Use html2canvas for an in-browser “Export PNG” feature, keep PhantomJS only for contained legacy automation, and use a hosted renderer such as Urlbox for server-side URLs, scheduled jobs, PDFs, videos, or extraction. If you want a hosted API without operating browsers, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes common page clutter before capture, bills only successful clean shots, and has a lower paid entry plan than the Urlbox tiers listed below.

Quick verdict

Tool Rendering model Runs where Best fit Main limitation
html2canvas Rebuilds a picture from the loaded DOM and styles The user’s browser Same-origin UI exports, previews, annotations Not a real browser screenshot; CSS, images, iframes, and canvas-size limits can change the result
PhantomJS QtWebKit headless-browser rendering Your own server or build machine Maintaining an existing PhantomJS workflow Official development is suspended; modern web compatibility and security maintenance are risks
Urlbox Hosted URL/HTML rendering service Urlbox infrastructure Server-side capture, batches, schedules, PDFs, videos, and extraction Recurring hosted cost and vendor/data-trust considerations
ScreenshotNeo Hosted website screenshot and PDF API ScreenshotNeo infrastructure Clean automated captures without running a browser fleet Requires an API key and a network request

The decisive question is not which name is “best.” It is whether you need a DOM approximation in an existing tab, a legacy browser binary, or a maintained hosted rendering pipeline.

What each option actually does

html2canvas: a client-side DOM reconstruction

html2canvas traverses the page that is already loaded and paints a representation into a canvas. Its documentation explicitly cautions that it “may not be 100% accurate to the real representation” because it does not take an actual screenshot; it builds one from information available in the DOM. Every CSS property has to be implemented by the library, so unsupported or partially supported properties can differ from what the browser displays.

It works in modern Firefox, Chromium-based browsers, and Safari. The FAQ explains why it is client-side only: it relies on window, document, and computed styles, so it does not run directly in Node.js. It is a good match for a button inside your own application where the user can see the same page you are exporting.

PhantomJS: a capable but suspended browser engine

PhantomJS is a scriptable headless browser built on QtWebKit. Its capture guide covers HTML styled with CSS, SVG, images, and canvas, with PNG, JPEG, GIF, and PDF output plus viewport and clip rectangles. Unlike html2canvas, it loads and lays out a page outside the current browser tab.

The official PhantomJS homepage says: “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” That makes it a legacy dependency rather than a sensible default for a new service. If you must keep it, isolate the binary, pin its environment, and build regression tests around the pages you depend on. For new work requiring current web-platform behavior or security updates, evaluate maintained headless Chromium tooling or a hosted service instead.

Urlbox: hosted rendering and automation

Urlbox describes itself as an API for converting URLs and HTML into screenshots, PDFs, videos, and for extracting text, HTML, and metadata. Its documentation describes embeddable render links that return the result directly, plus synchronous and asynchronous POST requests to a JSON API.

Documented use cases include website galleries, advertising assets, archives, thumbnail generation, responsive checks, Open Graph images, PDF export, video previews, metadata extraction, and scheduled comparisons. This is the category to consider when the source URL is not already open in a user’s browser and you need repeatable server-side work.

Rendering fidelity: approximation versus a browser

Where html2canvas differs from the live page

  • It paints from the DOM rather than capturing the browser’s final pixels. CSS properties that html2canvas does not implement, or implements differently, can change spacing, effects, fonts, and layout.
  • Images generally must be same-origin, unless the image server sends suitable CORS headers or you route them through a proxy.
  • Same-origin iframes can be supported recursively. Cross-origin iframes, and sandboxed iframes without allow-same-origin, are blocked by browser security.
  • Very tall or wide pages can exceed the browser’s canvas limits. As rough current guidance, Chrome/Chromium, Firefox, and desktop Safari are around 32,767 pixels per dimension; iOS Safari is lower and depends on available memory. An oversized canvas may be blank or partially rendered without throwing an exception.

