers both a desktop API-testing client and a CLI client. The CLI documentation covers HTTPS, proxies, authentication, JSON, uploads, and formatted output. It suits developers who want to build or debug requests at a terminal, while the desktop client offers a graphical alternative. The documentation does not establish a performance advantage over other clients.
How do I inspect HTTP or HTTPS traffic from an app?
Route authorized traffic through the proxy
For a proxy to capture an app’s traffic, configure the app or device to use the proxy’s host and port. A proxy cannot inspect requests that never pass through it. Use interception only for devices and traffic you own or are explicitly authorized to examine.

Set up mitmproxy for interactive inspection
- Install mitmproxy using the method for your operating system, following its Getting Started guide.
- Start the interface suited to the job:
mitmproxyfor an interactive console,mitmwebfor a browser interface, ormitmdumpfor non-interactive output. - Configure the client or device to route its traffic through the local proxy as described in the guide.
- For HTTPS inspection, install mitmproxy’s generated CA certificate as the guide directs. Without that certificate setup, encrypted traffic is not available for ordinary TLS inspection.
- Generate a request in the app and inspect the flows in the chosen interface. Use the tool’s documented controls and scripting options if you need to modify, save, replay, or process traffic.
Certificate installation does not guarantee visibility into every app. Certificate pinning or other application restrictions can prevent interception, and the cited setup documentation does not establish universal compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Capture through Postman’s built-in proxy
- In the Postman desktop app, follow the built-in proxy capture guide to configure a client to send traffic through Postman.
- Install the certificate as directed if you need HTTPS capture.
- Generate traffic in the configured client, then search or filter captured requests, responses, and cookies in the session history.
- Save useful captured requests to a collection if you want to reuse them as API requests.
Postman’s separate proxy settings also cover proxy configuration for requests that Postman itself sends; see its proxy settings documentation. Sending requests through a proxy and capturing another client’s traffic are related, but distinct, configurations.
How to choose: a practical checklist
- Define the direction of work: are you creating requests, repeating a saved suite, or observing an app you did not author?
- Check protocols: select only a tool whose documentation lists the request types you need, such as GraphQL, gRPC, or WebSockets.
- Plan repeatability: look for collections, scripts, CLI execution, and CI support if a manual request must become a repeatable check.
- Choose where request data should live: consider local files and Git, shared collaboration, or other storage requirements; confirm current behavior and plan limits with the vendor.
- Validate proxy constraints early: confirm that you can route the target app through a proxy and, for TLS inspection, install its CA certificate where appropriate.
- Compare platform and price directly: the cited documentation does not establish a complete current platform or pricing comparison for these products.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a general-purpose HTTP client or a debugging proxy. It is relevant when the output you need is a rendered page image or PDF rather than a request collection or a view of an app’s network exchanges. Its website screenshot API accepts one GET request with a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF.
Rank #4
- DIGITAL MODE: Easily trace and locate cables on an active network to identify their paths and destinations effectively
- ANALOG MODE: Isolate individual wire pairs, facilitating the tracing of voice, data, video, and audio cables
- CONTINUITY AND POLARITY TESTING: Results for continuity and polarity tests are displayed on LEDs that are clearly labeled and easy to read
- TRACE UNSTRIPPED WIRES: Rugged Angled Bed of Nails (ABN) clips securely attach to wires
- WIRE MAPPING CAPABILITIES: Utilize wire mapping capabilities to verify Pin-to-Pin connections and shield detection
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot, a single request can replace setting up a browser capture. Install the Python dependency with python -m pip install requests, then save this as capture.py and run python capture.py. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters.
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Troubleshooting proxy setup
No traffic appears
Check that the target app or device is actually configured to use the proxy and that it can reach the proxy’s host and port. A proxy only receives traffic routed through it; installing the proxy alone does not redirect unrelated apps.
HTTPS traffic is not readable
Follow the tool’s CA certificate installation instructions for the device or client. Postman and mitmproxy both document certificate setup for HTTPS capture or inspection. If the certificate is installed but a specific app still resists inspection, application-level restrictions such as certificate pinning may be involved; the cited sources do not establish a universal workaround.

Postman sends requests through the wrong path
Distinguish between capturing an external client’s traffic with Postman’s built-in proxy and configuring Postman’s own proxy settings. Check the relevant guide for the intended workflow: capture with proxy or proxy settings.
A request works manually but not in automation
Compare the saved request’s URL, headers, authentication, environment values, and body with the successful manual call. For collection-based tools, check that the intended collection and environment are selected; for CLI or CI workflows, use the vendor’s current automation documentation rather than assuming desktop settings carry over.
Why this is a six-tool guide, not a twelve-tool ranking
The title’s number cannot be substantiated by the products covered in the available official documentation: six tools have supported profiles here, not twelve comparable and currently verified entries. Expanding the list with unverified names or implying a complete market ranking would be less useful than clearly stating its scope. The six documented tools also span different categories, so a single winner would obscure the key decision: whether you need to author requests, automate them, or observe traffic from another application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an API client capture traffic from another app?
Some can. Postman documents a built-in proxy for configured clients; ordinary request-building features alone do not capture unrelated app traffic.
Does an HTTPS proxy reveal every app’s requests?
No. The client must route traffic through it, TLS inspection generally requires installing the proxy’s CA certificate, and app restrictions such as certificate pinning can interfere.
Is ScreenshotNeo an HTTP debugging proxy?
No. It returns rendered website screenshots or PDFs; it does not replace the HTTP clients or traffic-inspection proxies compared here.
