HP announced two Snapdragon X Elite notebooks on May 20, 2024: the consumer-oriented OmniBook X AI PC and the business-focused EliteBook Ultra AI PC. Both were scheduled to ship in the United States on June 18, 2024, with a 45-trillion-operations-per-second (TOPS) neural processing unit (NPU) for Copilot+ PC features. HP claimed up to 26 hours of battery life, but that figure came from a specific local-video test rather than ordinary mixed use.

The announcement was an important early Windows-on-ARM launch, not the debut of an HP desktop. As of August 16, 2026, the prices and availability below remain historical launch information; current stock, configurations and street prices require a live retailer check.

What HP announced

HP introduced two thin-and-light Windows laptops built on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite platform. The OmniBook X targets consumers, students, freelancers and mobile professionals. The EliteBook Ultra is aimed at businesses that need security, manageability and longer warranty coverage. HP sold the products as part of Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC generation and used “personalized AI” to describe a mix of Windows, HP and third-party features.

Why Snapdragon X Elite matters

Snapdragon X Elite is an ARM-based Windows platform using Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU architecture. Qualcomm lists a 12-core design, up to 4.2 GHz single- or dual-core boost depending on the chip variant, up to 42 MB of cache, integrated Adreno graphics and a Hexagon NPU rated at up to 45 TOPS. The NPU is a separate accelerator for supported AI inference, allowing the CPU and GPU to avoid handling every camera, audio or generative task.

ARM designs can deliver strong efficiency in thin laptops, but they also change the compatibility equation. Native ARM64 applications generally provide the best results; x86 and x64 Windows software may run through emulation. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite specifications and Windows-on-Snapdragon developer guidance explain the platform and porting options.

What makes a Copilot+ PC?

At launch, Qualcomm described Copilot+ PCs as requiring at least a 40-TOPS NPU, 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage, together with Windows 11 AI features and compatible applications. HP’s 45-TOPS NPU exceeded that launch threshold. The requirement describes the category at launch; it is not a guarantee that every future Windows feature will work on every machine carrying the label. See Qualcomm’s Copilot+ explanation.

What “personalized AI” means in practice

Camera and conferencing

Windows Studio Effects can provide automatic framing, background blur, background replacement and Spotlight effects. HP also highlighted Poly Camera Pro, which uses the NPU for conferencing enhancements while reducing CPU load. Availability depends on Windows, drivers, the application and the specific configuration.

HP and Microsoft software

HP described HP AI Companion as a tool for device optimization and local AI experiences. Windows Copilot and other Copilot+ features add Microsoft’s layer, while photo, video, audio and productivity applications may provide their own NPU-enabled functions.

Security and threat detection

For the EliteBook Ultra, HP connected machine-learning threat detection with Wolf Pro Security Next Generation Antivirus and a Microsoft Secured-Core PC design. These features are more relevant to managed business fleets and regulated work than to a casual home purchase.

Local does not mean entirely offline

An NPU can process supported operations on the laptop, but it does not make every AI feature private or disconnected. Qualcomm describes Copilot as hybrid: simpler operations may run locally while more complex requests use cloud processing. Check the feature’s connection requirements, data handling, Windows edition, region, account type and any subscription before assuming that prompts or files stay on the device. Qualcomm’s explanation is available on its Snapdragon AI PCs page.

Battery-life and performance claims

HP promoted up to 26 hours of battery life and called it a record for an ultra-mobile next-generation AI PC. HP’s figure came from internal continuous local-video playback testing with a Snapdragon X Elite 12-core platform, 16 GB of LPDDR5x-8400 memory and a 512 GB NVMe SSD, at 2.2K resolution and 200-nit brightness, with wireless enabled but not connected. Brightness, networking, Teams calls, browser tabs, synchronization, peripherals, workload and battery age can produce very different results. The detailed qualification appears in the HP announcement and its battery disclaimer.