Useful controls include useCORS, proxy, scale, windowWidth, windowHeight, x, y, width, height, foreignObjectRendering, and the data-html2canvas-ignore attribute. They help manage a capture; none guarantees pixel parity with a native screenshot.

Why browser rendering wins for arbitrary URLs

A browser engine evaluates the page’s layout, scripts, SVG, images, and canvas in the context of a navigated document. That is why PhantomJS can capture a URL that is not part of your current page, and why hosted services are usually better for public websites, login flows, responsive variants, and pages whose assets come from several origins. The trade-off is operational: you must manage credentials, privacy, network access, rendering time, and either a browser fleet or a vendor relationship.

Cross-origin, credentials, and security boundaries

For html2canvas, same-origin policy is the first design constraint. Set useCORS: true only when the remote image server actually permits your origin; otherwise configure a proxy you control. A proxy moves the trust boundary to your infrastructure and must be designed not to become an open request-forwarding service. Cross-origin iframes remain inaccessible to page JavaScript under normal browser rules.

PhantomJS and hosted renderers can navigate to external URLs, but that does not make private data safe by default. Treat cookies, authorization headers, user-agent overrides, and internal URLs as secrets. Restrict outbound network access, redact sensitive query strings from logs, and decide whether a third party may process the page before sending credentials to a hosted service.

For browser extensions, html2canvas’s own FAQ recommends the browser’s native screenshot APIs instead. Those APIs capture the browser surface rather than reconstructing it from DOM rules.

Hosted API choices and cost

1. ScreenshotNeo — the first hosted API to try

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports its status with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Its 63 options cover full-page capture with lazy images loaded; one-element capture by CSS selector; dark mode; 12 device presets or any viewport; retina scale; PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges; HTML/CSS-to-image; custom CSS and JavaScript; clicking an element before capture; hiding selectors; waits for a selector, delay, or network idle; blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; custom headers, cookies, user agent, and Authorization; timezone and geolocation; transparent backgrounds; image resizing; selectable cache TTL; signed links for public <img> tags; asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; bulk capture of 100 URLs per call; a usage API; an OpenAPI specification; and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

2. Urlbox — established hosted rendering with broader media outputs

Urlbox is a reasonable choice when its documented API patterns, extraction features, video output, or existing integration match your workflow. Its pricing page lists the following figures for Urlbox in 2026 (page accessed September 29, 2026):

Tier Monthly price Included renders
Lo-Fi $19 Up to 2,000
Hi-Fi $49 Up to 5,000
Ultra $99 Up to 15,000
Business $498 Not stated on the cited pricing figures
Enterprise From $3,000/month Not stated on the cited pricing figures

The page also advertises a seven-day free trial for several tiers. Compare not only the monthly allowance, but also whether failed renders, retries, browser wait time, storage, and extraction requests are charged under the plan you select.

Decision guide by project type

  • Dashboard “Export PNG” button: choose html2canvas when the page is same-origin and a close DOM-based representation is acceptable.
  • Client-side annotation or preview: choose html2canvas and capture only the relevant element with x, y, width, and height.
  • Existing PhantomJS test or archive: keep PhantomJS temporarily, pin it, isolate it, and add a migration plan with visual regression coverage.
  • Many public URLs, scheduled archives, PDFs, or videos: choose a hosted renderer. ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try when clean pages and predictable treatment of failed captures matter; Urlbox is another option when its extraction and media features fit.
  • Browser extension: use the browser’s native screenshot API rather than relying on html2canvas’s reconstruction.

Implementation examples

html2canvas in a browser

Install it in your application, then capture an element after its images and fonts have finished loading:

import html2canvas from 'html2canvas';

const panel = document.querySelector('#report');
if (!panel) throw new Error('Missing #report');

const canvas = await html2canvas(panel, {
  useCORS: true,
  scale: window.devicePixelRatio,
  backgroundColor: '#ffffff',
  windowWidth: document.documentElement.scrollWidth,
  windowHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
  data-html2canvas-ignore: undefined
});

const png = canvas.toDataURL('image/png');
const link = document.createElement('a');
link.href = png;
link.download = 'report.png';
link.click();

For elements that should never appear, add data-html2canvas-ignore to them. If the canvas is blank, reduce the capture dimensions, split a very long page into sections, and inspect cross-origin images before increasing scale.

