Write a unique, accurate description for each page, enter it in Yoast SEO’s Search appearance field, and treat roughly 155 characters as a drafting target—not a Google limit. Google may replace your text with a passage from the page when that better matches a search query, so the visible content must support the promise made in the description.

What a meta description does

A meta description is an HTML description of a page. Search engines may show it below the result title, giving a searcher context before clicking. It should accurately explain what the page offers and help the right visitor decide whether it is relevant.

Yoast’s developer specification says: “Every public page on a website should contain a unique, useful editorial summary of the content/purpose of that page,” output in a meta description tag. That makes the description an editorial summary, not a list of keywords or a promise that Google must display verbatim.

Yoast’s current guidance says a practical drafting target is about 155 characters. Its June 23, 2025 guidance observes that many snippets fall around 120–156 characters, but there is no single ideal length. Google can truncate, expand, or rewrite the text for different searches. A character count is therefore a writing aid, not a ranking rule or guaranteed display width.

Yoast states that a meta description has no direct ranking benefit. Its job is to set expectations and earn an informed click. No fixed character count guarantees a higher click-through rate or ranking.

Plan the description before opening WordPress

Match the page and the searcher

Identify the page’s audience, subject, and likely intent. A product page should state a meaningful differentiator; an informational page should promise the answer or practical outcome the article actually delivers. A description for a pricing page, for example, should mention plans or billing, while a tutorial should name the task and the result.

Put the useful information first

Draft one concise sentence and lead with the page’s most important fact. If Google shortens the snippet, the remaining opening still needs to make sense. Use direct, active wording such as “Compare…” or “Learn how to…” when that accurately describes the page.

Use a keyphrase only when it fits

Include the page’s focus keyphrase when it reads naturally and describes the content precisely. Do not repeat a phrase awkwardly or add terms that the page does not answer. Read the sentence aloud: clarity is more valuable than forcing an exact-match phrase.

Make every page distinct

Boilerplate such as “Welcome to our website. Learn more here” gives searchers no useful reason to choose one URL over another. Write a separate summary for each important page. A template can provide a fallback, but a page-specific description is preferable when the page has a distinct purpose.

Write a meta description in the WordPress editor

  1. Open the post or page in WordPress.

  2. Open the Yoast SEO panel and choose Search appearance. The exact panel position can vary with the WordPress editing interface and Yoast product version.

  3. Click the Meta description field and enter your sentence.

  4. Watch Yoast’s search preview and length feedback while editing. Use the feedback to spot an overly long or empty draft, but do not treat the preview as a promise of Google’s final snippet.

  5. Save or update the page, then view the public URL and confirm that the description matches what a visitor will find.

Yoast’s Content Preview feature is listed for Yoast SEO, Yoast SEO Premium, Yoast SEO for Shopify, Yoast WooCommerce SEO, and Yoast SEO AI+. Packaging can change, so check the edition installed on your site. AI Generate suggestions are described as a Premium feature; you can always write and edit the text yourself.

Homepage descriptions use a different route

Homepage showing your latest posts

In Yoast’s documented route, go to Yoast SEO settings → Content types → Homepage, then edit the homepage description. This is a settings field rather than the ordinary post meta box.

Static homepage

If WordPress displays a page as your static homepage, open that page in the editor and use its Yoast Search appearance settings. The feedback shown for the homepage field can differ from the usual post/page meta box. If you need the standard length feedback, draft the sentence in a regular post first, then transfer the edited copy to the homepage.

Templates, blank fields, and replacement variables

Yoast can use a configured replacement-variable pattern when no page-specific value is supplied. A page-specific description takes precedence over that pattern. Yoast’s stated default is to output no meta description rather than invent an automatic one.

If a field is blank, check whether your site has a description template configured. Then decide whether the template genuinely describes that page type. For high-value pages, enter a specific summary instead of relying on generic variables. Avoid placing sensitive information, temporary promotions, or claims that may become inaccurate in a site-wide template.

Why Google may show different text

A written meta description is a suggestion. Google may select a passage from the page that better matches the exact query, so two searches can produce different snippets for the same URL. Yoast’s historical explanation quotes Google’s Danny Sullivan: “Snippets are automatically created from page content and may vary in length. There’s no way for you to control how much will actually be displayed.” The quotation appears in Yoast’s article and should not be read as a fixed display limit.

The practical response is to make the supplied description representative and improve the page’s visible introduction, headings, and answer paragraphs. Do not write a description that promises information the page does not contain merely to influence a hypothetical snippet.

Verify the HTML after publishing

  1. Open the public page in a browser, view its source, and search for meta name="description".

  2. Confirm there is exactly one valid description tag and that its content is the sentence you intended.

  3. Check that the tag is inside the document’s <head> and that quotation marks and HTML escaping are valid.

  4. Review robots directives. A nosnippet directive or max-snippet: 0 prevents a text snippet from being shown.

A practical writing checklist

  • Accuracy: Does the page deliver exactly what the sentence promises?
  • Uniqueness: Could a searcher distinguish this URL from every other page on the site?
  • Specificity: Does it name the subject, audience, outcome, product, or key differentiator?
  • Order: Is the most useful information near the beginning?
  • Readability: Is the wording active, natural, and free of keyword repetition?
  • Length: Is it concise, with roughly 155 characters as a practical starting point rather than a hard limit?
  • Page support: Does the opening copy on the page reinforce the same answer?
  • Technical output: Is there one valid tag, with no snippet-blocking directive?

Troubleshooting common Yoast problems

The field is missing

Open the Yoast panel and look for Search appearance. If it is not visible, expand the panel or check the editor’s preferences and installed Yoast modules. The precise interface varies by WordPress editor and product version.

The preview turns orange or red

Shorten the sentence, remove repeated wording, and move the page’s main value to the beginning. Treat the color as guidance; do not replace a clear, accurate sentence with unnatural copy solely to satisfy a bar.

Google shows the old or a completely different description

Inspect the live source for one valid tag, then check whether the page content better answers the query than the supplied sentence. Also check for nosnippet or max-snippet: 0. Google can choose page text even when Yoast outputs the intended tag.

No description tag appears

Check whether the field is blank and whether a template is configured. Yoast’s default behavior is to omit a description rather than generate one automatically. A theme, caching layer, or another SEO extension can also alter output; resolve duplicate or conflicting plugins before testing again.

Several pages have the same description

Replace generic templates on important URLs with page-specific copy. Describe each page’s distinct subject, audience, or action, and inspect the source of representative pages to find the duplicated value.

Or skip the browser setup

If the work around this article includes documenting the live page, an API can capture the rendered result without configuring a browser. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

Cost and reliability notes for a documentation workflow

Capture only the URLs and states you need, use a wait condition for JavaScript-rendered content, and choose caching when the page does not change frequently. For repeatable archives, set the viewport, device scale, timezone, user agent, and any required cookies explicitly. Inspect the response headers to distinguish a clean billed capture from a failed load, bot check, blank page, or cache hit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave the Yoast meta description blank?

Yes, but Yoast’s documented default is to output no description rather than create an automatic one. Check templates and add a page-specific summary when the URL matters to searchers.

Does changing a meta description change rankings immediately?

No guaranteed ranking effect follows from a character count or edit. Google must recrawl the page, and it may still select different page text for a query.

Should every description end with a call to action?

Only when the action is a natural, accurate next step. A concrete explanation of the page is more important than adding “click” or “learn more” to every URL.

How do I check which description Google is using?

Search the page with representative queries after recrawling, and compare the result with the live source and visible page copy. Google can vary the snippet by query.
