A great blog post starts with a reader’s need, then answers it in an order that is easy to follow. Define who the post is for, decide what that person should be able to do or understand, outline the necessary information, and revise until every section earns its place. There is no required template or Google-preferred word count; the right structure and length depend on the question.

1. Decide who the post is for and what it should do

Before drafting, complete two sentences: “This post is for…” and “After reading it, the reader should be able to…” Be specific. “People interested in laptops” is broad; “students choosing a laptop for note-taking and video calls” gives you a reader and a practical task.

Use that task to decide what belongs in the post. Google’s people-first content guidance asks whether content serves an intended audience, demonstrates appropriate expertise, and leaves readers with enough knowledge to achieve their goal. It also warns against creating content primarily to attract search traffic. A trending phrase alone is not a reason to publish: the post should address a real question with reliable, useful information.

2. Gather the information the answer requires

List the facts, steps, explanations, and examples a reader needs to complete the task. Check factual claims against reliable sources, especially when details can change, such as software settings, prices, availability, or policies. If you cannot verify a claim, leave it out or state clearly what is known and what is uncertain.

Ask what your post can contribute beyond material already available. That might be a clearer explanation, a useful example, an original perspective, or a well-organized answer to a specific reader problem. Google’s guidance emphasizes accuracy, originality, and substantial value rather than simply rephrasing other pages.

3. Build a structure that follows the reader’s question

Put information in the order a reader needs it. Someone learning a process usually needs prerequisites before steps and troubleshooting after them. Someone comparing options needs the criteria before the differences. There is no universal blog-post template: let the subject and the reader’s task determine the sections.

Use this flexible outline as a starting point, not a formula:

  1. Specific title: Say what the post covers in language readers will recognize.
  2. Opening: Identify the question and the practical help the post provides.
  3. Main sections: Explain the answer in a logical sequence, with descriptive headings.
  4. Examples or evidence: Include them where they make an explanation easier to apply or verify.
  5. Ending: Give a useful takeaway or next step if the reader needs one.

For a post about troubleshooting a slow phone, for example, a useful sequence might be to identify the symptoms, check the simplest likely causes, try safe fixes, and explain when a more serious repair may be needed. The outline serves the reader’s task; a fixed number of sections would not make it better.

4. Write an opening and sections that deliver on the promise

Lead with the answer or outcome instead of a long warm-up. Tell readers what the post will help them do, then provide the information needed to do it. In each section, keep one main idea in focus and use concrete details—such as an exact setting name, a clear example, or a step in a process—when they help the reader act.

Use headings that describe the section rather than vague labels. Break up dense passages when a list, sequence, or comparison would be easier to scan. Google’s SEO Starter Guide recommends well-organized text, short sections, and headings that help people navigate. Clear, concise web writing serves the same purpose: it lets readers find the part they need without losing the explanation.

5. Revise for usefulness, clarity, and accuracy

Revision is more than proofreading. Read the post as someone who arrived with the question it promises to answer. Check whether the answer is complete, the order makes sense, and every section helps the reader reach the intended outcome.

  • Promise: Does the title accurately describe the page, and does the opening deliver on it?
  • Relevance: Does each section contribute to the reader’s task? Remove detours and repetition.
  • Evidence: Are factual claims accurate and supported by reliable sources? Qualify details that depend on a date, region, edition, or other condition.
  • Clarity: Can a reader understand the language and follow any instructions without guessing?
  • Original value: Does the post add useful explanation, information, or examples instead of merely restating existing pages?

Google’s content self-assessment and SEO guidance encourage publishers to consider originality, value, accuracy, and ease of understanding. Those are better revision checks than adding words just to make a post longer.

6. Use SEO to help people find and understand the post

Write a descriptive title and headings that accurately reflect the content. Use the words readers need to understand the topic naturally, rather than forcing in repeated search phrases. Link to related pages when a link helps readers explore a relevant term or continue a task; a link should make sense in context.

Google explains that it may draw on a page’s title and headings when generating title links in search, and that links help people and search engines discover related pages. These practices can improve understanding and navigation, but they do not guarantee a particular ranking. Google says there is no secret that automatically puts a site first, and it does not recommend writing to a particular word count because of a claimed preference.

Optional: Article structured data

If you manage the website, Google’s Article structured data guidance explains markup that can help Google understand an article page and may improve how its title, images, and dates are presented in search. Structured data is a technical addition, not a requirement for writing a useful post or a promise of better rankings.

A final perspective on publishing

In a 2014 Wiley press release, author and marketer Ann Handley said, “If you have a web site, you are a publisher.” The remark is a reminder of the responsibility involved in putting information online, not a current Google rule. For broader instruction on writing and content creation, Wiley describes the 2022 second edition of Handley’s Everybody Writes as a practical guide to content creation, production, and publishing; it is further reading, not a prerequisite for writing a blog post.
