Short answer: wkhtmltoimage has no documented command-line option for selecting an ICC color profile. Its published image settings cover format, dimensions, transparency, cropping and JPEG quality, but they do not define how embedded source profiles are interpreted, how colors are composited, or whether an output profile is embedded. Those details can vary by executable, package and output format, so treat color behavior as something to verify with the exact build you deploy.

What wkhtmltoimage renders

wkhtmltoimage is a headless command-line renderer built on the Qt WebKit engine. It loads a web page, lays out the HTML and CSS, paints the page, and writes an image file. Headless operation explains why it can run without a display server; it does not establish a particular ICC conversion pipeline.

The official image-settings reference documents these output choices:

Setting What it controls What it does not establish
Format JPEG, PNG, BMP or SVG output Which ICC profile is selected or embedded
transparent Whether the page background can remain transparent Color-space conversion for RGB or alpha values
screenWidth The virtual screen width used for layout Display-profile simulation
smartWidth Automatic width behavior during rendering Color management
quality JPEG quality when writing JPEG output ICC tagging or a colorimetric transform

The settings documentation identifies version 1.8.17 and lists image formats as jpg, png, bmp and svg. It does not list an ICC-profile parameter. That is a statement about the documented interface, not proof that every build has identical internal color behavior.

Separate the four color-profile questions

“Does wkhtmltoimage support color profiles?” can mean several different operations. Test them independently instead of looking for one yes-or-no answer.

1. Decoding an input image

A page may contain JPEG, PNG or other raster assets with an embedded profile. The available documentation does not promise that wkhtmltoimage honors, converts or ignores that profile when decoding the image. A packaged binary may therefore produce different pixels from another package even when the HTML and asset files are identical.

2. CSS and canvas color values

CSS colors and rendered text are converted into the renderer’s internal pixel representation. The official wkhtmltoimage description names Qt WebKit, but it does not specify the working color space or an ICC policy for CSS, canvas, gradients or compositing.

3. Compositing and transparency

Layers, antialiasing and transparent backgrounds are raster operations. Enabling transparent changes how the background is written; it is not an ICC conversion switch. A later application that places the transparent image over a different background can therefore show a different perceived result.

4. Tagging the output file

The consulted settings reference does not promise that PNG, JPEG or BMP output receives an embedded ICC profile, nor does it say that an input profile is copied through. Verify the metadata of the actual file rather than assuming the source tag survives.

Why the PDF color option is not an ICC option

The global settings documentation for PDF output includes a colorMode choice between Color and Grayscale. That setting belongs to PDF generation. It is not a profile selector for wkhtmltoimage and should not be used as evidence that image output performs an ICC conversion.

Qt 6 documentation for QColorSpace::fromIccProfile provides useful background: it can parse a restricted class of three-component, matrix-based RGB-XYZ profiles and may return an invalid color space for unsupported profiles. However, that API describes Qt 6.5.12. The official wkhtmltoimage project description identifies Qt WebKit without establishing the Qt version or color-management implementation inside your executable. Modern Qt 6 behavior cannot be assumed for an older or custom wkhtmltoimage package.

  1. Record the executable. Save the complete output of wkhtmltoimage --version. Also record whether it came from a vendor package, a precompiled distribution or a source build; those choices can bundle different Qt and WebKit dependencies.
  2. Create a minimal fixture. Use a small HTML file containing flat CSS swatches, text on solid backgrounds, a gradient and copies of known test images. Keep external fonts, scripts and network requests out of this fixture so that rendering changes are not confused with loading failures.
  3. Render PNG first. PNG avoids JPEG compression while you compare raster values and metadata. For example:
wkhtmltoimage --format png --screen-width 1200 fixture.html fixture.png
  1. Run a separate JPEG test. Keep the viewport and fixture unchanged and set a fixed quality value:
wkhtmltoimage --format jpg --quality 95 --screen-width 1200 fixture.html fixture-q95.jpg
  1. Inspect pixels and metadata. Use a color-managed image application to view both files under the same display conditions. Separately inspect whether each file contains an ICC profile, its color-type metadata and its bit depth. A viewer’s appearance and the file’s embedded metadata answer different questions.
  2. Repeat with normalized assets. Convert a copy of each source image to an explicitly chosen sRGB representation with a tool that documents ICC conversion, then render again. If the discrepancy shrinks, report that as an observation for this build and fixture, not as a universal wkhtmltoimage rule.
  3. Keep an evidence record. Store the HTML, source images, command line, version output, output files and metadata inspection. This lets you detect changes after an operating-system or package upgrade.

