To watch live TV with HDHomeRun, connect a compatible tuner to an antenna and your router, scan for channels, then open the HDHomeRun app on a supported device on the same home network. The tuner receives the TV signal; it is not a streaming service, and you do not need an HDHomeRun DVR subscription just to watch live channels.
What HDHomeRun does—and what it does not
HDHomeRun is a network TV tuner. It receives over-the-air broadcasts through an antenna, then makes available channels accessible to compatible devices on your home network. Some models can also receive certain compatible cable signals, but that does not mean they unlock subscription channels or replace a cable provider’s set-top box. SiliconDust explains the supported signal types and limitations in its HDHomeRun FAQ.
The usual setup is antenna → HDHomeRun → Ethernet to router → viewing app. The tuner generally connects to the router by Ethernet; your computer, phone, TV, or console can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. HDHomeRun supplies neither Netflix-style internet channels nor a universal way to watch your local tuner while away from home.

Check your tuner and signal before setup
HDHomeRun models differ in broadcast support, tuner count, and DVR-storage options. In the U.S., FLEX DUO and QUATRO and comparable CONNECT models are generally ATSC 1.0/QAM products with two or four tuners. FLEX 4K and CONNECT 4K have four tuners, of which two support ATSC 3.0/1.0 and two are ATSC 1.0-only. FLEX models also offer a USB-storage path for DVR use. Check the current FLEX and CONNECT specifications rather than assuming every model has the same capabilities.

ATSC 3.0 reception depends on local station availability, and receiving an ATSC 3.0 signal does not guarantee that every device can play every channel. DRM-encrypted broadcasts, app support, and device decoding can limit playback. “4K” in a model name also does not mean local stations are broadcasting all content in 4K; see SiliconDust’s ATSC 3.0 information.
One tuner is needed for each tuner-dependent simultaneous channel stream or recording. A two-tuner device is therefore a sensible starting point for one or two different live channels at once; a four-tuner model offers more headroom for multiple viewers and overlapping recordings. Exact tuner sharing depends on the app and viewing situation, so do not treat the tuner count as a promise of unlimited viewers.
Set up HDHomeRun and scan channels
- Connect the antenna. Run its coaxial cable to the tuner’s antenna input. Reception depends on location, antenna placement, wiring, and interference. If you use an amplifier, splitter, or long cable run, these can affect signal quality.
- Connect the tuner to your router. Use Ethernet from the HDHomeRun to the router or network switch, then connect its power adapter. The normal setup is not to make the tuner a Wi-Fi client. The vendor’s installation instructions show the antenna, Ethernet, and power connections.
- Open the local setup page or utility. On many current units, try hdhomerun.local in a browser. If you have multiple units or that address does not resolve, use the device-ID address shown on the tuner, such as
http://104fffff.local. A local configuration page is not the same thing as a full TV-viewing app. - Run a channel scan. Choose the channel-detection or scan option, wait for it to finish, and save the lineup. Mark wanted stations as favorites or hide channels you do not want to browse.
- Install the viewer. Get the HDHomeRun app for the device from its app store or SiliconDust’s official downloads page. Open it on the same home network and choose a live channel.
The tuner’s video travels over your local network, but internet access may be used for app downloads, updates, account functions, and guide data. Do not assume every app feature will work during an internet outage; behavior varies by app, device, and firmware. A wired tuner connection is a good default, while the viewing device can be on Wi-Fi. Weak Wi-Fi can cause buffering even when antenna reception is good.
Watch on a Windows PC
Install the current HDHomeRun app from the Microsoft Store or the official Windows downloads, then open it, select Live, and choose a channel. The current platform listing covers Windows 10 and 11.

Do not confuse the Setup Utility with the viewer app: the utility is for configuration and scanning, while the app is for watching live TV and accessing recordings where supported. This distinction is especially important with older DUAL hardware. SiliconDust says legacy DUAL units require the Windows Setup Utility for their initial scan, and those units have additional limitations described in its legacy hardware notes.
If Windows cannot find the tuner, check any firewall prompt, temporarily disable a VPN, and make sure the laptop and tuner are on the same home network. A laptop that has moved to another Wi-Fi network will not see a tuner left at home. Playback can also be affected by a PC’s ability to decode a particular video format.
Watch on a Mac
Install HDHomeRun from the Mac App Store or an official SiliconDust download. Connect the Mac to the home network, open the app, select Live, and choose a station. The Mac App Store listing describes free over-the-air TV viewing with a tuner connected to an antenna and home network.
Watch on Xbox
On Xbox, open the Microsoft Store, search for HDHomeRun, install the app, and launch it while the console is connected to the same home network as the tuner. Select a channel from the live-TV interface. SiliconDust documents the app for Xbox One and lists Xbox One and Series consoles on its current downloads page; menu wording can differ between console generations. Xbox is the officially documented console route in the platform information cited here. PlayStation is not listed in SiliconDust’s current supported-platform lists, so do not assume a PlayStation app is available. Depending on the client, DVR scheduling may be easier from a computer or phone.
Watch on Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, or a smart TV