PhantomJS legacy capture

var page = require('webpage').create();
page.viewportSize = { width: 1440, height: 900 };
page.open('https://example.com', function (status) {
  if (status !== 'success') {
    console.error('Load failed: ' + status);
    phantom.exit(1);
  }
  page.render('example.png');
  phantom.exit();
});

Use this style only in a controlled legacy environment. Add explicit waits for pages that render asynchronously, and compare output against a fixed set of URLs before changing the binary or its runtime.

Urlbox request model

Urlbox documents two integration styles: an embeddable render link that returns the render directly, and synchronous or asynchronous POST requests that return JSON. Select the asynchronous path when your application can accept a later result or webhook; it avoids holding an application request open while a page loads. Use the documented parameters for viewport, output type, waits, and extraction rather than assuming html2canvas options map one-to-one.

Performance, reliability, and cost planning

Performance

  • html2canvas is fast to start because it uses the current tab, but large DOM trees and high scale values consume browser memory.
  • PhantomJS startup and page-load time are yours to operate. Queue jobs and recycle processes rather than allowing one stuck page to block a worker indefinitely.
  • Hosted services add network latency but remove browser startup and patching from your application. Use asynchronous jobs for slow or high-volume pages and cache stable URLs where the service supports it.

Reliability

Define a success policy before storing an image: a loaded page, a non-blank image, and the expected selector are different checks. Record URL, viewport, wait strategy, output type, and error details. For private pages, test expiry and redirect behavior as well as the happy path.

Cost

Self-hosted html2canvas and PhantomJS have no per-render vendor fee, but engineering time, browser maintenance, queueing, and storage are real costs. Hosted plans are easier to budget when you know your monthly render count. ScreenshotNeo’s no-card free allowance and billing headers make failed-load behavior visible; Urlbox’s listed tiers begin at $19/month, with the exact treatment of retries and failures depending on its plan terms.

Common problems and fixes

The html2canvas image is missing

Cause: the image is cross-origin without permissive CORS headers. Fix: enable CORS on the image host, set useCORS: true, or proxy the asset through a service you control. A cross-origin iframe cannot be made readable merely by setting an html2canvas option.

The output does not match what users see

Cause: a CSS feature is unsupported or the capture is a DOM reconstruction. Fix: simplify the affected styling, try foreignObjectRendering where supported, or use a native browser/hosted renderer when pixel fidelity is a requirement.

The canvas is blank or cut off

Cause: the requested dimensions exceed a platform canvas limit or available memory. Fix: capture sections, lower scale, set explicit dimensions, and test on the least capable target browser, especially iOS Safari.

PhantomJS cannot render a modern page

Cause: QtWebKit is old and the project is suspended. Fix: treat the result as a migration signal; move the workflow to maintained headless Chromium tooling or a hosted renderer, while keeping a regression set for important URLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A hosted capture times out or returns a bot check

Cause: the page is slow, blocks automation, or requires interaction. Fix: configure an appropriate wait condition, viewport, headers, cookies, or click step; inspect the service’s status response; and do not classify a bot-check page as a successful screenshot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use html2canvas for a page that is partly inside a cross-origin iframe?

No. Browser security prevents html2canvas from reading a cross-origin iframe, and a sandboxed iframe without allow-same-origin is blocked as well. Capture the framed application from its own origin or use a browser-level renderer with the appropriate authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is PhantomJS suitable for a new production service?

Generally no. Its QtWebKit renderer can still be useful for a pinned legacy workflow, but the official project status is suspended. New production systems should use maintained browser automation or a hosted rendering API.

When should a capture job be asynchronous?

Use an asynchronous job when a page may take longer than an interactive request, when you are processing many URLs, or when you want webhook-driven retries and result storage. A direct browser export is better for an immediate user action.
