An HP laptop that says “plugged in, not charging” does not automatically need a new battery. The cause may be a charge limit, an incompatible or failing adapter, a USB-C port that does not accept power, a damaged charging port, Windows or firmware trouble, or a worn battery. Start with the outlet and charger, then run HP’s adapter and battery tests before buying parts.
Stop troubleshooting and seek service if the battery is swollen, the laptop casing is bulging, you smell burning, see sparks or melted plastic, or a cable or connector is damaged or abnormally hot. Unplug the charger if you can do so safely. Do not squeeze, puncture, open, or continue charging a swollen battery.
First, identify what “not charging” means
Note the exact Windows message and what happens when you unplug the adapter. These clues help separate a charger or port problem from a battery issue.
| Symptom | What it can indicate | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| “Plugged in, not charging” | The laptop detects external power but is not increasing the battery level. A charge-management limit, insufficient adapter power, temperature protection, battery fault, or charging-system problem is possible. | Check HP battery-health settings, adapter compatibility, and HP diagnostics. |
| “No power source connected” or no charging light | The laptop may not be detecting power from the outlet, cable, adapter, connector, or port. | Test the outlet and adapter connections; inspect the port and try a known-compatible HP adapter if available. |
| It runs on AC but shuts off as soon as you unplug it | A battery that cannot deliver usable power is likely, though a loose battery connection or charging-control fault is also possible. | Run HP Battery Check and review the Windows battery report. |
| It stays near 80%, 90%, or another level | Some HP models deliberately limit or delay charging to protect battery health. | Check Battery Health Manager or other model-specific charging settings before replacing anything. |
| It charges only when shut down | The adapter may be underpowered, the USB-C power supply may be inadequate, system load may exceed the power available, or the battery or charging system may be faulty. | Test with the correct HP adapter and run both adapter and battery diagnostics. |
| It charges only when the plug is held at an angle | A damaged cable, connector, or charging port is likely. | Stop bending the cable to make contact. Replace a damaged compatible adapter or arrange port service. |
| “Battery not detected” | The battery may be unseated, disconnected, failed, or not recognized by firmware or Windows. | Perform a power reset and run HP diagnostics. Only reseat a removable battery if your model permits it. |
HP’s troubleshooting flow recommends checking the adapter and battery and performing a hard reset before arranging repair. See HP’s battery and adapter troubleshooting guide.

1. Check the outlet, charger, cable, and port
- Test the outlet. Plug in a known-working lamp or other device. If you use a power strip, connect the laptop charger directly to the wall for this test.
- Reseat the connections. Check that the AC cable is firmly connected to the adapter brick and that the adapter’s laptop-side plug is fully inserted.
- Inspect the cable and connectors. Look for fraying, exposed wire, bent contacts, scorch marks, looseness, or unusual heat. Do not flex or twist a damaged cable to make it work.
- Inspect the charging port. Look for debris or physical damage. Remove only accessible dust using a soft, dry method. Do not insert metal objects or spray liquid into the port.
- Confirm adapter compatibility. The safest test is the adapter supplied with your HP laptop or a genuine HP replacement matched to the exact model. A connector that fits is not enough: output voltage, wattage, connector and, where relevant, polarity or identification features must also match. HP advises using the supplied or an official replacement adapter; see its guidance on laptop power problems.
If the laptop reports an incompatible or insufficient power source, or charging changes when the cable is moved, suspect the adapter, cable, connector, or port. A new battery will not repair those problems.
If your HP laptop charges over USB-C
USB-C charging depends on the exact model. Some HP laptops have multiple USB-C ports, and not all accept power; a port may support data without supporting charging. A USB-C phone charger may also provide too little power, while the cable may not be rated for the laptop’s required wattage.
- Use the USB-C port identified for charging or Power Delivery in your laptop’s markings or manual.
- Use a USB-C Power Delivery adapter and cable rated for the wattage your model requires.
- If your laptop came with a barrel-style adapter, do not assume its USB-C port can charge it.
Check the manual or HP support page for your exact product number. HP also notes that USB-C port capabilities vary in its charging troubleshooting guide.

2. Perform a power reset
A power reset can clear a temporary power-state or battery-detection problem. HP instructions differ by model and procedure: some specify holding the power button for about 15 seconds, while other guidance uses about 25 seconds. Treat these as model-dependent directions, not one universal timing.

- Shut down Windows completely.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the laptop and disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, displays, and external drives.
- If the battery is designed to be externally removable, remove it. Do not open the laptop to reach an internal battery unless you are qualified and following the service instructions for that model.
- Hold the power button for about 15 seconds. If the model-specific HP instructions specify a different hold time, follow those instead.
- Reconnect an externally removed battery, if applicable. Connect the correct adapter directly to the laptop and wall outlet, then start the computer.
Check whether the charging light or Windows battery message changes. If not, continue with diagnostics. HP provides model-specific power-reset and battery-detection instructions.
3. Run HP battery and AC adapter diagnostics
Testing both parts is more useful than guessing which one to replace. Menu names vary by model and HP Support Assistant version.
Battery Check in HP Support Assistant
- Open HP Support Assistant and select your computer.
- Open its troubleshooting or diagnostics area and run Battery Check.
- Record the result and copy any failure ID exactly as shown.
Use HP’s battery and adapter support page if Support Assistant is not installed or the menu differs.

