Uber’s India pricing changes are not simply a story about cheaper rides. In February 2025, the company moved autos and other two- and three-wheelers away from per-ride commission and toward a fixed driver fee reportedly starting at ₹9 a day. Cab pricing was a separate matter: drivers interviewed that year reported lower fares in some categories while Uber continued to take a commission. By 2026, subscription and recharge-style plans had spread across more of the market, but the exact terms still vary by city and vehicle type.
Two different changes: driver fees and rider fares
The key to understanding Uber’s India strategy is to separate what a passenger pays from what a driver pays the platform. A lower fare does not necessarily mean a lower commission, and ending a per-ride commission does not make a platform free to use.
In February 2025, Uber replaced its traditional per-ride commission for autos and other two- and three-wheelers with a daily subscription fee. Rest of World reported that the early fee started at ₹9 a day. That was a launch-period figure, not a confirmed standard rate across India; fees and plans may differ by city, vehicle category and date.

In the same report, drivers said fares had fallen by about 40% in some categories, while one Delhi driver described a 25% commission. Those are attributed, period-specific accounts—not a universal fare cut or a current national commission schedule. The combination they describe matters: if a passenger fare falls while the commission percentage remains, the driver’s take from that trip can fall too.

Why platforms are replacing percentages with fixed fees
A percentage commission rises with each fare. Subscription or recharge plans instead charge drivers a fixed amount—daily, per trip, or through another plan—so the platform’s deduction is less directly tied to the fare on every ride. This makes the cost easier to see, but shifts more demand risk to the driver.
Several pressures are pushing the change:
- Competition in lower-cost rides. Rapido has built a prominent position in bike taxis and autos, categories where price and driver access are important. Namma Yatri differentiated itself with direct payment and a no-percentage-commission pitch.
- Driver resistance to commissions. A share of every fare can feel unpredictable, particularly when fares, incentives and trip volumes change. Fixed plans offer a simpler headline deduction.
- Pressure on platform economics. Apps are competing for both riders and drivers. A lower rider price can help attract bookings, while a fixed driver fee can change how the platform earns revenue.
- Tax uncertainty. Platforms and policymakers are debating whether subscription or discovery-based services should face the same GST treatment as platforms that set fares or collect passenger payments. That dispute is not the same thing as a company changing its commercial fee model.
By 2026, reporting described subscription or recharge models at Uber, Ola and Rapido in multiple segments. Financial Express reported on the sector’s GST debate and the spread of these models. The presence of a plan in one category or city should not be read as proof that a platform has eliminated commissions everywhere in India.
When does a subscription help a driver?
The comparison is straightforward in principle:
- Commission model cost: total fares multiplied by the commission rate.
- Subscription model cost: the fixed platform fee for the relevant period or plan.
For example, if a driver earns more fares, a fixed fee may work out cheaper than surrendering a percentage of every trip. If the driver is online for only a short time, receives few bookings or faces a weak-demand day, that same fee can absorb a larger share of earnings. The comparison also depends on whether the plan charges per day, only on days when rides are taken, or through some other rule.

A more realistic driver calculation includes far more than the platform charge:
Net daily earnings = fares − platform fees − fuel or charging − maintenance − insurance and permits − unpaid travel and waiting time − cancellations and other deductions
Zero commission, where offered, means there is no percentage cut under that plan. It does not mean the driver keeps the full fare as profit. Fuel, vehicle costs, taxes, plan fees and unpaid time remain.

What lower fares mean for riders—and why drivers may respond differently
Riders should compare the final quoted fare, pickup time and likelihood of a completed trip—not just a headline base price. A zero-commission driver plan does not guarantee that the passenger’s fare is lower. A platform could use its economics to subsidize fares, pay incentives, retain revenue or do some combination of those things.

Driver and rider interests can diverge. Lower fares may bring more bookings, but if drivers’ net earnings fall, some may reject trips, go offline or use competing apps. That can mean longer waits or more cancellations for passengers. Conversely, a fee structure that improves driver economics may not produce the lowest passenger fare. The outcome depends on local demand, pricing, incentives, driver supply and the costs of completing each trip.
For a practical comparison, check the total fare including tolls, parking or cancellation charges; pickup estimate and recent availability; whether autos, cabs or bike taxis operate in your area; and the platform’s payment, receipt and safety features. Dynamic pricing and local rules can change both price and availability. Bike-taxi legality and service coverage may vary by state.
Rapido, Namma Yatri and the limits of market-share snapshots
India’s ride-hailing market is not one uniform contest. Cabs, autos, bike taxis, three-wheelers, airport trips and premium rides can have different competitors and economics; the same app’s reach can vary substantially from one city to another.

The 2025 Rest of World report cited figures putting Uber at 50% of cab-hailing and Rapido at 31% and Ola at 26% of the scooter and three-wheeler market. These figures are attributed to that report, and its account does not establish a clear measurement date or methodology. They are segment-specific snapshots, not a definitive national ranking for 2026. The report also cited Rapido figures of 2.5 million daily rides and 31 million active users, and nearly 75 million rides for Namma Yatri since 2022; the available account does not supply enough methodology or timing to use those as directly comparable measures.

Namma Yatri matters because it made a commission-free, direct-payment proposition visible to drivers and riders. It joined the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) in 2023. ONDC is intended as shared digital commerce infrastructure through which compatible buyer and seller applications can connect; it is not simply another ride-hailing app, nor does using it automatically guarantee lower fares or higher driver earnings. Uber signed a pact with ONDC in 2024 to explore integration, but the 2025 report said that integration had not happened at that time.

In late March 2025, Home Minister Amit Shah announced a proposed commission-free alternative called Sahkar Taxi. Later coverage referred to the government-backed cooperative service as Bharat Taxi, describing a flat-fee, zero-commission approach and Namma Yatri’s technology role. The names belong to the development of the proposed service, rather than necessarily to two unrelated platforms.
A cooperative structure could change how a service is organized and who participates in its governance, but the label alone does not establish how much control drivers have over pricing, operations or surplus. Nor does it prove that the service is widely available. The available reporting does not establish a complete, independently verified national rollout across cities and vehicle categories. Riders and drivers should check local availability and current terms rather than assume it is a like-for-like alternative in every market. Mint’s reporting describes the cooperative and technology context.
The tax question is related but distinct. Reporting in 2026 described a debate over the 5% GST framework for passenger transport through electronic commerce operators, with platforms such as Rapido arguing that zero-commission or discovery-only models should be treated differently. The dispute involves legal classification, who collects tax, whether the app controls fares or payments, and how the service is structured—not just whether a company calls its driver charge a subscription. NDTV Profit reported that the GST Council was to review taxation. The cited reporting does not establish a final, nationally applicable resolution, so it would be premature to say the question is settled.

The real shift: who carries the risk?
Per-ride commissions make the platform’s revenue track ride value; fixed fees make the driver’s platform cost more predictable but can leave the driver paying even when bookings are scarce, depending on the plan. Either structure can be made more or less attractive through rider fares, incentives, access to bookings and plan rules. Introductory prices may also change.
For drivers, the useful comparison is effective net income over a representative week—not the advertised commission rate or a single good day. For riders, it is the completed trip at a reasonable total price, not a platform’s fee label. Uber’s move is part of a wider shift in Indian ride-hailing economics: the competition is increasingly about how platforms charge for access to demand, and who bears the cost when demand fluctuates.
Figures and developments are dated: the fare and fee accounts above were reported in 2025, while later coverage through 2026 described wider adoption of fixed-fee models and an ongoing tax debate. Actual fares, plan terms and availability are location- and category-specific.