Comparing a PNG and a JPEG in different viewers can create a false diagnosis. PNG gives you a cleaner first test; JPEG quality introduces quantization and should be evaluated only after the PNG path is understood.

Diagnose common color differences

Symptom Likely variable Action
Browser preview is more saturated than the screenshot The browser may be color-managed while the wkhtmltoimage build’s profile handling is unspecified. Render a known sRGB asset, inspect profile metadata, and compare in the same color-managed viewer.
Only photographs look wrong Embedded source profiles may be interpreted differently from untagged CSS colors. Test the same photo after explicit conversion to the target space; record the result for the exact binary.
PNG and JPEG do not match JPEG compression, quality and viewer behavior add variables. Use PNG as the baseline, then test JPEG with a fixed quality value.
Colors change after upgrading the package The executable may contain a different Qt/WebKit dependency set. Pin the old and new --version outputs, rerun the fixture and compare pixels and metadata.
Transparent output looks different when placed on a page The background behind transparent pixels changed, or premultiplication is handled differently downstream. Compare against a solid-background render and inspect alpha-channel behavior in the consuming application.
A profile appears in one output but not another Profile metadata policy can vary by format or build. Inspect each format independently; do not assume metadata is copied from the input.
Grayscale PDF output was expected to explain image colors colorMode is a PDF setting, not an image ICC control. Remove that assumption and test wkhtmltoimage’s image output directly.

Make color-critical output predictable

Pin the complete rendering environment

Store the exact executable, package version, operating system image, command-line flags, HTML, CSS and assets. A “same version” label from two distributors does not necessarily mean identical bundled libraries.

Normalize assets before rendering

If your workflow requires a defined input space, preprocess photographs and illustrations with a color-management tool that explicitly documents ICC conversion. Keep the converted files alongside the originals and record the intended output space. This moves the critical transform to a component whose behavior you can verify instead of relying on undocumented renderer behavior.

Choose an output format for the job

Need Practical first choice Reason
Pixel comparison or regression testing PNG Avoids JPEG compression while you isolate renderer and profile differences.
Small photographic files JPEG with fixed quality Useful after the uncompressed baseline is understood; quality changes the pixels.
Simple source asset with vector intent SVG, if your downstream pipeline accepts it SVG is listed as an output format, but downstream rasterization still has its own color behavior.
Transparency PNG with the transparent setting as needed Preserves an alpha channel; the consuming application still determines final compositing appearance.

Validate in the destination environment

Open the generated file in the same color-managed viewer, browser and display conditions used by your audience or production pipeline. Confirm profile metadata separately from visual appearance. A file can look acceptable in one viewer while lacking the tag another workflow requires.

Performance and reliability considerations

Color testing adds work because every meaningful change should be rendered with identical inputs. Start with a small fixture, then test a representative page. Fixing screenWidth, format and JPEG quality makes comparisons cheaper and easier to automate. Keep network-dependent pages out of the first experiment; a missing stylesheet or image can look like a color defect.

For production, fail the job when the executable version changes unexpectedly, when an asset is missing, or when output metadata does not meet your documented requirement. If the requirement is “all images must carry profile X,” verify that property after rendering rather than inferring it from the command line.

Bottom line

wkhtmltoimage’s documented interface does not let you choose an ICC profile. Because the official material also leaves input-profile interpretation, working color space and output tagging unspecified, the defensible approach is to pin the exact build, normalize color-critical assets, render a controlled PNG fixture, inspect pixels and metadata, and document observations for that environment. Do not treat PDF’s colorMode as an image ICC setting or assume that a newer Qt color API describes your binary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wkhtmltoimage embed an ICC profile in PNG or JPEG output?

The published image settings do not promise profile embedding or stripping. Inspect the generated file from the exact executable and format you use.

Can I force sRGB with a wkhtmltoimage option?

No documented image option selects sRGB or another ICC profile. Normalize source assets before rendering if your workflow requires a defined color space.

Will Qt 6 QColorSpace behavior predict my wkhtmltoimage result?

No. Qt 6.5.12 documentation is background information; wkhtmltoimage packages may use different Qt/WebKit versions and implementations.