- Adapter fails: The adapter or power-input path is suspect. A known-compatible adapter can help isolate the cause.
- Battery fails: The battery is a leading suspect; keep the failure ID for HP support or a repair provider.
- Both pass: Check charge limits, USB-C compatibility, Windows recognition, intermittent port or cable faults, and the charging circuit. A passed test does not rule out an intermittent fault.
- Tests will not run: Try HP Support Assistant or use the diagnostics options listed on the support page for your exact model.
4. Generate a Windows battery report
The Windows battery report can show whether the battery’s estimated full-charge capacity has declined. It does not by itself identify a bad adapter or prove that a battery must be replaced.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run:
powercfg /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopbattery-report.html" - Open battery-report.html from your desktop.
Review Design Capacity, Full Charge Capacity, Battery Capacity History, Recent Usage, and the battery life estimates. If cycle count is reported, record that too. A rough remaining-capacity estimate is:
Full Charge Capacity ÷ Design Capacity × 100
For example, a full-charge capacity of 30,000 mWh against a design capacity of 50,000 mWh is about 60% by this calculation. Treat it as context, not a pass/fail test: batteries can misreport capacity, and a battery may be faulty even when its estimated capacity is higher. HP’s guide treats capacity below 50% as a replacement consideration, not a universal failure threshold; see its battery troubleshooting advice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Check whether HP is limiting the charge
Some HP notebooks use Battery Health Manager or another battery-care setting to limit the maximum charge or delay charging. Depending on the model, a charge cap or a pause near full may be expected behavior rather than a failure. HP says some systems can enable a battery-health mode after extended AC use; details and controls vary by model. HP also describes delaying charging until the battery drops below about 94% to avoid repeated brief charging sessions.

Check for battery-health settings in the BIOS/Computer Setup, often opened by pressing F10 during startup, in HP Support Assistant, or in HP Power Manager on supported business systems. The exact setting and location depend on the laptop. See HP’s documentation on Battery Health Manager and battery charging behavior.
Do not disable a battery-health feature just to force a 100% reading unless you need the extra runtime and accept the trade-off: keeping a lithium-ion battery at a high charge for long periods can increase wear. If charging is stuck well below its configured limit or the laptop also reports an error, continue testing rather than assuming the feature explains everything.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Try Windows and firmware steps only with stable power
If the adapter connection is stable and diagnostics do not identify a failed part, try these software checks:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Restart Windows and note the exact battery message afterward, such as “plugged in, not charging,” “no battery detected,” or “slow charger.”
- Refresh the battery device in Windows, if needed. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Batteries, right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, choose Uninstall device, then restart. This may refresh detection; it is not a hardware repair or guaranteed fix. Labels can vary slightly by Windows version.
- Check HP updates for your exact product number. Review BIOS/UEFI, chipset, and power-management updates on the model’s HP support page. Install a BIOS update only with a reliable power connection and according to HP’s instructions. A power interruption during firmware installation can leave a computer unable to start.
Do not begin with a BIOS update while the adapter or charging connection is unstable. If the laptop cannot maintain reliable power, arrange service instead.

When calibration may help—and when it will not
Battery calibration may help when the percentage estimate is erratic and HP diagnostics do not report a hardware failure. It cannot repair a dead cell, swollen battery, damaged adapter or port, or failed charging circuit. Use the calibration instructions for your exact model, and only if the battery is physically normal and the laptop can remain powered safely during the process. Do not routinely deep-discharge a lithium-ion battery as maintenance. HP describes calibration and battery care in its battery guidance.
When to replace the charger, battery, or seek repair
Replace or service the charger when
- It has frayed or exposed wiring, a damaged plug, or abnormal heat.
- HP’s adapter test fails, or a known-compatible adapter restores charging.
- The laptop reports an insufficient or incompatible power source.
- Charging cuts in and out when the cable or plug moves.
Match the exact model, connector, output, and wattage. For USB-C, confirm the required Power Delivery support, port, and cable rating. Avoid choosing a universal adapter based on plug fit alone.
Consider battery replacement when
- HP Battery Check or the battery diagnostic reports a failure.
- The laptop shuts off immediately when unplugged, after you have confirmed the adapter is working.
- There is severe capacity loss or rapid drain that makes the battery unusable.
Check the laptop’s warranty first. If replacement is appropriate, match the exact product and battery part number; a series name alone is not enough. HP recommends obtaining genuine replacement batteries through HP dealers or vendors. A swollen, overheating, cracked, or otherwise physically damaged battery is a stop-use and service issue, not a routine replacement or calibration job.
Recommended Free Tools
Arrange professional service when
- The charging port is loose, scorched, or physically broken.
- Compatible adapters fail to restore power, or charging remains intermittent despite passing diagnostics.
- Both adapter and battery tests pass but charging still fails; the port or motherboard charging circuit may need inspection.
- The laptop has an internal battery and you are not equipped to service it safely.
Check coverage at HP’s warranty lookup or contact HP support before paying for parts or labor. Coverage varies by product, geography, battery type, warranty terms, and remaining coverage; do not assume a battery or repair is covered.
What to gather before contacting HP or a repair shop
- Exact laptop model and product number (and serial number for HP support).
- Adapter part number and wattage.
- The exact Windows battery or power message.
- HP Battery Check and AC Adapter/Battery diagnostic results, including failure IDs.
- Design Capacity and Full Charge Capacity from the battery report.
- Whether the laptop runs on AC and what happens when unplugged.
- Warranty status and any signs of port damage, unusual heat, or battery swelling.
These details help the technician distinguish an adapter, battery, port, or charging-circuit problem without replacing parts by guesswork.