HP also reported opening a large Excel file almost twice as fast, up to 12 hours of Microsoft Teams calls and up to 22 hours of Netflix streaming. Those are vendor results tied to HP’s test systems and methods, not universal performance guarantees. Qualcomm publishes additional vendor benchmarks on its product page; they should likewise be treated as platform claims rather than independent testing.

Windows-on-ARM compatibility: the key buying question

Before buying either model, test the exact software and hardware used in your work. Native ARM64 builds are preferable; emulated applications can be usable but may lose performance or features. ARM64EC lets an application combine native and emulated components, but it does not eliminate every legacy dependency.

  • Look for ARM64 versions of essential business, creative and development applications.
  • Verify plug-ins, macros, database tools and older accounting or scientific software.
  • Confirm ARM64 drivers for printers, scanners, docks, audio interfaces, cameras and other peripherals.
  • Test VPN, endpoint-security, identity, device-management and virtualization software with your IT team.
  • Check games individually, especially titles using kernel-level anti-cheat systems.
  • Use a return window or a small pilot fleet before a broad corporate deployment.

A program that launches successfully can still perform poorly if it relies on emulation, unsupported drivers or plug-ins. Qualcomm maintains an application-compatibility resource at Windows apps on Snapdragon.

Advantages and trade-offs

Potential advantage What it means for a buyer
Efficiency and mobility Good fit for travel, meetings, email, browser work, documents and video calls when the workload is light to moderate.
Dedicated NPU Supported camera, audio and AI workloads can run more efficiently than relying only on the CPU or GPU.
Business protection The EliteBook Ultra adds enterprise-oriented security, support and warranty positioning.
ARM compatibility risk Legacy applications, drivers, plug-ins, virtualization and anti-cheat games may require testing or may not work.
Graphics limits Integrated Adreno graphics do not make these substitutes for discrete-GPU gaming or CUDA-focused workstations.
Feature dependency NPU hardware alone does not activate every AI feature; software support, updates, region and subscriptions can matter.

EliteBook Ultra

Consider it for an organization or professional that needs business security, support, fleet deployment and the three-year warranty stated in HP’s launch material. The premium over the OmniBook X is harder to justify for a casual user who will not use those capabilities.

Neither model

Choose another platform if you require guaranteed support for specialized legacy software, complex plug-in ecosystems, discrete-GPU rendering, CUDA workloads, high-end gaming or untested peripherals. Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI Windows laptops, Apple-silicon MacBooks, and other Snapdragon X systems from ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft, Samsung and Acer provide relevant alternatives. Qualcomm’s broader Snapdragon X-series lineup shows why comparing platforms and configurations is more useful than treating HP as an isolated category.

Availability and buying checklist in 2026

The $1,199.99 OmniBook X and $1,699.99 EliteBook Ultra prices are U.S. launch prices from 2024, not verified August 2026 prices. Check the official HP site or an authorized retailer for current stock, configuration and warranty terms. Compare the exact Snapdragon variant, RAM, storage, display, ports, battery, return policy and whether the unit is new, refurbished or clearance stock.

  1. List every application, plug-in, driver, game and peripheral you need.
  2. Confirm native ARM64 support or acceptable emulation for each item.
  3. Check whether the desired AI feature is local, hybrid or cloud-based and whether it requires a subscription or update.
  4. Compare current street prices with Intel, AMD, Apple-silicon and other Snapdragon alternatives.
  5. For business use, pilot VPN, security, identity, management and line-of-business software before deployment.

HP’s sustainability statements included 50% recycled aluminum in covers, sustainably sourced packaging, and EPEAT Climate+ Gold and ENERGY STAR claims; certification status and configuration details should be checked for the specific current product.

The Bottom Line

HP’s OmniBook X and EliteBook Ultra were notable first-wave Copilot+ notebooks: efficient Snapdragon X Elite hardware, a 45-TOPS NPU and strong battery claims in thin designs. Their value depends less on the “AI PC” label than on two checks: whether your applications and peripherals work well on Windows on ARM, and whether current pricing justifies the trade-offs. The OmniBook X suits mainstream mobile users; the EliteBook Ultra makes more sense for managed business deployments.