For Roku, the steps are: open Roku Search, find and install HDHomeRun, launch it, and select a channel. The app is free, and the vendor’s Roku instructions note that non-DVR users have 24 hours of guide data. Roku’s live-TV support does not mean it handles every DVR task.
The official app’s platform list and limitations can change. Check the current app page and download page for the exact device before relying on a particular smart-TV client.
Watch on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device
Install the HDHomeRun app through the Apple App Store or the appropriate Android/Fire OS store. Put the phone or tablet on the home network, open the app, select Live, and choose a channel. The official iOS listing describes live viewing and pause/rewind features, although controls vary by device and app version.

On a device without its usual app store, use only SiliconDust’s official sideloading instructions and download source; avoid unofficial APK sites. For mobile viewing, Wi-Fi quality matters: if one phone stutters while a wired computer plays the same channel smoothly, investigate the wireless connection before moving the antenna.
Do you need HDHomeRun DVR?
No—not to watch live TV. The basic live-TV setup is tuner, signal source, network, and compatible viewing app. DVR is an optional addition. HDHomeRun DVR uses a tuner, storage, a playback device, and the relevant guide/recording features. Recordings are stored locally rather than in a cloud DVR.
SiliconDust’s DVR documentation currently describes a free “Record this airing” option and a full guide tier at $35 USD per year. The paid tier adds automatic or series recording, XMLTV API access, and about 14 days of guide data in either direction; the free tier includes about three days of guide data in either direction, an extended live-TV buffer, and tuner sharing. These terms are based on the vendor’s current documentation and may change. Check the page before subscribing.

For a compatible FLEX, the vendor’s setup is to connect a USB hard drive, open http://hdhomerun.local (or the unit’s device-ID address), and choose Format. Formatting erases the drive, so back up anything important first. The DVR documentation also recommends wired Ethernet for the tuner and storage device.

When Plex, Emby, or another app makes sense
The official HDHomeRun app is the simplest starting point for ordinary live viewing: it avoids the need to run a separate media server. Plex, Emby, NextPVR, and MythTV are alternatives for people who already operate a media server, want live TV alongside a personal media library, or need a different client ecosystem. SiliconDust lists options on its third-party software page.
These alternatives add setup and maintenance: server hardware or a host computer, software configuration, client compatibility, and potentially separate accounts or subscriptions. Server-side transcoding can help some clients but adds another potential point of failure. Choose a third-party backend for a specific need, not because it is required to watch a channel with HDHomeRun.
Troubleshoot common HDHomeRun problems
The app cannot find the tuner
- Check that the tuner is powered on and its Ethernet cable runs to your router or network switch.
- Confirm the viewing device is on the same home network—not guest Wi-Fi—and that router client isolation is not blocking device-to-device traffic.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN, then close and reopen the app.
- Restart the tuner and router, then try the local setup page.
- Update the app and tuner firmware through the official downloads and firmware links.
- Test with another supported device. If the local page is unreachable, troubleshoot network connectivity before focusing on video or the antenna.
The scan finds no channels, or a station is missing
Check the coax connection and antenna placement, then run a fresh scan. Temporarily remove unnecessary splitters or an amplifier to isolate a wiring problem. Verify that the tuner supports the signal standard in use and that the intended channel source is connected. Reception varies with location and antenna conditions; no tuner can create stations the antenna does not receive.

An output from a cable-company set-top box is not a compatible HDHomeRun input, according to the vendor FAQ; do not expect the tuner to extract subscription channels from it.
Video stutters or breaks up
First determine whether the problem follows the channel or the device. Try the same channel on a wired computer, another channel on the original device, and another client on the same network. If Ethernet fixes the problem, investigate Wi-Fi coverage or congestion. If the channel breaks up on multiple clients, check antenna reception and coaxial connections. If only one channel format or ATSC 3.0 station fails, suspect decoding or DRM compatibility. With Plex or Emby, also check the server and any transcoding path.
An older DUAL behaves differently
Legacy DUAL models require a Windows Setup Utility for their initial channel scan, cannot use HDHomeRun DVR software, and are not supported on Roku according to SiliconDust’s legacy hardware documentation. Compatibility claims for newer models should not be applied automatically to these older tuners.
